Strictly Come Dancing star says 2025 series will be 'bigger than ever' after controversy
Strictly Come Dancing has been clouded by various scandals in recent years but one star is adamant things are about to change
BBC One's sparkling spectacle, Strictly Come Dancing, has navigated through a series of controversies in recent times, facing multiple internal probes and public apologies.
Yet, one of the programme's luminaries is convinced that the tide is turning for the beloved dance contest, with expectations for the forthcoming 2025 series to dazzle more than ever before.

Gorka Marquez, the 34-year-old dance professional, who has been gracing the Strictly stage since his debut in 2016 and is betrothed to Gemma Atkinson, his 2017 celebrity partner from the world of Hollyoaks, is unwavering in his belief that the show is on the cusp of a new era.

Speaking to Hello magazine, Gorka was barely able to contain his enthusiasm while divulging a sneak peek at what audiences can anticipate in the upcoming season.
He remarked to the magazine: "I feel like this year will be bigger and better than ever, Strictly is always bigger than ever, every year we make it bigger and better," reports Edinburgh Live.

Elaborating further, he shared: "I'm looking forward to it. I don't know much because everything is kept so secret. People think 'No, I don't believe you, you know everything.' I don't read [the rumoured lineup] I just don't read it."
With two small children, Mia, aged five, and one-year-old Thiago, life is a whirlwind for Gorka and Gemma as they balance demanding schedules alongside their parenting duties. The Strictly sensation admitted that between their busy lives, there's simply no spare moment to delve into any speculative chitchat about the show's potential celeb roster.

Gorka confirmed: "I don't even have time to read a book. I have two children, a new dog, a wife, a lot of work, a golden doodle named Benji and you know what, I don't want to read anything because I like the surprise. So the only time that I read about the cast is when they've been announced."
Due to his hectic schedule, the father of two confessed he relied on "Google or Wikipedia" to fill him in on details and celebrity facts after the cast had been revealed.

Recalling his debut series, Gorka described how he initially found it tough as Spanish national with little knowledge of British celebrities, but online resources soon became his go-to guide in his line of work.
Looking forward to 2025's series with renewed enthusiasm, given the controversy surrounding the 2024 instalments, Gorka's optimism seems justified.
Strictly Come Dancing is due to return to BBC screens later this year.

Lily Allen breaks her silence after being spotted on a 'date' with James Norton

Lily Allen has returned to social media after she was spotted looking cosy with actor James Norton, with the pair said to be 'enjoying each other's company' over the weekend Singer Lily Allen has posted on social media for the first time since being spotted looking cosy with British actor James Norton. The mum-of-two, whose marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour ended earlier this year, looked happier than ever as she spent some time with the Happy Valley actor over the weekend. Lily, 40, and James, 39, were spotted enjoying each other's company over the weekend, sparking rumours of a budding romance. The Smile hitmaker looked radiant in a black mini skirt and white t-Shirt as she spent time with James at the Lido Festival in East London on Saturday. ‌ James, who recently became single after parting ways with his model girlfriend, is also rumoured to be on Raya, where he has reportedly matched with Lily. The two were spotted at the festival, opting out of the VIP section to enjoy acts like Charli XCX among the crowd with cans on non-alcoholic beer. ‌ At one point, Lily was seen leaning into James, and the two appeared to be at ease with each other, with James visibly giggling at her antics. Festival-goers were reportedly doing double takes upon spotting the pair together as they sipped on alcohol-free beverages. Following the snaps circulating online, Lily returned to social media on Monday afternoon - but failed to address the rumours she has a new man in her life. The singer-turned-actress instead used her Instagram Stories to promote the latest instalment of her BBC podcast series with Miquita Oliver, Miss Me? Earlier in the day, Instagram's very own Gossip Girl DeuxMoi shared a message from a fan that was at the Chari xcx afterparty that claimed "Lily Allen [was] getting very cosy with James Norton". "Good for Lily especially after that drama with David," one Instagram user penned in the comment section, with another adding: "Alright Lily. What a rebound." ‌ Lily admitted she struggled in the wake of her split from American actor David after the former couple called it quits in December, ending their four-year marriage. Rumours swirled earlier this year that David had been unfaithful during their marriage, with claims of him being seen on a celebrity dating app while still wed to Lily. David has yet to respond to the allegations of infidelity or using a dating app during his marriage. In a candid admission during a live podcast recording at the Hackney Empire in London back in March, Lily reflected on the split and confessed to the audience, "I am not over it." ‌ She further revealed, "I am sort of running away. Maybe I will have a nervous breakdown." Meanwhile, David has also opened up about his personal struggles, admitting to having let himself go "physically and emotionally." His comments came shortly after he confirmed the split by appearing without his wedding ring on the red carpet at the Thunderbolts premiere. When questioned about the split, David initially responded with a mere "Oh boy," but later explained his decision to remain tight-lipped, citing his desire to protect the people involved and the reality of his life. In an interview with GQ Magazine, David expressed his reluctance to engage with the surrounding hype, which he believed was based on "hysterical hyperbole."

