BJP MP Ravi Kishan: ‘Samosa matters to people. Elites don't get rustic humour'
*You raised the issue of standardisation of food items and prices. What was it about?
I come from Gorakhpur, where 98% of voters are poor. Parliament has been not functioning properly due to the ruckus over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
I am an artiste, and hence I am sensitive to people's issues. I have seen poverty, found bad oil in my food while eating out and spoilt my throat. In Europe and America, information like the kind of oil used in the food is mentioned (on the packaging).
*You spoke at length about samosas…
Since I am an artiste, I use humour. Elites do not understand rustic humour. It is an issue that matters to people. I understand that samosa matters to them. Even Rs 10 spent on food matters. I understand this, as in my student days I made Rs 1,300 a month by delivering newspapers.
Though a few people and the Opposition's IT cell are mocking me, I use the language that connects with the people and that is why I win with big margins.
The people who mock me did not see that I also raised issues like drugs or was rooting for inclusion of Bhojpuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
*What do you think the size of samosas must be?
People want to know what the food they are eating contains. They want to know what the size or quantity of the food item that they buy is. Be it a dhaba or a five-star hotel, everyone should be accountable. Currently, five dhabas on the same road are selling the same food item at different prices. Ever since my video has gone viral, people from across the country are messaging me with more such problems.
*How did you come up with the idea of raising this issue?
It has been on my mind for a while. I wanted to raise it but was not getting an opportunity during the Zero Hour. The other day, when the Speaker (Om Birla) allowed Zero Hour and allowed around 200 MPs to speak, I got my chance and started speaking. The matter has become an issue of debate now.
*How do you plan to take this forward?
I am from the ruling party so I will not talk openly about what the government must do. I am doing my homework. I will meet the minister concerned and discuss the remedy. It is a matter related to public health.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a meeting of the BJP-led NDA's parliamentary party meeting. Tuesday will mark six years since the abrogation of Article 370 with the J&K Congress observing it as a 'black day' and sitting on a dharna to press for the restoration of statehood. Meanwhile, the government is expected to push through some legislative business on Tuesday, amid the Opposition's continuing protests, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. In the Lok Sabha, at least four Bills will be considered for passage – The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024; The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024; The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025; and The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025. In the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to move a resolution for the continuation of President's Rule in Manipur for another six months with effect on August 13. The Lok Sabha has already passed this resolution. The Upper House will also consider for passage The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025. The mortal remains of veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch Shibu Soren reached state capital Ranchi on Monday evening, with thousands of people waiting outside the airport and lining the streets to pay their final respects to the former CM, affectionately known as Dishom Guru. Soren, 81, who was undergoing treatment at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month for kidney-related problems, passed away on Monday morning. On Tuesday, his body will be taken to his native village Nemra in Ramgarh district, where his last rites will be performed there, JMM sources said. The Telangana Congress, meanwhile, is going ahead with its protest Presidential assent for the Backward Classes reservation bills passed by the state legislature. Party workers led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy are expected to participate in a three-day protest beginning on Tuesday. On Tuesday, party MPs will move an adjournment motion in Parliament to demand a debate on the BC quota Bills. On Wednesday, the CM, along with his Cabinet colleagues and other Congress leaders, will stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar. Ghose panel faults KCR and team
Hyderabad: The Justice PC Ghose Commission of inquiry into the Kaleshwaram project has held former chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, former irrigation minister T Harish Rao , former Finance minister E Rajender and a bunch of senior officials, including the then Irrigation special Chief Secretary SK Joshi, responsible for the colossal waste of public money in the construction of the Kaleshwaram project. The Commission has observed in its report that Rao was directly and indirectly responsible for the irregularities in the project, right from its planning and construction to operation and maintenance of the barrages which are part of the project, sources said. The Commission pointed fingers also at former irrigation minister T Harish Rao, a nephew of KCR. A committee of experts had advised against taking up the Kaleshwaram project, but the BRS regime had 'intentionally suppressed' the report, they said. The sources said the officials had prepared a 60-page summary of the report, which runs into 665 pages. The summary mentioned the names of KCR 32 times, Harish Rao 19 times and former minister Eatala Rajender five times. Rajender is now a BJP Lok Sabha member. The report found Rajender, who was finance minister during the BRS regime, to be negligent, the sources said. Briefing the press after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister, apparently enthused by the damning evidence against former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and ex-ministers, said that since the report was prepared by an independent judicial commission, the question of resorting to politics of vengeance did not arise. Going by the findings of the Commission highlighted in the report, the government will initiate action against those who were involved in the 'embezzlement of public money in the construction of the Kaleshwaram project.' Amplifying the key findings, Revanth Reddy said that former chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao redesigned the Pranahita -Chevella project and constructed Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages which were damaged within three months of the construction of the Kaleshwaram project. Although an expert committee had submitted a report against Kaleshwaram, KCR chose to go ahead with the construction of the barrages 'without any planning'. The Chief Minister recounted that, ahead of the Assembly elections, the Congress had promised that, if voted to power, the government would order a probe into the collapse of the Kaleshwaram project. Accordingly, the state government constituted a judicial commission to investigate the misuse of Rs one lakh crore in the construction of the project. Revanth Reddy said that the cabinet reviewed the 665-page Ghose Commission report as well as a summary of the report submitted after vetting by a three-member official committee.
