Sonakshi Sinha breaks silence on box-office clash with Kajol's 'Maa', isn't upset with not being cast in 'Son Of Sardaar 2': 'If they have replaced me...'
Both films tap into the celebration of strong female narratives, a theme that Sonakshi is passionate about. For years, the actor said she has made a conscious effort to choose roles that empower women read more Actor Sonakshi Sinha says it is a significant moment that two women led films, her 'Nikita Roy' and Kajol-starrer 'Maa', are releasing side by side. 'Nikita Roy', a psychological thriller, is set to release in theatres across the country on June 27, alongside 'Maa', a mythological horror film. 'It's so cool that we've two films led by women that are releasing side by side. That's like a step in the right direction, and, amazingly, it's happening. And there's room for everyone. Both are different films, and we wish them well. It's like a good, healthy competition ,' Sonakshi told PTI in an interview. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I have seen the trailer of 'Maa' and I enjoyed it. Kajol is a phenomenal actress. She's somebody that I've looked up to and I admire. I'm looking forward to watching her film,' the actor added. Both films tap into the celebration of strong female narratives, a theme that Sonakshi is passionate about. For years, the actor said she has made a conscious effort to choose roles that empower women whether it is 'Akira', 'Dahaad' or 'Heeramandi'. 'I've made it clear with the choices I've made for the last 8-9 years, that I want to portray strong female characters. It's something that gives me joy to be able to shoulder a film and play a title role, like 'Nikita Roy', 'Noor', and 'Akira'. It's very empowering. It's a big thing to be able to do that. I want to be the hero of my films,' Sinha said. In 'Nikita Roy', Sinha plays the role of an investigator who debunks supernatural claims and exposes frauds and dismantles deceptive beliefs. But when she encounters a case that defies all beliefs, her convictions begin to falter. Written by Pavan Kirpalani of 'Phobia' fame, 'Nikita Roy' explores the fragile boundary between perception and reality, unravelling themes of paranoia, buried truths, and the human mind's darker recesses. It is helmed by Sonakshi's brother, Kussh S Sinha, who is making his debut as a director. 'It's a story that's been with me for a long time. It came to me about ten years ago, and when Kush came to me in 2021-2022 with the story, I said this is a testament to the fact that if a role is written for you, it always comes to you,' the actor said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With her brother Kussh at the helm, Sonakshi said it turned out to be a 'smooth' collaborative process. 'I thought that as siblings, we would have our squabbles on set, but that was not the case. On set, I was the actor, he was the director. He's clear in his head in terms of what and how he wants to portray a scene,' she said. Sonakshi said she is in a 'great' space professionally as she gears up for a slew of exciting projects, including her Telugu film debut, 'Jathadhara', where she stars alongside Sudheer Babu and the second season of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Heeramandi'. 'It's not about the language, it's about the story and role,' she said, adding, 'the script of 'Heeramandi' is being written and she is waiting to see how the world unfolds'. When asked about not being part of the sequel to her 2012 film, 'Son of Sardaar', and why female actors are being replaced in franchise movies, Sinha said she isn't 'upset' about it and believes the makers have a reason to not cast her. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I haven't had a conversation with anyone. But I'm sure they have a good reason , maybe the story or the character is not the same in the sequel. If they had replaced my character, then I would be worried. But I don't think that's the case. I'm not too upset about it. I wish them all the very best,' she said. 'Nikita Roy' also stars Arjun Rampal, Paresh Rawal and Suhail Nayyar in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Nickky Bhagnani and Viicky Bhagnani. Anand Mehta, Prakash Nand Bijlani, Shakti Bhatnagar, Mehnaaz Shaikh, and Prem Raj Joshi serve as co-producers.

Sitaare Zameen Par box office collection day 5: Aamir Khan's film surpasses Bhool Chuk Maaf and hits Rs 75 crore; no-streaming stand pays off
Aamir Khan's firm stand to not release his new film, RS Prasanna's coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par, on streaming has paid off. The actor, who hasn't sold the streaming rights of the film to any platform yet, claimed that he would decide on its home video release only after it finishes its theatrical run. He added the film wouldn't come on a streaming platform at least until a year. Sitaare Zameen Par continues to hold strong at the domestic box office even during weekdays. On Tuesday, its fifth day since release on June 20, it earned Rs 8.5 crore, which is as much as how much it earned on Monday. While that saw a massive drop from its Sunday or Saturday earnings of Rs 27.25 crore and Rs 20.2 crore respectively, the film passed the Monday test because the figure that day was only slightly lower than that of its opening day's Rs 10.7 crore. Now, as per industry tracker Sacnilk, the current domestic box office collection of Sitaare Zameen Par stands at Rs 75.15 crore. Two days after it crossed the Rs 50 crore milestone in India, the film has now breached the Rs 75 crore mark too. Given its current trajectory, it should enter the Rs 100 crore club this weekend, unless its pace is thwarted majorly by the new competitor on Friday. This Friday, on June 27, Vishal Furia's mythological horror film Maa will be released in cinemas. Starring Kajol and co-produced by Ajay Devgn, it comes from the world of Vikas Bahl's hit Shaitaan from last year, which earned Rs 147.97 crore at the domestic box office. Sitaare Zameen Par has also surpassed the lifetime domestic box office collection of Karan Sharma's romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. It's an interesting comparison because producer Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films opted for a polar opposite strategy than Aamir to release his film. On the eve of its initial theatrical release, Vijan announced that Bhool Chuk Maaf would now skip the cinemas and premiere directly on Prime Video India the following week. After leading multiplex chain PVR INOX sued Maddock Films, it was agreed that the film would first release in cinemas, but that would be followed by its streaming release in just two weeks. Also Read — Sitaare Zameen Par movie review: Aamir Khan delivers fully committed performance in heart-winning comedy While this was a one-off exception, Aamir has been insisting that even the norm of an eight-week window between theatrical and streaming releases is quite short. He even claimed that his last year's production, Kiran Rao's coming-of-age film Laapataa Ladies, would've earned Rs 100 crore if the audience didn't know it's dropping on Netflix soon. The film, featuring mostly newcomers, earned only Rs 20 crore at the domestic box office.
