'I will not speak in English': BJP's Nishikant Dubey on Tamil Nadu MPs request in LS amid glitch in translating system

Mint5 days ago
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, on Tuesday, refused to speak in English, rejecting Tamil Nadu MPs request in Lok Sabha amid a glitch in translating system. He further claimed that the MPs 'only had a problem with Hindi.'
The BJP MP made the comments in the Lok Sabha after after Tamil Nadu MPs requested Nishikant Dubey to speak in English following a a technical glitch in the translator (system) in the Lok Sabha.
Responding to them, Dubey said "...It would have been better if you had asked me to speak in Tamil or Bengali. English is a foreign language, and your insistence on it reflects your mindset. Someone spoke in Bengali for half an hour, yet Tamil Nadu MPs didn't object. You only have a problem with Hindi. Congress and its allies don't like North Indians or Hindi. If you keep promoting English, we'll end up becoming England. 'Hum phir se gulaam ho jayenge' (We will become slaves again)..."
During the Monsoon Session of the Parliament on Tuesday, several leaders launched scathing attacks on the government about India's Operation Sindoor in the aftermath of the brutal Pahalgam terror attack in April that killed 26 people.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said the launch of Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam attack was a "symbol of the government's intelligence failure".
Uttar Pradesh's former chief minister also said that India's foreign policy has 'completely collapsed,' while labelling China as a 'monster' that will "gobble up our (India's) land and market".
"Who will take responsibility for the intelligence lapse in the Pahalgam attack?' Akhilesh Yadav said about the tragedy.
Rahul Gandhi also took a swipe at the government, daring PM Modi to call 'Trump a liar,' referring to the POTUS's repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
While India has consistently denied these assertions, the US President continues to highlight his alleged role in de-escalating tensions between the two nations following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Following Rahul Gandhi's claims, PM Modi while addressing the Lok Sabha, refuted claims made by US President Donald Trump regarding his role in halting India's military action against Pakistan.
He said said no world leader asked India to stop its military action against Pakistan during 'Operation Sindoor' after four days of conflict in May in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS, PWP come together to play Marathi card

MUMBAI: The upcoming local body elections in the state are seeing intriguing political manoeuvres – some a rekindling of old ties, others a reaffirmation of solidarity. Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS, PWP come together to play Marathi card On Saturday, the Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), three parties that have seen their strength wane in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), shared the stage and played the Marathi pride card to the hilt. MNS chief Raj Thackerays cautioned residents of Raigad district against 'land-grabbing by outsiders', saying it could be the beginning of the end of the Marathi manoos being in the district. Thackeray was speaking at the PWP's 78th anniversary celebrations in Panvel, in the presence of key leaders from the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). While Thackeray was chief guest, Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and state unit chief of the NCP-SP Shashikant Shinde also attended the event. This is the second time MNS and Sena (UBT) leaders have shared the stage after the political reconciliation between Raj and his cousin, Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray recently. The reunion of the two Thackerays has led to speculation that the MNS and Sena (UBT) could join forces for the upcoming polls. The move is also significant as the MVA wants to stage a show of strength in Raigad, where they have lost ground in recent years. In his brief speech, Raj Thackeray invoked Marathi pride and Marathi language, attacking the BJP-led Mahayuti government for attempting to buy farm land in Raigad for industries. 'You (Raigad locals) must be wary of attempts to grab your land for various projects. Land parcels in Raigad are being purchased by outsiders,' he said. 'Industries are being set up on these lands, but the locals are not being given employment in the companies and projects being set up here. I urge you to not sell your land at any cost. If they ask for your land, demand partnership in the companies. Once you are stripped of your land and language, you will vanish,' he added, referring to the Marathi manoos. Thackeray took a swipe at the Devendra Fadnavis-led Mahayuti government for its recent failed attempt to impose Hindi in primary schools in the state. He said if there was no compulsion to impose Hindi in 'Narendra Modi and Amit Shah's Gujarat', why impose it here? 'In one of his interviews, Amit Shah had said he is not a Hindi-speaking leader, and his mother tongue was Gujarati,' said Thackeray. 'There is a law in Gujarat which prohibits outsiders from buying agricultural land there. Here, we have been selling our lands to outsiders. Some leaders from Uttar Pradesh have purchased tracks of land in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. When I speak in the interest of the locals, the Marathi people and the state, I am accused of perpetuating divisive politics and regionalism. And what they are doing is in the interest of the state? They have taken major projects and establishments like the diamond bourse to Gujarat from Mumbai,' Thackeray said. Echoing Thackeray's comments, Sen (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said it was the need of the hour to come together to ensure that farmers and workers were not suppressed. 'It is also necessary to oppose the invasion of outsiders on the culture of Maharashtra.' The MNS and Sena (UBT) leaders appealed to the people to safeguard the culture of the state. Thousands of acres of land are being acquired by the government in Raigad for various projects including a bulk drug park, an industrial township, the Virar-Alibag corridor, Konkan Greenfield Expressway, among others. The MVA and the MNS, which is not a constituent of the MVA, are hoping to regain lost ground in Raigad ahead of the polls. The Sena (UBT) lost all three MLAs to the Sena led by Eknath Shinde during the split in the party, while the PWP recently lost its key leaders including party general-secretary Jayant Patil's brother Pandit Patil and nephew Aswad Patil. The 78-year-old party, which once had a stronghold in Raigad, is now a shadow of its former self, while the Congress and NCP-SP have conceded ground to the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the MMR. Now, constituents of the MVA believe the coalition should fight the upcoming elections together. A senior PWP leader said the Sena (UBT) and PWP have moved past their differences after the Lok Sabha, assembly and legislative council elections last year. The PWP's Jayant Patil lost the council election last year owing to differences within the MVA, especially the non-cooperation from the PWP during the Lok Sabha elections. These differences continued during the assembly elections, resulting in the defeat of key Sena (UBT) and PWP candidates. 'Sanjay Raut attending the meet on Saturday indicates that the Sena (UBT) and PWP have decided to bury the hatchet and work together,' the leader said.

