Jackson Van De Brake drives in five runs and North Carolina routs Clemson 14-4 for ACC championship
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Jackson Van De Brake drove in five runs, including a three-run home run in an eight-run fifth inning, highlighting North Carolina's 14-4 victory over Clemson on Sunday in the championship game of the ACC Baseball Tournament.
Hunter Stokely and Tyson Bass both hit two-run home runs with one out in the fifth inning, giving North Carolina an 8-0 lead but the Tar Heels weren't done. Kane Kepley delivered an RBI-single and Van De Brake followed with his blast to left center, making it 12-0.
North Carolina added two runs in the sixth on a fielder's choice and a groundout.
Tar Heels starting pitcher Ryan Lynch threw four scoreless innings, allowing two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Clemson loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning, but Lynch got out of the jam with two strikeouts and an inning-ending grounder to second.
Cam Cannarella hit a two-run home run for Clemson in the seventh inning and the Tigers added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Tar Heels scored in each of the first three innings. In the first, Gavin Gallaher laced an RBI-double; in the second Kepley's sacrifice fly scored one run and Van De Brake added a run-scoring single; and in the third, Alex Madera drove in Gallaher with a single.
Olin Johnson (2-0) was credited with the win and B.J. Bailey (2-5) took the loss.
Gallaher and Madera had three hits each.
The Tar Heels (42-12) will be making their 37th appearance in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. They won the conference tournament for the third time since 2019.
The Tigers (44-16), seeking an at-large bid, would be making their 47th appearance.
Tournament selections will be announced on Monday. ___

Where do things stand with the Tar Heels' offensive line? As we sit just under two weeks away from the start of the 2025 college football season, the North Carolina Tar Heels are one of the programs with a lot of attention. And rightfully so. With the hiring of Bill Belichick as head coach, the program turned a new page and are now all-in with turning this program around. Belichick has been on the job for months now, recruiting and holding practices to help the program get on the right track. But even so, there are some big questions surrounding this team, including the offensive line. The starting five is still to be determined, and with Austin Blaske's injury, it has complicated things. As of now, Belichick and the Tar Heels are still trying to find the combination that works best and called it a work in progress during Wednesday's media session. 'It's very much a work in progress, but we know a lot more than we did. A lot more, but we still have a long way to go," Belichick said. "And players are improving, and we'll just see what the rates of improvement are. Some guys are maybe improving at this kind of rate and other guys are here. Then there's a talent level, and then it's how players work together. It's not necessarily, you know, these five players individually, it's what five players collectively function together the best, and some of that involves communication and adjustments and so forth and so again. We're just trying to find not only the best players, but ultimately the best offensive line combination that works." The good news is that Belichick and the staff have had these past few weeks to evaluate the line and try to see where everyone best fits. Wisconsin football starting quarterback named to Golden Arm Award watch list
Wisconsin football starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list on Tuesday. Presented annually, the award honors the top senior or upperclassman quarterback in the nation. Notable past winners include Shedeur Sanders (2024), Jayden Daniels (2023), Mac Jones (2020), Joe Burrow (2019), Deshaun Watson (2016), Marcus Mariota (2014) and Andrew Luck (2011). Edwards Jr. would become the second Badger to pocket the nod if he emerges from an impressive pack of players to do so, joining former pass-thrower Scott Tolzien (2011). Entering his first season in Madison, Edwards Jr. was one of 58 quarterbacks from across the country to land a spot on the watch list. Notable names in this year's batch include Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Cade Klubnik (Clemson), Arch Manning (Texas), LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina), Drew Allar (Penn State) and John Mateer (Oklahoma). His completion percentage, coupled with his 375 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground over three years, suggests he could help the team excel in short-yardage situations.
