Malaysia's King warns Defence Ministry against buying ‘flying coffins'
Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar is advising against buying Black Hawk helicopters that are over 30 years old.
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia's King, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, has issued a stern reminder to the Defence Ministry not to repeat past mistakes in the procurement of military assets, particularly used aircraft that could endanger the lives of pilots and military personnel.
Sultan Ibrahim said Malaysia's experience in purchasing second-hand Skyhawk aircraft should serve as a lesson, as the planes could not be fully used.
'Do not repeat the past mistake like when we bought second-hand Skyhawks… Are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'? Think for yourselves,' he said.
'I believe all this happens because the Defence Ministry is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, and even textile traders trying to sell drones,' said Sultan Ibrahim at the 60th anniversary parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas (RGK) at Kem Iskandar, on Aug 16.
Also present were the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar Sultan Ibrahim.
Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Mohd Nizam Jaffar and Army chief General Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan were also in attendance.
The A-4 Skyhawk, developed by McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing), was closely associated with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, which acquired 80 units from the United States in 1982 at US$1 million (S$1.28 million) each, before retiring the fleet due to a high accident rate.

Sultan Ibrahim, who is also colonel commandant of Gerup Gerak Khas (GGK), further advised the defence minister to cancel the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters that are over 30 years old, out of concern that the same mistake would be repeated.
Stop 'buying nonsense'
He said all parties involved in military procurement must ensure evaluations are conducted transparently, based on market prices and the actual needs of the armed forces, and not merely on the recommendations of agents or vested interests.
'Do not waste time buying nonsense that does not fit the needs of the military. If you don't know the price, ask me first,' he said.
'Five years ago, I pointed out the purchase of rigid raiding craft for the commandos at RM5 million (S$1.5 million), when I could have sourced a better boat for under RM2 million,' he said.
'Recently, I heard there was a proposal to buy a similar boat but in a larger size, at nearly RM10 million. This makes no sense and must be carefully reviewed,' Sultan Ibrahim said.
He stressed that if all asset purchases are made at inflated 'middleman' prices, then government allocations will never be sufficient.
'Therefore, do not try to fool me. If you do not want to heed my advice, I will not speak up again,' he said.
In addition to highlighting the need for price transparency, Sultan Ibrahim also criticised the delay in the combat diving pool project at RGK Camp, which was supposed to be completed in 2022 but is still not operational.
At the same time, he urged the government to prioritise the acquisition of new equipment to ensure RGK's readiness remains at the highest level, enabling swift response to any threat. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Israeli military prepares to relocate residents to southern Gaza, spokesperson says

REUTERS/Mahmoud Issa/File Photo The Israeli military will provide Gaza residents with tents and other equipment starting from Sunday ahead of relocating them from combat zones to "safe" ones in the south of the enclave, military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said on Saturday. This comes days after Israel said it intended to launch a new offensive to seize control of northern Gaza City, the enclave's largest urban centre, in a plan that raised international alarm over the fate of the demolished strip, home to about 2.2 million people. The equipment will be transferred via the Israeli crossing of Kerem Shalom by the United Nations and other international relief organisations after being thoroughly inspected by defence ministry personnel, Adraee added in a post on X. Israel's COGAT, the military agency that coordinates aid, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the preparations were part of the new plan. Taking over the city of about one million Palestinians complicates ceasefire efforts to end the nearly two-year war, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu follows through with his plan to take on Hamas' two remaining strongholds. Netanyahu said Israel had no choice but to complete the job and defeat Hamas as the Palestinian militant group has refused to lay down its arms. Hamas said it would not disarm unless an independent Palestinian state was established. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The war began when Hamas attacked southern Israel in October 2023, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israeli authorities say 20 of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza are alive. Israel's subsequent military assault has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, Gaza's health ministry says. It has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations. REUTERS

Australia shrugged off a start-line penalty in the second race of the day, as Tom Slingsby's crew clawed back to finish third before out-duelling Spain to win race three and coming second to New Zealand in the day's fourth and last race. Australia's tally of 32 points put them ahead of Peter Burling's New Zealand, who won race four. The Kiwis ended the day on 24 points, protecting their overall lead in the championship standings. Quentin Delapierre's France finished third, level with New Zealand on 24 points, after being cleared to compete following overnight repairs to a damaged starboard rudder. Rockwool Racing Denmark broke SailGP's racing and overall F50 speed record during the third race, as they nailed the start and accelerated to a massive 103.93 km/h. Germany (Deutsche Bank) won the opening race to the delight of the Sassnitz crowd, a bright start for the team who began the weekend 11th overall on zero points. Britain's Emirates GBR won race two and finished sixth on 19 points. Their hopes of a strong opening day were dashed after a collision with United States in the fourth race which left their F50 with a hole and tore away the U.S. boat's port bow. Top stories Swipe. US ready to be part of security guarantees for Ukraine, Germany's Merz says
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz visits the town of Irpin, as Russia's attack on Ukraine continues, outside Kyiv, Ukraine May 3, 2022. REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko BERLIN - The U.S. is ready to be part of security guarantees for Ukraine, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday, a day after a summit in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. "And the good news is that America is ready to participate in such security guarantees and is not leaving it to the Europeans alone," Merz told German public broadcaster ZDF after being briefed together with other European leaders by Trump on his talks with Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is due to meet Trump on Monday in Washington, after which a three-way meeting between Putin, Trump and Zelenskiy should be held as soon as possible with the aim of reaching a peace agreement, Merz said. "If that works out, it's worth more than a ceasefire," he said. Merz said Trump had indicated that Russia seemed ready to negotiate based on the front lines of the conflict, rather than the borders of Ukrainian regions it claims. "This is a huge difference because Russia is claiming territories that it hasn't occupied yet," he said. Speaking separately to German broadcaster n-tv, Merz said he did not think Zelenskiy would face as difficult a time in Washington with Trump as he had in February, when the two leaders clashed in an extraordinary exchange before the world's media at the White House. "We'll give a few good pieces of advice," he said. Merz told ZDF that while it was important that Europe stand united, the U.S. would for the time being continue to play the decisive role in the war, which has raged since 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. "The American president has the power both militarily and via appropriate sanctions and tariffs to ensure that Russia moves more than it currently does," he said. REUTERS
