Mohamad Sabu: Egg prices unlikely to spike despite subsidy removal
He said the move aims to offer the public more affordable options while helping to stabilise market prices.
"We also plan to raise the supply of special grade eggs similar to those sold during Ramadan (March) at RM5 per tray.
"This time, we're unsure of the exact price, but we are confident it will not spike uncontrollably," he told reporters after attending Terengganu Pakatan Harapan's Aidilfitri open house here today.
On April 30, KPKM announced the subsidy removal and outlined several intervention measures, to be implemented jointly with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), to cushion the impact on consumers.
Among the measures is the industry's commitment to introducing special grade eggs at reasonable prices.
Mohamad said, aside from special grade eggs, consumers can obtain competitively priced eggs through nationwide initiatives such as Jualan Agro MADANI and Jualan Rahmah.
He stressed that the decision to end both the egg subsidy and price controls—as well as the reduction in subsidy rate from RM0.10 to RM0.05 per egg effective May 1—was made through stakeholder consultation.
"The decision was reached via engagement. We negotiated first with egg producers and industry players. The removal was done in a soft-landing manner, not abruptly. Therefore, I believe egg prices will not surge," he said.
Meanwhile, he encouraged the cultivation of local young coconuts, especially aromatic varieties such as pandan coconuts, to meet rising demand from China.
"This presents an opportunity, particularly for Terengganu with its vast land, to focus on a crop that can generate strong returns. China has a population of over 1.4 billion, with more than 800 million having spending power… this is a real economic opportunity," he said.
On April 19, Agriculture Department director-general Datuk Nor Sam Alwi said the opening of the fresh coconut market to China under the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol marked a strengthening of biosecurity measures and the establishment of a more systematic traceability framework for quality young coconut production.

Pulau Pangkor Emerge As Largest Contributor To Anchovy landings In Perak Last Year
IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pulau Pangkor has emerged as the largest contributor to anchovy landings in Perak with a record of 2,844.44 tonnes worth RM42.67 million in 2024. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia said the achievement underscores the significant role of Pulau Pangkor in the country's fisheries industry, especially the anchovy fishing sector. "Nationally, the anchovy landings in Malaysia in 2024 totalled 14,589.20 tonnes valued at RM164.89 million, referring to the same species, Ikan Bilis/Bunga Air, as categorised in official records. "Among the main producing states are Sabah (5,956.17 tonnes), Perak (2,852.91 tonnes), Kedah (1,818.98 tonnes) and Kelantan (992.65 tonnes)," the statement said. The statement also stated that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, had earlier conducted a working visit to the anchovy industry area on Pulau Pangkor earlier today. According to the DOF statement, Pulau Pangkor currently has 694 vessels registered in various operational zones, namely Zone A (462 vessels), Zone B (44 vessels), Zone C (168 vessels) and Zone C2 (20 vessels) which allows the landing of various fish species, including anchovies. The statement further said that apart from anchovies, statistics also showed that among the top 10 species landed in Manjung Selatan in 2024 were pelaring, tongkol (skipjack tuna), tamban sisek, selayang, kembong (Indian mackerel), cincaru, selar, white shrimp and squid, with a total landing value of RM644.08 million. 'Pulau Pangkor also contributes to Perak's aquaculture sector with a production of 7,056.40 tonnes in 2024 through brackish water pond farming systems, cages, shellfish farming, freshwater ponds, hatcheries and freshwater ornamental fish farming across an area of over 1,264 hectares,' the statement said. Pulau Pangkor also remains an important location in the national fisheries industry with its strategic advantage as a centre for high-quality anchovy production which is a benchmark for the industry.

Timor-Leste nears permanent ASEAN membership ahead of October summit
SEREMBAN: Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now in the documentation phase before its formal admission at the October summit. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the progress during a press briefing today. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' he said. He added that Timor-Leste has met most of ASEAN's membership requirements. 'We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he explained. Mohamad spoke after officiating UMNO Rembau's women, youth, and puteri division meetings. ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to Timor-Leste's inclusion as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. The decision aligns with the outcome of the 46th ASEAN Summit. A Joint Communique from the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9 highlighted support for Timor-Leste's early accession to key economic agreements. 'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' the statement read. Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia's youngest nation, applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. The country gained independence on May 20, 2002, after years of struggle. Despite delays, Dili has shown strong commitment to meeting ASEAN's membership criteria. In February, Malaysia contributed US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta. The funds aim to accelerate the membership process. Malaysia has also provided technical training through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). To date, 319 Timor-Leste officials have received training in various fields under the programme. - Bernama

IHH eyes upside with Turkiye hospital acquisition
PETALING JAYA: Turkiye remains a growth engine for IHH Healthcare Bhd , underpinned by the strong occupancy rate of its hospitals there. BIMB Research in a report said Turkiye's largest hospital operator, Acibadem, which is majority-owned by IHH Healthcare Bhd, is operating at 75% occupancy. Revenue in the first quarter of financial year 2025 (1Q25) per inpatient admission rose 16% year-on-year on a constant currency basis to RM12,355, driven by a more acute case mix. 'Inpatient admissions totalled 44,311 in 1Q25, with foreign patients contributing 13% of revenue.' The research house said earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) for Turkiye came in at RM362mil, with a 300 basis points margin drop due to pre-operating costs from Acibadem Kartal and Vitosha, as well as Ramadan seasonality. Looking ahead, growth will be supported by the Bayındır acquisition. 'The Bayındır acquisition brings urban market exposure and potential procurement and operational synergies, and is supported by a pipeline to add 1,030 beds (circa additional 16%) by 2028, in line with rising demand for quality healthcare.' Acibadem announced earlier this week that it had agreed to buy an 80% stake in Bayındır Hospitals from Is Bankasi for US$55mil (RM232.2mil). BIMB Research said the acquisition offers Acibadem immediate capacity expansion, access to new catchment areas, and synergies in procurement and clinical standards, while also tapping into Turkiye's growing healthcare demand, supported by demographic trends and government initiatives. 'Retaining Turkiye Is Bankasi as a minority shareholder reduces political and operational risks while leveraging its local expertise. 'This transaction also strengthens IHH's diversification outside Malaysia, increasing its resilience against market-specific shocks.' BIMB Research said the financial impact to IHH in the near term is likely modest due to the relatively small scale of Bayındır's operations within the group. 'Integration risks remain, especially in aligning systems, regulatory compliance, and corporate culture. 'The deal comes amid continued Turkyish lira volatility, which may affect earnings translation. Nonetheless, the acquisition price appears reasonable given the asset scale and strategic location, though further disclosures on Bayındır's revenue, Ebitda and occupancy rates would help in refining our forecasts.' The research house is maintaining a 'buy' call on IHH with an unchanged target price of RM8.60. 'At this stage, we maintain our financial year 2025 (FY25) to FY26 forecasts pending completion and integration updates. 'The acquisition supports IHH's long-term growth profile but does not immediately alter earnings trajectory. 'Key monitors include post-merger performance, patient volumes, margin trends, and foreign exchange management. 'Given the group's strong balance sheet and execution track record in cross-border acquisitions, we view the move as a strategic positive but will reassess our target price upon receiving more financial details from management.'
