TNT overcomes San Miguel, keeps Grand Slam hopes alive
TNT kept its Grand Slam bid alive as it took down San Miguel, 86-78, in Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With the victory, the Tropang 5G extended the best-of-seven series to its sixth game.

Jamie Malonzo joins Kyoto Hannaryz in B.League
Jamie Malonzo will now take his talents to Japan. On Thursday, the team Kyoto Hannaryz announced Malonzo's signing. "First, I want to thank the team management for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity. Your support means a lot, and I'm eager to contribute to our success this season," Malonzo said in a statement on the team's website. "I am genuinely excited about what lies ahead, and I can't wait to hit the court with my teammates, bringing energy and determination to every game. In the recently concluded PBA Philippine Cup, Malonzo posted averages of 13.11 points, 6.33 rebounds, 2.17 assists, and 1.17 steals per game. Malonzo was drafted in 2021 by NorthPort before he was traded to Barangay Ginebra in 2022 where he played until the last conference. Venus Williams part of star-filled U.S. Open mixed-doubles event
The mixed-doubles field at the U.S. Open, which begins next month in New York, will be a star-studded event. The United States Tennis Association announced Tuesday the eight teams receiving direct entries into the tournament, as well as six wild-card entrants. Two more teams will take part as wild cards. Venus Williams, 45, received a wild-card entry and will play with big-serving American Reilly Opelka. The former World No. 1 in singles, Williams is an accomplished doubles player on the biggest stages. She won two Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles in 1998, as well as three Olympic gold medals and 14 Grand Slam women's doubles events with her younger sister, Serena. Venus played on the WTA Tour last week for the first time since March 2024 at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. After becoming the oldest player to win a WTA Tour singles match in 21 years, she lost in the second round in Washington to Magdalena Frech of Poland. The mixed-doubles competition in New York will feature most of the men and women ranked in the Top 10. The 16 mixed-double pairs will be vying for a $1 million first prize. These top players will not be fitting mixed doubles in with their singles play. Mixed-doubles matches will take place over two days, Aug. 19 and 20, before play in the main draw begins. Receiving direct entries were the following teams: No. 11 Emma Navarro and No. 1 Jannik Sinner; Belinda Bencic and No. 3 Alexander Zverev; No. 12 Elena Rybakina and No. 4 Taylor Fritz; No. 10 Paula Badosa and No. 5 Jack Draper; No. 7 Amanda Anisimova and No. 9 Holger Rune; No. 3 Iga Swiatek and No. 13 Casper Ruud; No. 4 Jessica Pegula and No. 15 Tommy Paul; and No. 5 Mirra Andreeva and No. 14 Daniil Medvedev. Cheers! San Miguel's Tiongson, Cahilig, Rosales, Calma celebrate first PBA title
It took them a while, but finally, they can call themselves PBA champions. Last Friday, Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, Kris Rosales, and JM Calma relished their first title as the San Miguel Beermen defeated TNT in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. Tiongson, Cahilig, and Rosales have been in the PBA for quite a while. Tiongson was drafted in 2014, while Rosales made his PBA debut in 2016. Cahilig, meanwhile, entered the league in 2017. "It means more to me. Obviously, with everything I went through in my career. Baka nung nag-start ang career ko, nawala ako sa PBA," Tiongson said. "I made it back and glory to God, and hopefully, win more championships," he added. ? Cahilig, who was also Tiongson's teammate back in Terrafirma, echoed the same sentiment. "It feels very good, I'm very happy. It's been a hard couple of years but it finally paid out," he said. Although Cahilig was able to play in two games only because of his hyperextended knee, the Filipino-Swedish big man said he is now more motivated after winning his first title.