BBC EastEnders Zoe Slater returns after 20 years as fans are left thrilled

EastEnders viewers were left in disbelief as Michelle Ryan made her first appearance in Albert Square in 20 years, reprising her role as Zoe Slater after weeks of speculation EastEnders fans were left stunned following tonight's show on Monday, June 16 as Zoe Slater graced the screen for the first time in two decades. After weeks of speculation, it's now confirmed that Michelle Ryan has reprised her role as Kat Slater's daughter. It marks her first appearance since departing Albert Square back in 2005. In one of EastEnders most riveting storylines, Zoe Slater's life was thrown into turmoil when she discovered that her 'sister' Kat (portrayed by Jessie Wallace) was actually her biological mum ‌ This was a result of Kat being assaulted by her uncle Harry at just 13 years old. The plot which played out on the BBC soap took another twist in 2015 with the revelation that Kat had given birth to twins, indicating that Zoe has a twin brother. ‌ Zoe was last spotted in Walford in 2005 before jetting off to Ibiza. Her final dramatic scenes on the Square saw her sleeping with Dirty Den to feign a pregnancy with his son Dennis Rickman's child and conspiring with Chrissie Watts and Sam Mitchell to seek revenge against Den for his misdeeds, mistakenly believing she had killed him. It later emerged that Zoe wasn't Den's killer and that it was actually Chrissie who was the guilty party, leading to her being slammed behind bars while Zoe departed for sunnier shores, reports the Mirror. Fast forward twenty years, and Zoe made a sensational comeback to EastEnders, leaving viewers stunned as she appeared dishevelled after using Kat's credit card for a shopping spree. In a moment of sheer desperation, Stacey Slater (played by Lacey Turner) found herself seeking the aid of Alfie Moon (Shane Ritchie), who had just married Kat yet willingly returned to his stepfather duties. The episode culminated with Alfie extending a forlorn welcome to Zoe as she made her return, uttering a desolate: "Hello Zoe." The twist set social media ablaze as soaps enthusiasts at home couldn't contain their excitement. One Twitter user announced: "ZOE BLOODY SLATER #EastEnders." ‌ Another shared their elation with a tweet: "ZOE YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO YOU AIN'T MY MOTHER SLATER IS BACK! #eastenders," while another expressed disbelief: "An actual Zoe Slater return i can't believe my eyes #EastEnders." Yet, not everyone was caught off-guard by Zoe's reappearance. Tweets reflecting less surprise also surfaced: "Such a shame Zoe's return was leaked- imagine the shock we would have got #EastEnders," and its sentiment echoed by another: "Me acting shocked when Zoe Slater turns up even though her return got leaked weeks ago #EastEnders." ‌ Looking back at her decision to return to Albert Square, actress Michelle reflected on her return: "It all happened at the right time. I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character. "It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back. When Ben pitched me the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision." The show's producers have hinted that Zoe will make her comeback bearing 20 years' worth of "deep-rooted resentment" towards her mum, strained family ties, and siblings she has yet to meet. They added that the character is set for quite the rollercoaster ride upon her return. Michelle, while discussing Zoe's upcoming storyline in Albert Square, intriguingly noted: "I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess. She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own. She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story."

