Woman threatened by Ah Long after debt-ridden husband disappears

Michael Chong with a few of the victims at the press conference held at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur. .—ONG SOON HIN/The Star Reporter : Gek San KUALA LUMPUR: A woman from Seri Kembangan is pleading for loan sharks to stop harassing her family after her husband absconded overseas, leaving behind unpaid debts and a trail of threats. The 29-year-old administrative executive who wanted to be known as Choo, said her 26-year-old husband was sent to Hong Kong by his company on June 18 and was supposed to return on July 16. However, he has been missing since and has not contacted his family. "He didn't tell me about the business trip, only my father-in-law. I only found out about his return date through his company," she said at a press conference on Wednesday (30 July), accompanied by MCA public services and complaints department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong. She said that from June 20, her family began receiving threatening calls from loan sharks, claiming her husband had borrowed RM2,000 and now owed them RM8,000 with interest. The callers threatened to splash red paint on their house and set it on fire. "We've been married for over a year and have a 15-month-old daughter. Despite asking him many times, he never told us why he needed to borrow money," she said. She added that the loan sharks also shared personal details and photos of her and her family on social media. A police report has been lodged. She added that earlier this year, her family had helped her husband settle a RM100,000 debt. Meanwhile, a 48-year-old woman from Cheras is also seeking help after her family was harassed over her son's borrowings from loan sharks. The woman known as Wong, a labourer, said her 26-year-old son, a salesman, had taken out loans in the past, which the family had helped to pay off, namely RM5,000 in 2019 and RM22,500 in April 2025. She said Chong had assisted in negotiating both settlements. After the second incident, the son moved out of the family home. However, in June 2025, the family began receiving threatening messages, including a video of a car on fire. The mother later discovered that her son had borrowed an unknown amount of money from loan sharks again in July 2025.

Sungai Semenyih odour pollution traced to unlicensed recycling facility in Beranang

AN UNLICENSED recycling facility located near the Mahkota Industrial Park in Beranang, Kajang, was found to be the cause of odour pollution in Sungai Semenyih at 1.40am Monday (July 28) morning. The incident required the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) to issue a Code Yellow, signifying a potential threat to water quality and treatment plant operations. The odour which had a strength equivalent to 10 TON required the release of 360 MLD from the Semenyih Dam to dilute. From an official statement issued by Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, it was revealed that waste from plastic recycling activities had spilled from the facility's bulk containers. This discovered following investigations by LUAS and Air Selangor. The facility has been ordered to cease operations and clean up the spilled waste at all affected locations immediately. It will also face action for polluting water sources by LUAS, which has opened an investigation paper under Section 79(4) of the LUAS Enactment 1999 against the premises. If found guilty, they can be fined up to RM100,000, imprisoned for up to three years, or both. Additionally, there is a further fine of RM3,000 for each day the offence continues after a compliance notice has been served. At the same time, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) has issued a compound under By-Law 11 of the Collection, Disposal, and Disposal of Waste By-Law 2007. As the premises is unlicensed, the council has taken measures to seize the recycling facility. When contacted, Association of Water and Energy Research president Piarapakaran Subramaniam said in lieu of the repeated occurrences of water pollution incidences, more proactive action is needed to address the issue. 'There is a need to build a database of high risk pollution areas so that the information can be used in coming up with preventive measures,' said Piarapakaran. He also stressed that investigations should not just stop after the odour pollution has been diluted. 'The more important question is, what was the chemical compound and how long has the facility been releasing it with a lower or undetectable 'TON' value. Some chemicals have accumulative characteristics in the human body and will give a negative impact once it reaches a certain level,' he said. In her statement, Jamaliah stressed that the Selangor government, together with LUAS and relevant authorities will not hesitate to take stern action against those who pollute water sources.

‘Datuk' dupes trader out of RM100k in Thai cattle scam

JOHOR BARU: A trader lost about RM100,000 after being lured to invest in a cattle rearing project in Thailand by a 'Datuk' businessman. Mazli Hamzah, 37, who has been selling honey for 12 years, said he got to know the man last year during a business networking event. 'In March this year, he called me and asked to meet as he was interested in helping to grow my business, including finding ways to market my product overseas. 'We met frequently after that. Then, he told me about an opportunity to invest in a cattle rearing farm in Thailand. The cows are meant for Hari Raya Haji,' he told reporters yesterday. Mazli said he was initially sceptical about the venture but the 'Datuk', who is in his 40s, brought him to see someone at Menara Tabung Haji here. The two men talked about the cattle rearing project and Mazlin eventually became convinced that the business opportunity was a legitimate deal. 'Earlier this month, I handed the businessman more than RM100,000. Everything was done verbally. 'However, he did provide me with receipt after I gave him the money to invest,' he said. Mazli said his subsequent calls and WhatsApp messages to the 'businessman' went unanswered when he tried to find out about the outcome of his investment. 'I then went to his restaurant in Bandar Dato Onn here and saw him. I called his mobile phone, which he glanced at but he did not answer my call. 'As I walked towards him, he saw me and immediately left his restaurant,' he said. Mazli added that he had since lodged a police report. It is learnt that the businessman was fined RM200,000 by a Sessions Court last year for using a fake Datuk title.
