Basavaraj Bommai accuses CM Siddaramaiah of making false statements on funds
BENGALURU: Karnatakawill receive over Rs 1 lakh crore more under the 15th Finance Commission compared to the 14th Finance Commission, BJP Member of Parliament from Haveri, Basavaraj Bommai has said.
Bommai said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is making political statements against the Union Government as he is unable to allocate funds for the guarantee schemes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi increased the Central grant share from 32% to 42%, Bommai said, and added that though Siddaramaiah is aware of it, he deliberately conceals.
Accusing Siddaramaiah of repeatedly making false statements, Bommai, a former chief minister, said that during the discussions on the 14th Finance Commission, five Congress ministers were present, but they failed to advocate effectively for the state, and are now trying to cover up their mistakes with such statements.
The former chief minister said that the state has already received as much as it got during the 14th Finance Commission period, and funds will continue to come.
During the UPA regime, Karnataka got only Rs 700 crore for Railway projects, he said. 'This year, the Centre has allocated Rs 7,700 crore. However, the state government is unable to provide the matching grants,' Bommai said.
Caste survey
On the proposed caste survey, Bommai said that the authority to conduct a caste survey lies with the Union Government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is trying to mislead the backward classes. Bommai said that Siddaramaiah was in a tight spot over the issue, and the high command had to step in to rescue him.
On the ongoing wars in West Asia, the BJP MP termed Israel's attack on Iran shocking. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is already affecting the world significantly, the MP said, adding that all global leaders must work towards halting wars.
On Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had stated that Karnataka annually contributes Rs 4.5 lakh crore in taxes to the Centre but gets only 15 paise against 1 Rupee in the devolution of taxes and this injustice should not happen in the 16th Finance Commission recommendation.

Who's at the 2025 G7 summit? What's on the agenda? Middle East conflict, economy, and more
At the 51st G7 summit to be held on Sunday in the remote town of Kananaskis, Alberta in Canada, leaders of the Group of Seven countries – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the US – will meet for intense discussions on global issues. The three-day summit will end on June 17. At G7 2025 meet, intense debate is likely on the unfolding crisis in the West Asia after Israel launched massive strikes on Iran's military and nuclear sites on Friday, Israel's offensive against Gaza, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and trade war fuelled by US President Donald Trump's tariffs. The Group of Seven countries represents 44% of global economy but only 10% of the world's population. This year, Canada is hosting G7 summit. Besides G7 leaders, the summit will also see leaders from the European Union (EU) and heads of state from non-G7 members. Leaders from the non-G7 countries, invited by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, include Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Leaders of Ukraine, Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa and South Korea are also expected to attend the G7 summit. The G7 summit website lists three core issues on the agenda for this year's discussions. 'Protecting our communities around the world'; 'Building energy security and accelerating the digital transition'; and 'Securing the partnerships of the future'. After a meeting of G7 finance ministers held in Canada in May, the group issued a joint statement saying they would continue to monitor 'nonmarket policies and practices' which create imbalances in world trade. The statement was seen as a swipe at China's trade practices. Peter Boehm, Canada's sherpa of the G7 2018 summit, expects the heads of state to pivot discussion to devote more time to the war, reported news agency AP. 'Leaders can accommodate a discussion, perhaps even a statement,' Boehm said. 'The foreign policy agenda has become much larger with this.'

Tripura BJP holds candlelight rally against vandalism at Tagore's ancestral home in B'desh
The ruling BJP in Tripura on Sunday held a candlelight rally to protest the recent attack and vandalism of the ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh. Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee, who led the candlelight rally, said that people across the world respect and love Tagore for his monumental literary creations in all fields. Strongly condemning the vandalisation of Tagore's home in Bangladesh, Bhattacharjee, who is also a member of Rajya Sabha, termed the act as a blow to literature, culture and humanism. 'Tagore is the architect of the national anthem of both India and Bangladesh," the BJP leader said and demanded exemplary punishment for those who are involved in the shocking incident. The ruling BJP on Saturday held protests at more than six places in seven districts along Tripura's border with Bangladesh. Senior leaders, including ministers, led the protest rallies in Agartala, Bishalgarh, Udaipur, Belonia, Kailashahar, Dharmanagar and Khowai. BJP sources said that similar protests would also be held on June 16 in all Assembly constituencies in Tripura. State BJP General Secretary and MLA Bhagaban Das, who led a protest rally in Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post, said, 'A barbaric incident of attack and vandalisation at the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh has shocked people in India.' Das, a former minister, said that such an attack on the shared cultural heritage is totally unacceptable. 'There must be a limit to such atrocious actions. The properties and heritage relating to a towering cultural icon like Tagore have not been spared in Bangladesh. Such acts are an unforgivable crime,' he told the media. Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also condemned the attack and vandalisation of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh and termed it as an "attack on our culture and heritage". He said that the act was a strongly condemnable and shameful incident for the entire nation. 'The interim government of Bangladesh needs to act strongly,' the Chief Minister said. On June 8, a mob attacked and vandalised the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh, also known as Rabindra Kachharibari or Rabindra Memorial Museum in Sirajganj district. Media reports said that the attackers also assaulted a director of the institution. Situated in Shahzadpur in Rajshahi division, Rabindra Kachharibari is the ancestral home and revenue office of the Tagore family. Many of Tagore's literary works came up while living in this mansion. India's Ministry of External Affairs also on June 12 strongly condemned the vandalism of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, describing it as part of a 'systematic' pattern by extremists to undermine the country's syncretic cultural heritage. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal termed the June 8 attack on the Rabindra Kachharibari as a 'despicable' act and 'a disgrace to the memory and the inclusive philosophy' of the Nobel Laureate.
