KUCHING (June 14): The Padawan chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Padawan is all set for the implementation of three community-impact projects this year.
Leading the activities will be the Embrace Programme 3.0, scheduled for this July 4-6 at the Tropics City Enrichment Hub here, run in collaboration with BEE Gastronomy Group and Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) Kuching.
'The programme will feature a free rabies vaccination drive, carried out in partnership with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS); campaigns on animal awareness and responsible pet ownership; a pet fashion show; a vendors' market; interactive workshops; and also mural painting,' said JCI Padawan in a statement, issued in connection with a recent courtesy call on Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap at the state constituency's service centre at GalaCity here.
The JCI Padawan delegation, led by its president Alaric Sim, extended an official invitation to Yap to attend the Embrace 3.0's opening ceremony on July 5.
In addition, there would be two other meaningful projects up for implementation.
'The programmes will involve the Trinity Elderly Care Centre, and the mental institution at Kota Sentosa.
'These initiatives are currently in development, with the dates to be confirmed soon.
'Our current focus remains on the successful execution of Embrace 3.0,' said JCI Padawan, also extending its appreciation to Yap for his continued encouragement and dedication to youths and community development in Kota Sentosa.

‘Heartbreaking': Bear in India refuses to abandon dying cub struck by speeding car

In video footage posted online, a bear can be seen dragging her cub, which had been struck by a speeding car, by the side of the road and tending to it for about an hour. -- PHOTOS: INDIANWILDANIMALS/INSTAGRAM NEW DELHI (The Straits Times/ANN): A mother's love knows no bounds, and it is no different for bear mums. In video footage posted on social media site Instagram and widely circulated by thousands of heartbroken animal lovers, an Asiatic black bear is seen dragging her cub to the side of the road in India's Madhya Pradesh state. The cub was struck by a speeding car, as its mother – with her cubs in tow – was crossing the road. For about an hour, the bear can be seen trying to will her cub to live, even as the cub is in its death throes. Another cub is clinging onto the mother's back as she paces the road. Mother bear first sits beside her dying cub, then stands over her – growling, groaning, and even appearing to cry and beg for help. Reports said there was a third cub with her, but it was out of view of the camera. Forest rangers eventually arrived, and guided the bear and her surviving cubs back to the forest. They tried to revive the injured cub, but its injuries proved fatal. The incident happened on Aug 6, and a video of it – viewed over 330,000 times – was posted by Indian Wild Animals on its Instagram page on Aug 9. The Times of India reported that the driver responsible for knocking down the cub had yet to be identified. Viewers overwhelmingly described the scene as 'heartbreaking'. 'Heartbreaking. Humans are beyond saving,' said one comment. Another said: 'Humans are the only curse that exists on this planet.' 'We've really failed them. We're supposed to protect them,' another comment said. Several people criticised the Indian government for failing to take into account wildlife habitation when building roads and railways. In a similar incident in May, an elephant was seen in a video trying to push a lorry that had hit her five-year-old calf on the road in the Malaysian state of Perak. The calf was said to have darted suddenly onto the road, and was hit by and pinned beneath the lorry. It later died. Its mother refused to leave, and at one point, became agitated and violent, and rammed the lorry with her head. She had to be tranquilised and moved to a safer place. - The Straits Times/ANN

Deaf Palestinian uses social media to highlight Gaza's struggles through sign language

GAZA: Basem Alhabel stood amongst the ruins of Gaza, with people flat on the floor all around him as bullets flew, and filmed himself using sign language to explain the dangers of the war to fellow deaf Palestinians and his followers on social media. Alhabel, 30, who describes himself as a 'deaf journalist in Gaza' on his Instagram account, says he wants to raise more awareness of the conflict -- from devastating Israeli air strikes to the starvation now affecting most of the population -- by informing Palestinians and people abroad with special needs. Bombarded by Israel for nearly two years, many Gazans complain the world does not hear their voices despite mass suffering with a death toll that exceeds 60,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities in the demolished enclave. 'I wished to get my voice out to the world and the voices of the deaf people who cannot speak or hear, to get their voice out there, so that someone can help us,' he said through his friend and interpreter Mohammed Moshtaha, who he met during the war. 'I tried to help, to film and do a video from here and there, and publish them so that we can make our voices heard in the world.' Alhabel has an Instagram following of 141,000. His page, which shows him in a flak jacket and helmet, features images of starving, emaciated children and other suffering. He films a video then returns to a tent to edit -- one of the many where Palestinians have sought shelter and safety during the war, which erupted when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel in October 2023, drawing massive retaliation. Alhabel produced images of people collecting flour from the ground while he used sign language to explain the plight of Gazans, reinforcing the view of a global hunger monitor that has warned a famine scenario is unfolding. 'As you can see, people are collecting flour mixed with sand,' he communicated. Alhabel and his family were displaced when the war started. They stayed in a school with tents. 'There was no space for a person to even rest a little. I stayed in that school for a year and a half,' he explained. Alhabel is likely to be busy for some time. There are no signs of a ceasefire on the horizon despite mediation efforts. Israel's political security cabinet approved a plan early on Friday to take control of Gaza City, as the country expands its military operations despite intensifying criticism at home and abroad over the war. 'We want this situation to be resolved so that we can all be happy, so I can feed my children, and life can be beautiful,' said Alhabel - REUTERS

A sea of Jalur Gemilang: Johor man's show of patriotism

JOHOR BARU: As the nation celebrates the spirit of independence, one elderly man in Johor has taken his patriotism to extraordinary heights. M. Kandapan, 65, has adorned his home and vehicle with over 3,000 pieces of the Jalur Gemilang, each one carefully placed as a testament to his unwavering love for the country. This initiative is not new for Kandapan. For the past 25 years, he has made it a personal mission to decorate his home every National Month as a way to express gratitude for living in a peaceful, harmonious, and independent nation. "This year, I replaced all the flags - about 3,000 of them, which I purchased online, and started decorating my home and car in July. My family helped me with the task," he said when met at his home in Bandar Seri Alam, Masai. For this father of three, it's more than just decoration, it's a lifelong commitment. "I will continue to fly the Jalur Gemilang until the end of my life. This is my way of showing love for my country," he shared. Despite the effort and cost involved, Kandapan takes immense joy in seeing the flags proudly fluttering outside his home and attached to his vehicle. "Every time I see the Jalur Gemilang waving, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and pride. It's an indescribable feeling," he added. Kandapan believes everyone expresses their love for the country in their own way. "This is mine. It may seem small to some, but it means a lot to me. While decorating my home and car with flags may cost me, it's nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's independence,' he shared. To Kandapan, Malaysia's true strength lies in its diversity. "Our unity across races, religions, and cultures is what makes Malaysia special," he said. He also encourages everyone to support the 1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign and to show respect for the flag. "The Jalur Gemilang represents our pride. Don't fly it torn or upside down-it disrespects the independence we hold dear," he said, adding that his decorations are a lasting symbol of his love for Malaysia, a love he hopes to pass on to future generations. "I want my children and grandchildren to remember the peace we have and truly understand the meaning of independence," he said, hoping the next generation will carry forward the spirit of patriotism. - Bernama View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bernama (@bernamaofficial)
