Deepshikha Nagpal breaks down, says was judged for negative roles in Shah Rukh Khan's films: ‘My daughter would break Koyla CDs, I was shattered'

Actress Deepshikha Nagpal recently sat down for an emotional tell-all on SCREEN's Dear Me… Season 2. While the actress shared heartwarming memories of working with superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Koyla and Baadshah, she also opened up about the emotional toll of being typecast in negative roles. Deepshikha, who has portrayed various antagonistic characters on both television and in films, revealed she was psychologically impacted by harsh comments and judgment—especially from her own family.
Talking about the downside of playing negative characters, Deepshikha said, 'After Baadshah, I was offered only negative roles. I didn't want to do those because people started judging me. Back then, negative roles weren't respected. 'Yeh toh side actress hai, bure kaam karti hai' (She's a side actress, does bad things). You don't want to hear that when you're living in this society.'

Deepshikha also opened up about playing negative roles on TV. She said, 'On TV, I also played negative roles because of typecast. Koyla was negative, even though Bindya was not negative; she was in love with SRK and saved Madhuri, but because she worked with Amrish Puri, she was negative. In Baadshah, just because I was with the villain, I was negative. TV also started offering such roles then, to perform negative roles are brilliant, you have full freedom. But I used to hate it because people were judging me. I would only keep explaining my choices to people.'
Deepshikha recalled how criticism for her negative roles deeply affected her personal life. 'My parents had passed away, so there was no one to guide me. My relatives judged me constantly. During the lockdown, I reflected on my career—I had done such big films, but when I came home from shoots, no one appreciated my work. Instead, I was told, 'What have you done? Tumne toh kapde utaare iss film mein… Tum toh aise ho, tumhare bacche tumko respect nahi karenge.' I felt ashamed. I started questioning why I ever did Koyla or Baadshah. I developed so many complexes that I stopped telling anyone what I was working on.'
'My daughter used to break Koyla CDs. All of it made me go silent—it affected me psychologically. I felt like a failure—as an actor, in my marriage, everywhere. I was broken inside. I eventually learned that there's no market for your sorrow, so I never carried that baggage to work. Acting became my escape. It helped me heal,' she added.
Recalling a moment, she decided to break through her suppression. Deepshikha shared, 'My father was very strict, so I had no boyfriends, I was that typical good girl. But any wrong picture in a magazine, a sensational headline, or even if anyone came to drop me home, there was judgment, and I would only cry. Even if I went for a meeting and the door was shut, I would get very anxious, I would think what people would be thinking outside. But let me tell you, nobody in the industry ever made a bad comment on me. When I would come out, people would weirdly stare at me, thinking what I had done inside. It would just choke me.'
'One day I was shooting for Barsaat Ki Raat in Manali, and I learned that a big actor was talking shit about me. He said that we had met for dinner, and I got very angry. I went and yelled at him when I confronted him, and he got so scared. That day Deepshikha changed, since that day I started screaming. Thank god that happened, because if you get suppressed, people will keep pushing you down,' Deepshika added.

Dhadak 2 box office collection Day 7: Siddhant Chaturvedi-Triptii Dimri's romantic drama earns its lowest amount ever at Rs 1 crore

