Popular AEW Star Suffers Injury In Bizarre Incident
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. AEW Trios Champion Samoa Joe has revealed that he is dealing with another legitimate injury. While promoting the new season of his Peacock series, Twisted Metal, Joe disclosed that he suffered a fractured ankle during filming. This revelation adds another layer to his current absence from AEW television. It was recently revealed that he is also in the company's concussion protocols following a post-match attack at the All In: Texas pay-per-view. Samoa Joe: "Limping Through It" In a new interview with Mike Johnson of PWInsider, Samoa Joe explained the ironic circumstances of his ankle injury. After a day of performing "crazy driving stunts," he suffered the fracture while doing a simple hop out of a car. "It was just parking, and I had to hop out the back on some really rocky, busted-up asphalt. I turned my ankle and spent the rest of the season taping it up and limping through it," Joe said. His decision to work through the pain is a testament to the toughness that has defined his legendary career. "Spending enough time in the ring as I have, it's no new territory," he added. Courtesy of AEW Samoa Joe's Compounded Problem This fractured ankle is now compounded by the concussion he reportedly suffered at the All In pay-per-view on July 12th. After his team, The Opps, successfully defended their Trios Titles, they were ambushed by the Death Riders faction. The angle ended with Joe being stretchered out of the arena. It now appears that the storyline attack also resulted in a legitimate concussion. Joe is currently recovering from both injuries simultaneously. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match Samoa Joe has built a multi-decade career on a reputation as one of the most legitimately tough and physical performers in the business. From his iconic, dominant reigns as ROH World Champion and TNA World Champion to his runs as NXT and AEW World Champion, the "Samoan Submission Machine" has always been known for his hard-hitting, realistic style. His willingness to continue filming a physically demanding role like Sweet Tooth while dealing with a fractured ankle is just the latest chapter in his legendary story of grit and determination. Revenge On The Horizon Despite the dual injuries, Joe has made it clear that he will be back in an AEW ring "sooner than later." In the interview, he stated that once he has cleared all "various medical protocols," he will be "back to business." That business is likely revenge on the Death Riders for the attack that put him on the shelf. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

Another Ul-Haq ton helps Yorkshire to cup Roses win
Metro Bank One-Day Cup, Group B, Clifton Park, York Yorkshire 295-3 (46.5 overs): Ul-Haq 117, Luxton 77; Shetty 1-35 Lancashire 294-7 (50.0 overs): Jones 102, Balderson 70; White 2-66 Yorkshire beat Lancashire by seven wickets Scorecard; Tables Group B leaders Yorkshire maintained their 100% start to this season's One-Day Cup as they confidently chased 295 to beat Lancashire by seven wickets thanks to a second successive century for in-form overseas opener Imam-ul-Haq. The White Rose won their third successive game, beating the previously unbeaten Red Rose, who had won one and had the other washed out. Lancashire posted 294-7 thanks largely to an entertaining opening 102 off 88 balls from Michael Jones in front of a sell-out 4,500 crowd at Clifton Park in York. But Ul-Haq was the cornerstone of Yorkshire's reply with 117 off 124 balls and he shared a defining 153 for the second wicket with Will Luxton, who hit 77 off 63, as the hosts won with 19 balls to spare. Pakistani left-hander Ul-Haq, who hit 10 fours and five sixes during Tuesday's innings, is now the leading run-scorer in this season's One-Day Cup with 331. He scored a career-best 159 in victory at Northamptonshire last Friday. T20 Blast to be revamped in 2026 Yorkshire batter Luxton signs new deal until 2027 Vacant chair role at Lancashire 'appeals' to Lloyd Earlier, Ormskirk-born ex-Red Rose Jones posted his first century since rejoining Lancashire from Durham over the winter. He reached a 33-ball 50 and helped them to 100-1 in the 18th over. Either side of losing George Bell lbw playing to leg against two-wicket seamer Jack White, Jones hoisted three sixes over long-on and long-off and hit one arrow straight off Ben Coad's seam. He later pulled successive sixes off Matthew Revis towards the latter stages of a 92-run stand with his captain Marcus Harris, who was the first of two wickets to fall in as many overs as the score fell to 136-3 in