Ex-Wanderers boss Ian Evatt installed as favourite for vacant Cardiff City job

Yahoo20-05-2025
FORMER Wanderers boss Ian Evatt has been installed as the favourite for the vacant job at Cardiff City.
The 43-year-old has been out of jobs" target="_blank">work since leaving Bolton in late January but is now rated above the likes of Des Buckingham and Steven Gerrard in the bookies' reckoning.
Cardiff are searching for a new manager to lead them back into the Championship after relegation and that a shortlist of around 10 names has now been drawn up.
Wales online claim at least one candidate has already discussed the job prior to the official interview process, which will be overseen by a subcommittee comprising of academy head Gavin Chesterfield, ex-Rangers and Swansea sporting director Mark Allen and a representative from sporting agency Wasserman – who also look after the affairs of ex-Liverpool midfielder Gerrard.
The club had hoped to have a new man in charge by the end of this month, and reports suggest the Bluebirds will prioritise experience of English football and CVs which include a promotion.
Evatt led Bolton out of League Two via automatic promotion in 2021 and took them to two play-offs, losing in the final last season against Oxford United. He also won the Papa Johns Trophy in 2023 but suffered a poor start to the most recent campaign and left the club in ninth spot before being replaced by Steven Schumacher.
Since leaving Bolton Evatt has done some media work and he was also linked strongly to the Carlisle United job before the appointment of Mark Hughes.
Speaking about the circumstances of his departure on Sky Sports in March, he said: 'It was more my decision, to be honest. I had a feeling that I needed a break, just to refresh and a new challenge.
'Five years is a really long time and in current football, modern day football. I was speaking to the guys before about old managers having that longevity.
'They didn't have social media to deal with and the pressures that brings. It was time for me really to take a step down, re-assess, grow again, get better as a manager and come back.
'The club has been left in good hands. Steven is a really solid manager and he's had a great start. I wish them all the best.'

Cardiff dispensed with two managers last season – Erol Bulut and Omer Riza – with Aaron Ramsey put in caretaker charge for the last few weeks of the season.
The former Wales international is also in the running for the job, although reports suggest experience is preferable.

Newcastle hint at Alexander Isak decision in response to striker's bombshell statement

Newcastle United have rejected Alexander Isak's claim that he was told he could leave this summer and hinted at no future deal for an exit materialising in the closing stages of the transfer window. The saga turned ugly on Tuesday evening with the Swedish striker accusing the club of 'broken promises' and maintaining that 'trust is lost' between the parties. But the Carabao Cup winners hit back with their own strongly-worded statement, hitting Isak's hopes of a move to Liverpool, who had a £110m bid rejected earlier this summer, by underlining that they 'do not foresee those conditions [of a sale] being met]' before the deadline. A club statement read: 'We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. 'We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. 'As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met. 'This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.' Isak has not played for Newcastle in pre-season or in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa, missing their tour of Asia with what was attributed as a minor thigh injury, and was training separately from the rest of the team. But he blamed Newcastle for the breakdown in their relationship, writing on Instagram: "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' Isak claimed his Newcastle teammates have given him their backing during a summer transfer saga. Manager Eddie Howe has said Isak's future is out of his hands but called on Saturday for a resolution, saying the 25-year-old could end the current impasse. Newcastle, meanwhile, began the season without a striker with Isak out of the picture and after failing in their attempts to sign Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo. Isak scored 23 Premier League goals last season to be voted a member of the PFA team of the season but opted to miss Tuesday's awards. He explained: 'I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals. First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.' Newcastle host Liverpool on Monday while Arne Slot has said he wants to add one more attacker to his squad this summer.

The Fifa rule that hands Alexander Isak transfer leverage over Newcastle

The ugly Alexander Isak transfer saga continues to drag on, with a now public back and forth between the striker and Newcastle United, as he tries to force through a move to Liverpool. But there is a little-known Fifa rule on transfers which could play into Isak's hands and provide him some leverage in the dispute. The Diarra ruling It all stems from the Lassana Diarra ruling, when the former France midfielder won his case against Fifa at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) last year. Diarra was able to prove that Fifa's rules were too restrictive on players who wanted to move clubs, forcing them to overcome obstacles and pay significant costs to switch clubs when they desired but their current club did not. Essentially, the CJEU concluded that footballers deserved similar rights to any normal worker who might wish to switch jobs, and that Fifa's rules should comply with EU labour and competition laws. An ongoing class-action lawsuit is attempting to win compensation for the many other players who may have lost earnings by Fifa's unlawful rules. Fifa has since altered its rules in the players' favour, although even these amendments have been criticised by players' union Fifpro for not going far enough to empower players to exit club contracts when they choose. What does article 17 say? What Fifa has done is amend article 17 to permit players to unilaterally terminate their contract without reason, so long as they have been under contract for at least three years, or two if they are 28 or older. Isak is 25 and has been under contract at Newcastle for three years, after joining in the summer of 2022. Under Fifa's new rules, Isak would be permitted to invoke Article 17 next summer – it must be invoked within 15 days of the end of the season. Once the transfer window opens, Isak would then be free to join whichever club he chooses. How much money would Newcastle receive? Newcastle would be entitled to compensation, which would need to be agreed between the clubs. If it couldn't be agreed then the case could be referred to Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber, or even the Court of Arbitration for Sport. But Newcastle would be unlikely to receive anything close to the kind of figure that Liverpool have already offered, at around £110m, and which the hierarchy at St James' Park rejected. What happens next? There is no evidence that Isak's representatives have threatened Newcastle with invoking article 17 next summer, but all parties will likely be aware that it is another element to the saga, one that gives Isak an escape route. Isak has set out his stall, perhaps controversially, to burn his bridges with St James' Park in a bid to get his move over the line. Liverpool have already made a significant offer, and must now decide whether to come back with one more at an even higher level. And Newcastle must consider whether Isak really can be integrated back into Eddie Howe's squad, or whether taking the money is the best course of action for all involved.