Dhadak 2 box office collection Day 7: Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri starrer Dhadak 2 hit the theatres recently. However, the film failed to draw crowds to the theatres, despite the positive word of mouth. The Hindi remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal was expected to break records like Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's latest romantic blockbuster, but the box office numbers have been underwhelming till now. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, Dhadak 2 earned Rs 1 crore on the seventh day of release, which is its lowest amount ever. The total India net collection of the first week now stand at Rs 16.44 crore. The film recorded Rs 3.5 crore on its first day, and witnessed slight growth over the first weekend, with Sunday being the highest earning day at Rs 4.15 crore. However, the movie faced a dip again on Monday. On day 7 (Thursday) at the box office, Dhadak 2 had an overall 12.00% Hindi occupancy, with morning shows at 8.40%, afternoon shows at 13.99%, evening shows standing at 10.92%, and night shows at 14.68%. Dhadak 2 is facing touch competition from sevral other releases – Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur starrer Son of Sardaar 2, the devotional animated film Mahavatar Narsimha, and Mohit Suri's record-breaking romantic drama Saiyaara. In fact, Son of Sardaar 2 has overshadowed Dhadak 2 in its first week of release. Given that there are no new releases this Friday, Dhadak 2 has this weekend to show growth. ALSO READ | Dhadak 2: Shazia Iqbal destroys ancient Bollywood Dharma in the best Karan Johar production since Jigra An excerpt from SCREEN's review of Dhadak 2 read, 'The film doesn't draw back from scenes set in squalor, even if those visuals come wrapped in a Neelesh's outburst as he 'introduces' Vidhi to his lived reality — look, that neighbour is a sweeper in homes, that one cleans gutters. We aren't shown the people up close ; they are blurs in the distance. A romance flowers between the two, but the passion feels a trifle performative. Coming off from 'Saiyaara' where the two young lovers burn up the screen, about the only really effective thing about that film, you feel this even more intensely. Individually, though, both make us watch, and in some places, Dimri more than Chaturvedi.' Produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Zee Studios and Cloud 9 Pictures, the film is a spiritual sequel to the first part Dhadak, which was released in 2018. Also starring Zakir Hussain, Saurabh Sachdeva, Deeksha Joshi, Vipin Sharma, Saad Bilgrami and Harish Khanna, it focuses on the sensitive topic of casteism.

Ibrahim Ali Khan Is ‘Tailor-Made' For Camera, Says Sarzameen Director: ‘His Harshest Critics…'

Kayoze Irani, director of Sarzameen, shared that he and Karan Johar chose Ibrahim Ali Khan to star in the film. Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol and Ibrahim Ali Khan starrer 'Sarzameen' released on OTT on July 25. It marked Saif Ali Khan's son Ibrahim's second film after Nadaaniyan. In a recent interview, Sarzameen director Kayoze Irani said that he believes Ibrahim is 'tailor-made' for the camera, and has got a screen presence. He said that even his strongest critics would acknowledge his presence in front of the camera. He revealed that he and Karan Johar chose Ibrahim for the film. While speaking on Cyrus Broacha's podcast Cyrus Says, Kayoze Irani — son of Boman Irani and the director of Sarzameen — said that he saw something in Ibrahim Ali Khan. When asked who chose Ibrahim for the film, Kayoze replied, 'Karan sir and me." He further added, 'I did see something in him. The first thing I saw is that this boy is tailor-made for the camera. And even his harshest critics can't disagree. When he is in front of the camera, he has got a presence. He is made for the camera, and he is bloody handsome." 'He always had the physique. Atul (Mongia) also said that there is something really there. And we have to find his inner world. We have to find what is there inside of him that will come out so his performance is actually him. And that's what we focused on. And I used to have a little sheet with key words that I used to talk to him through the scenes about. Motivating words. So that's how it worked. And that's why he is getting a lot more love on this one," said Kayoze Irani. How Ibrahim Ali Khan Was Chosen For Sarzameen In another interview with SCREEN, Irani explained how Ibrahim was chosen for the film and the unique process behind his preparation. 'With Ibrahim, I was on the set of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). Ibrahim was an AD (Assistant Director). He was filling in for Ranveer Singh as they were setting up the shot." He added, 'Karan sir and I both were sitting behind the monitor and we felt he's got a face for the camera. So we decided to launch him. We did an audition, readings, and a six-month workshop by Atul Mongia with him. That's how we brought him onboard," he revealed. About Sarzameen Sarzameen follows the story of an Indian Army officer—played by Prithviraj Sukumaran—whose worst fears come true when he learns that his estranged son, portrayed by Ibrahim Ali Khan, has joined a militant group. The film attempts to explore generational trauma, ideological conflicts, and fractured familial bonds against the backdrop of a volatile region. The film starring Ibrahim, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Kajol marks Kayoze Irani's directorial debut. Produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, and Apoorva Mehta under Dharma Productions, in collaboration with Star Studios, the film was released on JioHotstar on July 25, 2025.
