Yoga sessions take centre stage
Apart from intense rehearsals, beautification works and clean up exercises are being carried out at several parts of the city.
Encouraging people to take part in one of the biggest and greatest events to be held under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, ministers, district officials and department heads come together to make it a grand success. With the largest ever participation for the IYD celebrations, the event scheduled in Visakhapatnam on June 21 is expected to break a host of records.
On Thursday, a walkathon was organised under the aegis of the AYUSH department and district administration in the city to make people understand the magnitude of the event and encourage them to contribute to its hassle-free conduct. AP Ministersr Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, Satya Kumar Yadav and S Savitha reiterated that the event is a household celebration and exhorted people to become part of it. The walkathon, highlighting the goodness of yoga, began at Andhra University Convention hall to Vishwapriya function all. 'Allot an hour a day for yoga practice to derive holistic health benefits,' the ministers underlined. With a target of 2 crore participation in the IYD event, the ministers informed that the set target was achieved within a short span of time.
Ministry of AYUSH secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha exhorted people to participate in the celebrations enthusiastically. Programmes are planned out to bring yoga closer to people and encourage them to practice it on a daily basis. The walkathon saw participation of Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, MLC Vepada Chiranjeevi Rao, among others.
As the beach stretch, especially along the Visakhapatnam east constituency and Bheemunipatnam segment, has been made a no-vehicle zone, commuters take diverted routes. Following which, traffic bottlenecks are witnessed in various junctions.
Waltair of East Coast Railway organised awareness rallies across various locations over the division. The awareness rallies saw participation from sportspersons, railway staff, scouts and guides, civil defence personnel and family members from local colonies promoting greater awareness and engagement in the practice of yoga.
On June 21, the International Yoga Day, a large-scale yoga session will be conducted at the Waltair Railway Cricket Stadium.
Making students understand the importance of practicing yoga, trainers organised a session for the girls at the Government Residential School for Visually-Challenged Girls in Visakhapatnam. The students were given training in various asanas on the occasion in which they took part enthusiastically.
As part of the IYD celebrations, Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar students gear up for Yogandhra 2025 with great enthusiasm.
800 Students studying from Classes VII to X took part in a pre-yoga session under the guidance of yoga instructors. The students have been undergoing training sessions for the past one week.
At SR Digi School, students practiced at a session organised at the campus on Thursday. Headmistress Y Padmaja explained the benefits of yoga and its importance to the students who were given training in Surya namaskar and other asanas, pranayama techniques.
Ahead of IYD celebrations, a session was organised by Nature Cure Hospital at Maharanipeta. Led by instructor Sistla Srilakshmi, yoga sessions are carried out at the hospital premises on a regular basis.
The instructor expressed happiness over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's participation over Yogandhra-2025 and stated that the large-scale promotion of yoga aids in reaching out to more communities and encouraging them to consider yoga as an integral part of life.

Tiger Woods to lead group that could reshape the PGA Tours competitive model
Agency: Atlanta, Aug 20 (AP) Tiger Woods is a major player in golf again, this time without clubs. He was appointed Wednesday to chair a new committee charged with taking a fresh look at the competitive model for how the PGA Tour runs its tournaments. Brian Rolapp, three weeks into his role as the tour's first CEO, announced the nine-member 'Future Competition Committee" and said it would have a clean sheet to consider changes that uphold traditions without being tied to them. 'This is about shaping the next era of the PGA Tour," Woods said in a social media post. Rolapp didn't have details on several issues he faces as he takes over for Commissioner Jay Monahan, including the future of a sport that has been splintered by Saudi money that created the rival LIV Golf League and lured away a number of top players. The PGA Tour's negotiations with the Public Investment Fund have stalled, and Rolapp did not make that sound as if it were a top priority when asked about the fans' desire to see all the best players together more often. 'I'm going to focus on what I can control," Rolapp said. 'I would offer to you that the best collection of golfers in the world are on the PGA Tour. I think there's a bunch of metrics that demonstrate that, from rankings to viewership to whatever you want to pick. I'm going to lean into that and strengthen that. 'I will also say that to the extent we can do anything that's going to further strengthen the PGA Tour, we'll do that," he said. 