PETALING JAYA: The Cabinet will discuss the 25% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysian products tomorrow, says plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani. The tariff, effective Aug 1, was announced by US president Donald Trump yesterday and will apply to all Malaysian exports, separate from other sector-specific duties. Malaysia had faced a 24% tariff on certain exports to the US unless both sides could reach an agreement before the end of the 90-day pause today. 'For the past 90 days, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz has been negotiating with the US,' Johari said in a Harian Metro report. 'It seems they have given until Aug 1 to continue negotiations, but they've already increased the tariff from 24% to 25%. 'Let's wait and see. I believe the Cabinet will address this issue tomorrow.' In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Trump said Malaysia's current trade policies had made its trading relationship with the US largely one-sided and non-reciprocal. While Trump said he was ready to lower the 25% tariff if Malaysia changed its trade policies, he warned that any decision by Malaysia to raise tariffs on US goods would result in an additional 25% tariff. Johari also played down concerns that Malaysia's involvement in the BRICS group of developing nations would lead to further US tariffs, stressing the importance of diversifying Malaysia's export markets. Trump previously said the US would impose an additional 10% tariff on any country aligning itself with BRICS's 'Anti-American policies'. Anwar was among the world leaders who attended the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit in Brazil on Sunday. 'There are over 190 countries in the world. If one country treats us like this, it doesn't mean we can't survive,' said Johari. 'We must look for new markets.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tackling current business issues

INDUSTRY experts gave tips at the recent Star Outstanding Business Awards 2025 LAB participants on how to navigate the challenging times wrought with geopolitical uncertainties. Then in the second session, the panel of experts explored different methods that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) seek financing outside of the conventional practice of approaching normal financial institutions. The afternoon event, which was held at Menara Star to a packed audience, was attended by Star Media Group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt and chief operating officer Lydia Wang. Similar to previous labs, there were two sessions that covered two distinct topics. The first topic explored the challenges that companies face in light of 'The Tariffs and Taxes Aftermath: What is Next for Malaysian Businesses?' Moderated by the Malaysia Entrepreneurs and Development Association president Datuk Teh Tai Yong, the topic was discussed by panel speakers past SOBA winner Mega Fortris Berhad group managing director and group chief executive officer Datuk Adrian Ng, PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd chief operations officer Dr Jason Cheah and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) strategic planning division director Noor Hayati Abu Noh. The speakers discussed the different scenarios that businesses have to confront, from the 25% tariffs imposed by the United States to the expanded Sales and Service Tax from the government as well as instances of supply chain disruptions due to the civil unrest in the Middle East. Ng advised businesses to understand themselves and to draw back until the time is right to scale back up. Noor Hayati both touched on the importance of diversification, either in business or which country to trade with. Cheah urged SMEs that it is time to start looking into environment, social and governance matters as it has a profound impact. The second session, which was moderated by Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia treasurer Datuk Koong Lin Loong, gave SMEs enlightening information on 'Raising Funds and Accessing Capital for Business Growth'. Speakers in this session included RHB Bank Berhad SME banking, SME engagement head Sim Ee Chiew, Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia chief business officer Sean Tan, PEOPLElogy Berhad founder Allen Lee and Hernan Corporation founder and group CEO Datuk Anna Teo. The panel gave a lively session as Teo declared she rarely approached banks for financing. She asked businesses to be more flexible and explore other possibilities. While banks would be the first step for budding businesses, she said entrepreneurs should network and ask about other alternatives, such as private equities. Tan explained that CGC's job is to transfer the credit risks from a bank to CGC. In the event a business fails, and the SME is unable to pay, CGC will provide the necessary relief. Ng shared his experience of raising funds via the initial public offering route, which he said was 'more challenging because (Bursa Malaysia) wants the public to trust you (hence the need for) transparency.' Sim said that banks do much more than just provide loans, they help enhance cash flow and operation efficiency in order to eliminate idle cash, as well as digitalisation services. Besides the panel discussions, SOBA sponsors introduced their business models and some of their services to the participants. CGC's SME advisory and strategic alliances head Mike Wong talked about some of the services that are available to SMEs that are seeking ways to finance their companies. PKT Logistic's presentation was on the company's diversified range of services, from logistics and education to its own inland port, presented by Cheah. RHB Bank SME business development head Kelvin Chin and U Mobile Sdn Bhd commercial pre-sales section head Lim Swee Mei showcased the services that would benefit SMEs in their businesses. SOBA 2025 is organised by SMG with CGC, PKT Logistics, RHB Bank and U Mobile as main sponsors, Great Wall Motor Malaysia as co-sponsor, and Matrade as the official trade promotion partner. It is audited by BDO while radio stations 988 and Suria are official media partners. For details, call the SOBA hotline at 017-231 1789 or visit Look out for the announcement of the next SOBA LAB 2025, which will be held on Aug 14 at Iconic Hotel, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Syrian committee reports 1,426 killed in March violence, says commanders did not order it

