EastEnders exploring ‘uncharted territory' as future under new boss is revealed
EastEnders boss Ben Wadey will take the BBC soap into 'uncharted territory' following his appointment as Executive Producer.
Ben previously worked as a Storyliner and Story Editor on the serial, focussing on the show's 35th anniversary and introducing the Panesar clan.
He was also Story Producer on the final series of Holby City, before becoming the commissioning executive at Channel 4.
In February, he took charge of EastEnders from the much-celebrated Chris Clenshaw, who departed following the 40th anniversary episodes.
It usually takes a while to see a new producer's ideas come into fruition, but Ben's forthcoming stint has already received significant recognition from Kate Oates, the Beeb's Head of Continuing Drama.
This comes following a huge scoop for the show, which took home the gong for Best Soap and Continuing Drama at last night's BAFTA TV Awards.
On the red carpet, Kate teased what was ahead.
'We can tease that all those heartland characters have some really, really big stuff coming up, actually,' she said.
'We've got some uncharted territory, which considering we're following on the heels of Mr Clenshaw is quite an accolade, because he has broken quite a lot of fresh ground.'
Continuing to RadioTimes, Kate added: 'I think the challenge for Ben – who is our new exec – has been to carry on after Chris's success, but he is very much ready to do that and we're excited as a team.
'We're going to miss Chris terribly, but we're also really excited for what's to come.'

She also teased that another familiar face could be coming home to Albert Square.
They will follow in the footsteps of Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer), David Wicks (Michael French), Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) and Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman), who have all returned – alongside many other names – over the last year. More Trending

A whole host of soap stars let their hair down at the British Soap Awards in London last night before a reported bomb scare ground the show's afterparty to a halt Stars of the nation's favourite soaps were papped looking bleary-eyed as they left the British Soap Awards in London last night. The glitzy event, which was held at Hackney Town Hall, celebrated the creative cast from a whole host of shows, including EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. After the ceremony in which EastEnders waltzed away with an impressive eight gongs, beating Emmerdale, Corrie and Hollyoaks to take home Best British Soap, a slew of excitable stars let their hair down at the afterparty. Jaime Winstone, Patsy Palmer and Tina O'Brien were among those snapped at the bash, which went on until the early hours. Award-winning actor Ray Winstone's daughter, Jaime, was seen puffing on a cigarette, sporting a thigh-high white a gold dress as she left the venue with Bianca Jackson star, Patsy Palmer. Patsy looked stunning in a blue silk blazer and matching trousers, which set off her red hair a treat as she grinned after watching EastEnders clean up at the awards. Also representing EastEnders was Jack Branning star, Scott Maslen. He was also seen puffing on a cigarette, wearing a tux and holding a bottle of beer, as he celebrated the success of Albert Square. The actor was joined at the knees-up by fellow Walford wonders, Anita Dobson, who played the iconic Angie Watts, and Ian Beale star Adam Woodyatt. Meanwhile, representing Coronation Street, actress Tina O'Brien was seen making an exit from the after party in the early hours. She looked stunning in a floor-length nude coloured dress with gold sequins, clutching a baby pink bag as she made her way to her hotel in the capital. Also at the bash on behalf of Corrie, was actor Jack P Shepherd and Mollie Gallagher, who looked quite content chomping on a burger in the street, wearing a gorgeous powder blue dress with tuille detail and a cute black hair bow. Despite letting their hair down at the glamourous bash, the night allegedly ended abruptly for the soap stars after they were suddenly asked to leave the venue shortly before 1am after the event had reportedly received a bomb threat. Speaking to the Mirror, our source said: "We all got evacuated just before 1am. No reason was given at first and security came round and told us we had to leave immediately. "As we all waited in the street outside, security told us there had been a bomb threat. We weren't allowed back in the building so people started making their way home." In a video shared with us, some of TV's biggest soap stars can be seen waiting outside the venue as more evacuate - with the likes of ' and former star Emmett J Scanlan among them. A show source also told The Mirror: "Owing to a security alert after the recording of the awards, it was necessary to evacuate the after party venue. Everyone was cleared from the building safely." The Metropolitan Police also told us: "At 00:49hrs on Sunday, 1 June, police were called to Hackney Town Centre after a threat was made to the premises. The call was determined to be a hoax and nothing suspicious was located." The Mirror has contacted ITV. Despite the reported drama after the ceremony, the awards were a real celebration of the best the soap world has to offer. EastEnders was honoured with a total of eight awards- including Best Dramatic Performance for Steve McFadden and Best Single Episode for Phil Mitchell's psychosis. Meanwhile, Hollyoaks won three gongs, Emmerdale took home two and Coronation Street left with one - the Outstanding Achievement Award to David Neilson, who has played Roy Cropper for 30 years.

Chef Jamie Oliver says dyslexia documentary was ‘most painful' thing he has done
Chef Jamie Oliver says a new documentary about dyslexia was the 'most viscerally painful' thing he has ever done. The 50-year old celebrity chef has lived with the learning difficulty all his life and will now present a one-hour documentary on Channel 4 titled Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution. The show will dive into the challenges and issues children with dyslexia face in Britain while asking whether the Government can do more to fix the education system. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Oliver said: 'I'm unpacking quite a lot of stuff. 'I thought I'd buried it but it's hitting a nerve. 'Genuinely, of all the things I've ever done, this documentary is the most viscerally painful,' 'I've seen so many high-flying, talented, grown men cry about this — I've just done it to you — the concept of being worthless (when you're) young is real. It's really triggering.' According to the NHS dyslexia is described as a 'common learning difficulty that causes problems with reading, writing and spelling'. Having left school with two GCSEs, the chef opened up about the challenges he faced, adding that the kitchen 'saved' him. He said: 'I didn't have any extra time in exams, there were no strategies, just a bit of extra tutoring help. 'There was no robust dyslexic knowledge then.' He also described feeling 'stupid, worthless and thick' and developing 'a hatred of words and a total resentment for education' while other students called him a 'stupid dunce', leaving him with a 'deep-seated feeling of constantly being behind'. 'I didn't tell mum, dad or the teachers. I just bottled it up inside. 'The kitchen saved me. I knew I had something to offer. I knew I wasn't a useless piece of shit.' The Essex-born chef and author is known for hosting cooking shows and documentaries including The Naked Chef and Jamie's Kitchen along with publishing a series of cookbooks including Jamie's 30-Minute Meals. He has also been an avid campaigner over the years including calling on the Government for greater provisions for healthier school meals and playing a role in imposing a sugar tax on soft drinks. He is now campaigning for greater support in schools, calling for early screenings for dyslexia and neurodiversity. Oliver added: 'We also need more training for teachers. In a two to three-year training course only about half a day is given to neurodiversity. 'I've only got love for teachers, we need to appreciate them more. 'But they want to be trained, they want to have the tools to notice, understand and react.' Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution can be watched on Channel 4 on June 9 at 9pm.