'And I'm interested in exploring whatever strengthens the PGA Tour." Woods, who has played only 10 times on the PGA Tour since his February 2021 car crash and has been out all of this year with a ruptured Achilles tendon, already serves on the PGA Tour board without a term limit. Now he will lead five players from the board — Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell — along with three from the business side. That includes baseball executive Theo Epstein. Rolapp is not trying to reinvent a sport that held its first championship in 1860. He said among his early observations, after two decades at the NFL, was the strength and momentum of the PGA Tour. 'My key takeaway when you boil all this down is that the strength of the PGA Tour is strong, but there's much more we need to do, much more we need to change for the benefit of fans, players and our partners," he said. He said the committee would be guided by parity (he conceded golf already has that), scarcity and simplicity. The tour released a 2026 schedule on Tuesday that adds another $20 million signature event, this one to Trump National Doral, as part of a 35-event schedule from January through August. 'The goal is significant change." He did not set a timetable for any of it. The Tour Championship ends this week at East Lake for the top 30 players. The tour has eliminated the built-in advantage for top seeds so that everyone starts from scratch. The committee is a smaller version of the PGA Tour Enterprises board and policy board. Joining Epstein from the business side are board chairman Joe Gorder and John Henry of Fenway Sports Group, who leads the Strategic Sports Group that invested $1.5 billion — with the potential to double that — into the tour in a minority investment announced 18 months ago. Rolapp said he had a lot of ideas how to the use the money but none he was ready to share. But he said the involvement of SSG was a big reason he took the job. 'Not only does it provide necessary capital as we work through this competitive model and improved commercial model, I also think it also brings learnings from other sports, which I think is beneficial … to grow the PGA Tour. 'I think outside perspective is always a very good thing, as long as it's applied in the right way. I think SSG has brought that and has been helpful." US Open: Swiatek finds the joy and the wins again
Mumbai: Iga Swiatek had not been herself for the first half of the year. The dominance with which she would conquer opponents and titles had suddenly been replaced by a player second-guessing her every move. And in one unfortunate incident at Indian Wells, she hit a ball into the stands in frustration, only for it to come dangerously close to a ball boy. Swiatek had not done what she was expected to do. But in July, on a surface she admitted she was least comfortable on, she did the unexpected. She won the Wimbledon Championships. Just when it seemed that the wheels were coming off, she plowed back into form. Last week, she picked up another title for the first time in her career, clinching the Cincinnati Masters. And now as the US Open beckons, the in-form six-time Grand Slam champion is a firm title contender. 'I guess it's true that the best things come to you when you expect them the least,' Swiatek posted on social media after winning in Cincinnati, her 24th singles title and 11th WTA 1000 level triumph. 'I'm super proud of the work we put (in) as a team to make this happen. Grinding no matter what, building resilience and patience. It's not always easy, doesn't come naturally. It's just constant and deliberate work and believing that anything is possible. I couldn't be happier.' The belief is back in her game, and that has taken her back up the ranking ladder - she was the eight seed at Wimbledon but is now the world No.2. But more importantly, within the unforgiving grind of professional sport, she finds herself being happy on court once again. 'I gotta say that I feel that these last couple of weeks were the best part of my season,' she said at the Wimbledon Champions Ball, days after her triumph in London. 'I really enjoyed myself on the court, even though I didn't expect that on grass. I just want to get back on court and have these feelings again.' This is in stark contrast to what she felt once the US Open ended last year. After her quarter-final finish in New York last season, she was informed that she had tested positive trimetazidine (or TMZ). Swiatek argued that the banned substance entered her system through the contaminated medication she had been using to deal with sleep issues and jet lag. The entire incident made her a controversial figure on tour, especially since Swiatek, a high-profile player, had been given only a one-month ban, which she completed in the off-season, leading to allegations of her receiving preferential treatment from tennis' governing bodies. In a social media post in March, Swiatek revealed that she had spent 'three weeks crying daily, and (not) wanting to step on the court' during that period last year. But now she has started to hit the right notes on court. At Wimbledon, she dropped only one set before going on to clinch the title with a stunning 6-0, 6-0 scoreline in the final against Amanda Anisimova. And on Monday in Cincinnati, where her best finish was in the semi-finals in 2023 and 2024, she won the title without dropping a set the entire tournament. The powerful forehand has become as destructive as before, the backhand is back in rhythm. And under coach Wim Fissette, who coached the likes of Kim Clijsters and Naomi Osaka to Grand Slam titles, Swiatek has become even more aggressive on her serve.