Zoe Slater may be broken as she returns to EastEnders, but she's 'back for good'

Actress Michelle Ryan has turned down the chance to return to the BBC soap several times and even insisted the 'door was closed', but after 20 years away she's changed her mind She was last seen leaving Albert Square for Ibiza in 2005, convinced that she'd actually killed her former lover Den Watts - and Zoe Slater has not set foot in Walford since. But tonight, after an absence of 20 years, viewers were shocked to see Kat Moon's daughter back on screen in EastEnders for the first time in two decades. And boy, was she in a bad way. ‌ In the storyline Zoe, played by Michelle Ryan, had reached out to her cousin Stacey for help. But when viewers caught up with the pair, Zoe was seen looking hungover and worse for wear, having stolen Stacey's credit card and gone on a bit of a bender. Stacey (Lacey Turner) then called for help in the form of Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) - now Zoe's step-dad again after remarrying Kat last week. 'Hello Zoe,' he said, before the duff-duff ending. ‌ Actress Michelle, now 41, said she was 'so excited" to be back. 'When I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision. It feels like coming home. After doing my first few scenes, it was like I'd never been away.' Long-term viewers will know that when Michelle was first in the soap as Zoe, from 2000, the character thought that Kat was her big sister, along with Little Mo (Kacey Ainsworth) and Lynne (Elaine Lordan). That all changed the following year with the iconic 'You ain't my mother' scene in which it was revealed that Kat was, in fact, just that. And the news kickstarted a 24-year cycle of resentment that the pair have never been able to get past. Michelle promised 'a lot of drama to come' and explained: 'Zoe is a mess. She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own. She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.' The actress will appear as Zoe in episodes across this week before the character goes off to sort herself out. She will then return as a permanent cast member later this summer. ‌ One insider said: 'It's pretty clear she's not in a good place and has got herself in a real bit of bother. Viewers will know it must be pretty bad for her to have reached out to her family, because she hasn't spoken to them for 20 years. But right now she's in a sorry state - she's broken - and that's why she's back.' Zoe had a string of countless failed romances during her time in Albert Square, including with Dennis Rickman and her mother's ex Dr Anthony Trueman, to whom she was engaged. Her last relationship led to her being embroiled in Den's murder along with 'Witches of Walford' accomplices Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) and Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf), after her affair with Den and resulting pregnancy came to light. ‌ She fled Albert Square for Ibiza in 2005 after first admitting the truth to Kat (Jessie Wallace) about Den's murder, but soon afterwards their relationship broke down and they have been estranged ever since. She now has twenty years of deep-rooted resentment towards her mum - plus siblings she has never met. The biggest shock over Zoe's true parentage came when Kat revealed the identity of her father in scenes which left viewers - and her screen grandad Charlie Slater (Derek Martin) - heartbroken. It was to stop Zoe from going off with her 'uncle' Harry - played by Michael Elphick - that Kat revealed the horrifying truth. ‌ Kat's Uncle Harry had raped her when she was 13 years old and when Kat fell pregnant with Zoe, her parents covered up the teen pregnancy by pretending Zoe was theirs. Kat had not told them who the baby's father was. In another shock twist it was later revealed that Zoe was actually a twin, with Kat having given birth to a baby boy (which she did not know about). ‌ Actress Michelle was just 16 when she took on the role of Zoe and quit the BBC soap five years later in order to try new acting roles. She moved to the US to star in the TV reboot of 70s classic Bionic Woman, which lasted just one series, and later appeared in movies including Frankenstein: Legacy and Cockneys Vs Zombies. Other TV guest roles have included BBC dramas Merlin, Doctor Who and Death in Paradise. On her decision to leave Zoe and EastEnders behind, Michelle once explained that she'd become 'quite bored' with playing the character. "Doing the same thing day in, day out- it's just so boring. I like to jump from different things,' she said. "I've always taken chances. I think that's how you progress by stepping out and doing different things. I really do like my freedom and jumping from job to job' And asked if she'd ever return to Albert Square, she insisted: 'I always saw EastEnders as an apprenticeship. I always wanted to go on and do different things. I have some really good friends from that show but the door is closed.' Many years on however, her position has clearly shifted. ‌ Michelle has been invited to reprise her role as Zoe several times since 2005, but until now has always turned down the offer. This time it seems the chance of being reunited with family members including Big Mo (Laila Morse) and Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) arrived at the perfect moment. 'It all happened at the right time,' she agreed. 'I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth and Kim Medcalf and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character.' ‌ Her return last night came in the debut episode for new executive producer Ben Wadey, who was thrilled with his big entrance as show runner. Ben said: 'Before I even stepped into the role, Zoe Slater was on my wish-list of returnees as although we haven't seen her on screen for twenty years, her character has transcended time due to her popular storylines. 'I was absolutely delighted when Michelle agreed to return, and I'm thrilled to welcome her back to Walford.' He hinted that there may be other faces from yesteryear on their way back. "Whilst I can't say too much at this stage, Zoe's return is just one of the many exciting storylines we have planned.'