Bail for Kerala nuns a feather in the political cap of BJP and Rajeev?

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The release of the two Catholic nuns after nine days of imprisonment in Chhattisgarh has come as a relief for both the Church and the state BJP. The fact that it was realised following the intervention of the prime minister's office (PMO) is being viewed as a feather in party state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar's political cap. TNIE was the first to report the PMO's intervention. The entire episode is now expected to function as a catalyst in Rajeev's efforts to intensify his party's Christian outreach programme in central Kerala in the coming days. For the Catholic Church, with its larger interest in the pan-Indian socio-political sphere, it has reiterated the need for friends in high places, especially in times of crises. 'In that sense the whole episode has been a give-and-take,' a Church official told on condition of anonymity. If the mission had failed it would have cast a shadow on Rajeev. It ended up proving his close ties to the corridors of power in Delhi.

BJP wants exclusion of 10% Muslim quota from BC list

Hyderabad: Telangana State BJP president N Ramchander Rao on Saturday demanded that the Congress government provide 42 per cent reservations specifically for the Backward Classes (BC) community, without allocating any shares to other communities. Speaking at a dharna organised by the BJP OBC Morcha at Dharna Chowk, Indira Park, Rao urged the Congress government to exclude the 10 per cent reservations for Muslims from the 42 per cent BC reservations list, asserting that the BJP opposes religion-based reservations. A large number of party workers attended the dharna, which was held to demand the implementation of the Kamareddy BC declaration. The Congress party had promised to provide 42 per cent reservations for the BC community. Rao criticised Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's government for politicising the issue of BC reservations by organising protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. He argued that the Congress party has been unable to enact the 42 per cent reservation policy and has instead blamed the central government to mask its failures. He demanded that Revanth Reddy apologise to the Backward Classes for not fulfilling his promises. Rao asserted that the BJP is the only party dedicated to the welfare of backward classes (BCs). He highlighted that the party is led by a BC leader, Narendra Modi, who serves as Prime Minister. Additionally, there are 27 BC leaders in his cabinet and five BC leaders serving as Chief Ministers in states governed by the BJP. The Congress party has never appointed a BC leader as Chief Minister in united Andhra Pradesh or Telangana. He pointed out that the Karnataka government promised reservations for BCs before the assembly elections but failed to uphold those commitments. Similarly, he claimed that the Revanth Reddy government is raising the issue of BC reservations right before the local body elections, but is unlikely to fulfil its promises. 'Let CM Revanth Reddy explain how much money he has spent on the welfare of BCs in the state so far,' questioned the BJP chief. Rao appealed to the BC community to support the BJP, which he emphasised is fighting for justice for their community. Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender stated that the Congress promised 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education, and jobs during the BC Declaration in Kamareddy. However, under the BRS rule, this reservation has been reduced to 23 per cent, betraying the BC community. Revanth Reddy has failed to fulfil his promises, including the commitment to implement 42 per cent BC reservations and conduct elections within six months. The BCs feel deceived, and Revanth Reddy's lack of integrity has been exposed. Additionally, promises were made regarding fee reimbursements for BC students, interest-free loans for BC youth, and increased pensions, none of which have materialised. The government has not released pending arrears, forcing families into debt. While a commission was formed for BC statistics, it lacks legal recognition, unlike Tamil Nadu's effective commission that operates under Article 340 of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, he added. In contrast, the BJP has appointed OBC ministers and achieved significant leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is well-regarded nationwide. The reality is that as long as the BRS and Congress exist, progress for BC leaders will remain stagnant. It is crucial for people to differentiate between those who merely promise and those who deliver.
