Weinstein convicted of one sex crime in retrial

Perth Nowa day ago

A Manhattan jury has found Harvey Weinstein guilty on a sex crimes charge in a retrial after a state appeals court last year overturned the former movie mogul's 2020 conviction.
Weinstein, once one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, was accused by prosecutors in the case of raping an aspiring actress and assaulting two other women.
Weinstein, 73, pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex.
The jury found Weinstein guilty on one of the three counts he faced, which stemmed from his alleged assault of former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.
The jury found Weinstein not guilty of a charge stemming from his alleged assault of Kaja Sokola in 2002 when she was a 16-year-old aspiring actress.
The jury has not yet reached a verdict on the third count, which charges him with raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013.
They will resume deliberations on that count on Thursday.
In closing arguments on June 3, the prosecution told the 12 jurors that the evidence showed how Weinstein used his power and influence to trap and abuse women.
The defence countered that the accusers lied on the witness stand out of spite after their consensual sexual encounters with the Oscar-winning producer failed to result in Hollywood stardom.
Jurors reached their partial verdict on the fifth day of sometimes fractious deliberations.
The retrial began on April 23.
Weinstein has had a litany of health problems and attended the retrial in a wheelchair.
A jury had in February 2020 found Weinstein guilty of raping Mann and sexually assaulting Haley.
Sokola's allegation was not part of that case.
The conviction was a milestone for the MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men.
But the New York Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, threw out that conviction in April 2024.
It said the trial judge erred by letting women testify that Weinstein had assaulted them, although their accusations were not the basis of the criminal charges.
Although the 2020 conviction was thrown out, Weinstein has remained behind bars because of his 2022 rape conviction in California, which resulted in a 16-year prison sentence.
He is appealing that verdict.
More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct.
The retrial was handled by prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
They portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them.
The defence rejected that characterisation, saying Weinstein engaged in "mutually beneficial" relationships with his accusers, who ended up with auditions and other show business opportunities.
Weinstein co-founded the Miramax studio, whose hit movies included Shakespeare in Love and Pulp Fiction.
His own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after sexual misconduct accusations against him became widely publicis
ed. Weinstein has experienced several health episodes while being held at New York City's Rikers Island jail, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery.

At 87, Jane Fonda feels and looks fabulous, but does admit to one fear

If celebrity health and wellness is your jam, there can be no celebrity that embodies your message more closely than double Oscar-winning aerobics queen Jane Fonda, now 87 years young. Fonda is on our shores on a mini-speaking tour at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Thursday and Sydney's ICC Theatre on Sunday, brought out by wellness brand Wanderlust True North. The company's executive chairman is Radek Sali, who made his multimillion-dollar fortune similarly mixing up a celebrity/wellness brew that proved marketing catnip for Swisse vitamins, which was subsequently flogged to the Chinese for $1.7 billion in 2015. Last year a similar Wanderlust gig pulled in large audiences with Drew Barrymore producing onstage tears from singer Tones and I when the singer revealed fame had ended her relationship with her best friend. Before Thursday's main event, Sali hosted a VIP event for celebrities including podcaster and journalist Jessica Rowe, journalist Liz Hayes, performer Rob Mills and punters who had paid from $1000 for a premium meet and greet ticket. Loading At 6pm, the door opened to reveal a startled Fonda, clearly expecting a full house rather than the 200 seated for a media preview. But she recovered instantly with aplomb. The star took to the main stage for an intimate conversation with Hayes about passions, defining moments and how life shapes you. Well, as intimate as you can get at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre Plenary, which at full stretch can seat 5500. We can report that at age 87, Fonda is still looking fabulous and making people feel fabulous. Not so much the proof is in the pudding, but the proof is in the low-carb keto-approved spinach mushroom tomato mini frittata.

Judge declares mistrial at Harvey Weinstein rape trial

The judge overseeing Harvey Weinstein's criminal trial in Manhattan has declared a mistrial on a rape charge against the former Hollywood movie mogul, after one of the jurors refused to continue deliberations. The mistrial came a day after the jury convicted Weinstein on a separate sex abuse charge. It also acquitted him on a different sex abuse charge. Weinstein, once one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, faced a retrial that began on April 23 after a New York state appeals court last year overturned his 2020 conviction. The jury found Weinstein not guilty of a charge stemming from his alleged assault of Kaja Sokola in 2002 when she was a 16-year-old aspiring actress. Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber declared a mistrial after the judge said the jury could not reach a verdict on a third count, which charged him with raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. Weinstein faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced. He has separately been sentenced to 16 years in prison following a rape conviction in California. In a startling development on Wednesday, the jury foreperson told Farber that other members of the panel were shouting at him and threatening him for refusing to change his vote on the rape count. Farber sent jurors home for the day to give them time to cool down and instructed the foreperson to arrive in court separately on Thursday.