BEIRUT (Reuters) -A Syrian fact-finding committee said on Tuesday that 1,426 people had died in March in attacks on security forces and subsequent mass killings of Alawites, but concluded that commanders had not given orders for the revenge attacks. The incidents in the coastal region were the worst violence to hit Syria since the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad last year. The fact-finding committee's work is seen as an important test of the new leadership, made up mainly of former anti-Assad rebel fighters, who are facing new unrest this month involving other minority groups in the southwest. The committee concluded that Syrian commanders did not give orders to commit violations and in fact gave orders to halt them. It came up with a list of 298 suspects involved in violations against Alawites and 265 involved in the initial attack on security forces, committee head Jumaa Al-Anzi said. The names are not being released publicly for now and have been referred to courts for further investigations, spokesperson Yasser Farhan said. He added that 31 people who committed violations against civilians had been arrested, as well as six people he referred to as "remnants" of the former regime. A Reuters investigation last month identified 1,479 Syrian Alawites killed and dozens who were missing from 40 distinct sites of revenge killings, and found a chain of command leading from the attackers directly to men who serve alongside Syria's new leaders in Damascus. Syria's new leadership, which has roots in the insurgency led by Sunni Muslim Islamist groups against Assad, a member of the Alawite minority sect, has long sought to reassure minorities that they will be safe. Safety of minorities has become a major issue again this month with hundreds of people killed in clashes between government security forces, Sunni Bedouin fighters and militants from the Druze sect in the southern province of Sweida. The authorities have set up a new fact-finding committee in response. 'WIDESPREAD BUT NOT ORGANISED' The violence in March began on March 6 with attacks on Syrian security forces stationed in the region. It put hospitals and other state institutions out of operation and caused wide areas to fall out of government control, Farhan said. The committee found that 238 members of the security forces were killed in these attacks, perpetrated by forces aligned with the former Assad government, Farhan said. In response, around 200,000 armed men mobilized from across Syria, pouring into the coastal region, he said. This led to violations including killings, theft and sectarian incitement that the committee found were "widespread but not organised," Farhan said. Farhan said the committee members had full cooperation from government forces as they undertook their months of work, and it was now up to President Ahmed al-Sharaa whether to release their report in full. Diana Semaan, Syria researcher at Amnesty International, called for the full findings to be released and for perpetrators to face prosecution. "In terms of the fact-finding committee, acknowledging that atrocities against Alawite civilians happened is an important step towards justice," she told Reuters. "[But] without the proper prosecution of perpetrators, then we have impunity. It won't be the justice and accountability that the victims deserve." Trump Media invests $2 billion in Bitcoin

The company plans to use the assets to generate revenues, according to a statement US President Donald Trump's media and technology company has acquired about $2 billion in Bitcoin and related assets, underscoring his administration's accelerating pivot toward cryptocurrencies. The Trump family has increasingly aligned with the crypto industry through new ventures, investments, and public endorsements in recent months. On Monday, Trump Media - the firm behind the Truth Social platform - announced the acquisition, saying another $300 million in capital has been allocated to an options-based Bitcoin strategy, and signaling that it may convert the options into cryptocurrency depending on market conditions. The assets will be used "to generate revenues and potentially to acquire additional crypto assets," CEO and President Devin Nunes said. Crypto now accounts for about two-thirds of the firm's $3 billion in liquid holdings. The purchase is part of Trump Media's 'Bitcoin treasury plan', which involves buying and holding digital assets - similar to how companies stockpile bonds - to increase liquidity and financial flexibility. Trump Media shares soared nearly 10% following the announcement. Trump, who placed his shares in a revocable trust managed by Donald Trump Jr., maintains a major stake valued at around $2.3 billion. Once a crypto skeptic, Trump reversed course during the 2024 campaign, pledging to make the US the "crypto capital of the world" and to serve as its "crypto president." Since returning to the White House, he has backed several family-led ventures in the space, including World Liberty Financial - a decentralized finance project that has brought in $500 million since launching in September. As part of the new US 'strategic reserve' of crypto assets unveiled in March, Trump signed the GENIUS Act last week - the country's first major law regulating digital currency. Critics have claimed that the overlap between Trump's crypto ventures and his political authority could result in widespread corruption. Trump Media's announcement came less than a week after Bitcoin hit a record high, topping $120,000 - reinforcing its position as the world's most valuable and widely held cryptocurrency. Analysts attributed the rally to surging institutional demand and a shift in US policy under Trump. On Tuesday, it was trading at $118,395 per coin. (
