Opposition leader in legislative council Ambadas Danve slams state govt over ‘plan' to issue new liquor shop licenses in Maharashtra

Time of India15-07-2025
Mumbai: Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra legislative council Ambadas Danve on Tuesday claimed that the state government was planning to issue 328 new liquor shop licences which would only benefit those who are close to the ruling alliance.
"The government is pushing this decision in the name of increasing revenue. But the way the planning has been done, it appears that licences will be distributed to people close to MLAs of Mahayuti alliance," Danve told reporters at the legislature complex, where the monsoon session is underway.
It would also lead to a rise in liquor consumption and prove harmful to society, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said. "With more liquor shops, consumption will go up and it will destroy many families.
This will damage the state's reputation," he said.
Danve also recalled that when the government tried to take a similar decision in 1972, socialist leader Mrinal Gore had opposed it.

Last week, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad had claimed that the BJP-led Mahayuti government was planning to issue new liquor shop licences to cope with the financial burden of schemes like Ladki Bahin Yojana, under which eligible women receive monthly aid of Rs 1,500.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar stated that the government had made a rule that no new licences for liquor shops will be given without taking the legislature into confidence.
Danve, meanwhile, also accused a Shiv Sena leader from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar of owning 12 liquor shops. "On the one hand, the government launches the Ladki Bahin scheme, and on the other hand, it is expanding liquor outlets. We will oppose this both in the House and on the streets," he said.
Talking about the resumption of operations at the Akashwani MLA hostel canteen here, Danve questioned the administration's logic. "The caterer's licence had lapsed years ago, yet the same company continued to operate the canteen. Now it has resumed operating. What was the point of suspending it for a few days then?" he asked.
After Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad slapped a canteen employee for serving 'stale food' last week, the Food and Drug Administration suspended the canteen's licence.
On deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, who is also Shiv Sena president, reportedly reprimanding his party's MLAs and ministers for their behaviour bringing bad publicity to the party, Danve said, "These people are thick-skinned. You will see no change in their behaviour."
He also questioned Shinde's role as then urban development minister when Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd won the contract for the Thane-Ghodbunder-Bhayander road and tunnel project. The contract was scrapped in May after the L&T, which had been disqualified, moved the Supreme Court.

SC dismisses KAL Airways, Kalanithi Maran pleas against Delhi High Court order in SpiceJet case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed appeals by KAL Airways and media baron Kalanithi Maran, challenging the Delhi High Court order which rejected their plea seeking Rs 1,323 crore in damages from SpiceJet and its chief Ajay Singh. A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and A S Chandurkar dismissed the appeals challenging a May 23 high court order, which dismissed their pleas on grounds of delay. The dispute among the parties arose after Singh, who owned SpiceJet earlier, bought it back from Maran after it was grounded for months due to a resource crunch. Differences arose subsequently with Maran and his firm accusing SpiceJet and Singh of breaching the agreement for issue of share warrants and preference shares to them. The matter went to arbitration, which rejected KAL Airways' claim for Rs 1,323 crore but ordered a refund of Rs 579.08 crore, with interest. The two sides challenged this before the high court, where a single judge on July 31, 2023, directed SpiceJet and Singh to refund Rs 270 crore plus interest to KAL Airways and Maran. On appeal, the division bench set aside this order and remanded it back to the single judge for reconsidering the petition under Section 34 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. Though KAL Airways and Maran moved the Supreme Court against this, the top court had dismissed it on July 26, 2024. They once again challenged the single judge order before a division bench, which by order dated May 23, 2025, dismissed it on grounds of delay. This led to the present appeals before the Supreme Court, which were dismissed on Wednesday.

ED files Fema case against Myntra for Rs 1,654 crore FDI violation

Myntra is accused of misusing the wholesale 'cash & carry' route to conduct multi-brand retail trading (MBRT), which is restricted under the FDI policy. The ED found that Myntra received foreign direct investment (FDI) claiming it was for wholesale trading, but routed the majority of sales through Vector E-Commerce Pvt Ltd, a related-party entity that sold directly to consumers. This structure was allegedly used to bypass norms by bifurcating B2B and B2C operations, while actually engaging in retail trade. As per the FDI policy amendments dated April 1, 2010, and October 1, 2010, only 25% of wholesale sales can go to group companies — a cap Myntra allegedly breached. The ED concluded that Myntra and others contravened Section 6(3)(b) of Fema, along with the consolidated FDI policies, resulting in a total contravention amounting to Rs 1,654.35 crore. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a complaint under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema), 1999, against Flipkart-owned fashion etailer Myntra, and its related entities for allegedly violating foreign investment rules to the tune of Rs 1,654.35 crore.

As EC begins process to pick new VP, Opp hopes to get act together, NDA sits pretty

While Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's 'sudden' resignation may have given the Opposition some ammunition to allege that all is not well in the NDA camp, it now has a new challenge before it: devising a collective strategy for the election of the next Rajya Sabha chairman. The Vice President is elected by members of both Houses of Parliament. Nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are also eligible to cast their vote. The Election Commission on Wednesday said it has begun the process of holding the vice presidential election and has started constituting the electoral college comprising MPs of both Houses of Parliament. The poll panel said it is also finalising returning officers for the election. 'On completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the election schedule will follow as soon as possible,' the EC said. The Indian Express spoke to several Opposition parties on their move forward. While they said there will 'definitely' be a candidate when the election happens, they are waiting to see how the government responds to the situation. 'We are waiting for the ruling side to make the next move. Once they pick a candidate, we will also discuss what has to be done,' a CPI(M) MP said. INDIA bloc leaders said the Congress will play a 'big' role in the elections as they are the 'largest' Opposition party. However, a Samajwadi Party MP added: 'They will need to consult all parties, bring everyone on board. The coordination will have to be done by the Congress. Since the resignation was so sudden and unexpected, the process will have to start from scratch.' Congress sources said the party is ready for the 'challenge'. 'We have coordinated with our allies on several issues and brought INDIA bloc parties together on the Pahalgam attack and Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR). We will do the same for this,' said a Congress Rajya Sabha member. But this coordination will be hard to pull off. Over the last year, the INDIA bloc has seen parties taking a different line over issues, with several parties even questioning the Congress's credentials to lead the alliance after a string of losses in state Assembly elections. Big edge to NDA, but tighter fight Unlike the presidential election, the electoral college for the Vice President only includes members of both Houses of Parliament, and does not include state legislators. Currently, there is one vacancy in the Lok Sabha (Basirhat, West Bengal), and five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha. Of the five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha, four are from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Punjab. The total strength of the two Houses together is 787 and the winning candidate needs at least 394 votes to be elected, if all eligible voters cast their votes. As numbers stand, the BJP-led NDA has 422 MPs. In the 542-member Lok Sabha, the NDA enjoys the support of 293 members. In the Rajya Sabha where the effective strength is currently 245, the ruling alliance has the support of 129 MPs, counting the nominated members who are likely to vote for the NDA nominee. Still, the election for Dhankhar's successor will likely be a narrow one compared to the last two elections. In 2017, when the first vice-presidential election was held under the Narendra Modi government, the contest was between then Cabinet Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Opposition nominee Gopal Krishna Gandhi. Naidu won the contest by 272 votes. In 2022, when Dhankhar was up against Opposition nominee Margret Alva, his victory margin was even larger, at 346 votes. The TMC had at the time abstained from polling, alleging that the Congress had not consulted it before announcing Alva's nomination.