the 24th. Harris was caught behind driving at Revis for 32 before Coad trapped Josh Bohannon lbw without scoring. Jones reached his century off 79 balls and hit seven sixes in all. But the visitors were checked impressively through the middle of their innings. They were limited to 40 runs from the end of the 25th over - 143-3 - to the end of the 35th, where they reached 183-4 having lost Jones slicing White out to deep cover. Replays suggest George Balderson was reprieved on 18 as he pulled Dan Moriarty for four. Him stepping on off-stump in the process went unnoticed by the umpires. Balderson made a dynamic 70 off 48 balls as Lancashire fell just short of 300 in excellent batting conditions. Tom Bailey had Adam Lyth caught behind driving early in Yorkshire's chase, which fell to 16-1. But Luxton kicked things into life by taking three fours and six - all through leg - off Will Williams' first four balls, in the 11th over, as the score moved to 57-1. From there, Luxton and Imam cruised along against a Lancashire attack lacking depth, understandable with half a dozen bowlers on Hundred duty. By the time Luxton reached his 50 off 42 balls, Yorkshire were 107-1 after 20 overs. Imam's third in as many matches - this off 72 balls - followed shortly afterwards. When Luxton miscued Charlie Barnard's left-arm spin to long-on, Yorkshire were still a long way ahead at 169-2 in the 30th over. Imam reached his latest hundred off 118 balls by pulling Bailey for his third six before falling caught at midwicket on the pull against Arav Shetty's spin - 220-3 in the 37th. James Wharton and Revis wrapped things up with 41 apiece in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 75. WWE Reportedly Planning Major John Cena Match
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. WWE is reportedly planning its most aggressive competitive move against AEW to date. New reports indicate the company will run a main roster premium live event on the same night as AEW's All Out pay-per-view in September, and the show will be headlined by a legendary, WrestleMania-caliber match. According to reports from POST Wrestling and the Wrestling Observer, the new, yet-to-be-named WWE event is planned for Saturday, September 20th. The show's main event is slated to be Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena. Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena Showdown The planned WWE event in Indianapolis, Indiana, is expected to go directly head-to-head with AEW's All Out pay-per-view, which is scheduled for the same night at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer confirmed the blockbuster main event for the WWE show. "The main event for the show is Brock Lesnar and John Cena, so it's a big one," Meltzer said. He noted that this is the reason Lesnar is not scheduled for the Clash in Paris event at the end of August, as WWE was saving his return match for this specific show. The Final Chapter Of A Legendary WWE Rivalry The match is the direct result of the shocking conclusion to SummerSlam just over a week ago. At the event, Brock Lesnar made his controversial return to WWE after a nearly two-year absence, brutally attacking John Cena after his main event match. The match in September will be the epic final chapter in their violent, historic rivalry and a key part of Cena's 2025 farewell tour. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match While Lesnar's return has been met with a mixed reaction due to his name being included in the Janel Grant lawsuit, WWE is moving forward with one of the biggest dream matches in modern history. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 20: John Cena celebrates after defeating Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship during WrestleMania 41 at Allegiant Stadium on April 20, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 20: John Cena celebrates after defeating Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship during WrestleMania 41 at Allegiant Stadium on April 20, 2025 in Las Vegas, move marks a major escalation in the competition between WWE and AEW. While WWE has previously run its developmental brand, NXT, on the same day as AEW pay-per-views, this is the first time a main roster premium live event will go in direct competition. By loading their show with a main event as massive as Lesnar vs. Cena, WWE is making an aggressive play to draw viewers away from one of AEW's "big four" pay-per-views of the year. This is the most direct instance of head-to-head competition between the two companies since the "Wednesday Night War" ended in 2021. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.
