KSCA's pride turning into dead asset

KSCA's pride turning into dead asset

Deccan Herald13 hours ago
Bengaluru: The M Chinnaswamy Stadium, one of Bengaluru's biggest landmarks, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The unfortunate events of June 4 have put the stadium's very existence in question. On that fateful day, lakhs of Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans assembled at the venue to celebrate their beloved team's maiden IPL win but their joy soon turned into tragedy as 11 of them lost their lives in the ensuing stampede as the ecstatic crowd pressed forward for a glimpse of their heroes..While the iconic venue has attracted more than its share of attention in the last couple of months, there are at least four grounds in the mofussil centres that are crying for some action. Well-equipped enough to host first-class matches, including India A fixtures, the facilities in Mysuru, Shivamogga, Hubballi and Belagavi -- all built at a total cost of around Rs 75-85 crore -- have been reduced to KSCA's white elephants with little or no match allocations in the last three years. .Now, without a shadow of doubt, KSCA has been one of the pioneering bodies in domestic cricket in the country in not only taking the game to mofussil centres -- having built four fully functional grounds across the state that very few associations could boast about -- but also successfully tapping into the hinterland talent through the launch of its pioneering project Talent Resource Development Wing (TRDW) wherein Talent Resource Development Officers (TRDO) would travel deep into the interiors of the state to unearth talents. Launched in 2001 during Brijesh Patel's second tenure as KSCA secretary, its success even inspired the Board of Control for Cricket in India to implement the system at the national level. .In later years when Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath assumed the association's reins, they focussed on developing infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Subsequently, three brand new stadiums were commissioned in Shivamogga, Hubballi and Belagavi while the Gangotri Glades -- later renamed the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Stadium -- was upgraded with better facilities. An unprecedented 60 turf wickets were laid across Karnataka, covering most of the districts. .Successive regimes over the years under different sets of administrators have shown vision and dedication to improve infrastructure in the aforementioned centres. All these venues have, or at least had, well-equipped dressing rooms, quality outfields, seating for spectators and practice facilities that have been deemed fit enough to host even India A games, in which the likes of Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Cheteshwar Pujara, among others, have taken part. .It was with this intent of popularising and developing the game that the successive administrators allotted Ranji Trophy and other first-class matches to smaller cities which certainly attract more crowds than you would ever see at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. That doesn't mean there are no takers for domestic cricket in Bengaluru, but the distance, traffic and matches on weekdays make it difficult for fans to turn up at the stadium. Also, Ranji matches are the only chance for fans in smaller cities to witness some of the internationals in action. .In the last four seasons, however, only three Ranji Trophy matches have been allotted to mofussil centres with all three of them falling in the 2023-24 season. While Hubballi hosted two, Mysuru got the other. Shivamogga had to contend with the CK Nayudu Trophy Trophy early last year and a few women's matches. Even the city-based Maharaja Trophy T20 was held only in Bengaluru the last year though Mysuru and Hubballi have successfully hosted the tournament on multiple occasions previously..Chinnaswamy stampede: Legal action to be taken against RCB, KSCA as Cabinet accepts Justice D'Cunha's report. This year, too, it was going to be restricted to only M Chinnaswamy Stadium but the tragic events of June 4 still casting long and dark shadows over the venue, the city police denied KSCA the permission to host the event. With no choice, the event had to be shifted to Mysuru. .But why not split the matches between Mysuru and Hubballi? And what about the Ranji Trophy matches in the upcoming season? What's the fate of the Women's World Cup matches that Chinnaswamy has been allotted?.DH's attempt to reach out to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat didn't elicit any response. .Karnataka were fortunate to get four Ranji Trophy home matches each in the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons. But the KSCA dispensation held all the matches in Bengaluru..When the former left-arm spinner took over as president in 2022, he had cited paucity of time as the reason for not hosting any game outside of Bengaluru. KSCA did conduct three matches outside of Bengaluru the next season before deciding to have all four matches in the capital the last season..Player-turned-coach Dayanand Shetty rued lack of cricket in the Hubballi region. "We neither get KPL (Maharaja T20), nor Ranji Trophy matches. The stadium (at Rajnagar) sees no activity almost throughout the year. Even the players who have played at the regional level in KSCA recognised leagues aren't allowed to have "nets". I don't understand the point of having a facility and not using it.."We were next only to Bengaluru and Mysuru in terms of performance, but now our teams are losing to even Tumkuru and Ballari sides. We have complained to KSCA officials in Bengaluru about this apathy but no one seems to care," he lamented. .Ranji Trophy and 'A' games are the only top-end fixtures smaller cities get to host, and if they are denied even these contests, then those venues will turn into white elephants, defeating the KSCA's avowed purpose of strengthening the roots of the game beyond the State capital.

‘There's more to life than cricket': Domestic stalwart Priyank Panchal explains early retirement call

Former Gujarat captain and prolific batter Priyank Panchal recently opened up on his decision to retire from all forms of cricket and said, 'there is more to life than cricket.' Panchal, who had led India A in the past and featured in the senior squad, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in May earlier this year. Every cricketer has two careers – the playing & non-playing one. Once I knew I couldn't play for India, it made sense to begin the latter early and get a headstart. Eventually there's more to life than cricket #AMAwithPriyank — Priyank Panchal (@PKpanchal09) August 9, 2025 The domestic veteran played 127 First-Class games and amassed 8,856 runs at 45.18 with 29 centuries and 34 fifties. The 35-year-old also played 97 List A matches, scoring 3,672 runs at 40.80 with eight tons and 21 fifties, while in 59 T20s, he made 1,522 runs at 28.71 with nine half-centuries. Panchal has been a part of the Indian Test team on a couple of occasions, including being called as a replacement for an injured Rohit Sharma. In the home Test series against England in 2021, He was named among the reserve openers alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran. The right-handed opening batter had a breakthrough year in 2016-17 in the Ranji Trophy when he scored 1,310 runs with a highest individual score of 314 not out. It was a season in which Gujarat won the premier domestic competition. Panchal was also a part of the title-winning Gujarat teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16 and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

The Priceless Gift Virat Kohli Gave Mohammed Siraj After His Final Test

A Jersey That Tells a Story Following Kohli's final Test appearance, the batting legend presented Siraj with his match-worn Test jersey, a moment that left the fast bowler deeply touched. Rajat Patidar's SIM mishap gives Chhattisgarh man direct line to Virat Kohli; fans want him to convey, 'Stop his ODI retirement'

In a twist worthy of a drama, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 title-winning captain Rajat Patidar suddenly lost access to his phone number - only to discover it had been reassigned to a young man in Chhattisgarh. What followed was unexpected calls from top cricket stars like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Yash Dayal, stunned reactions on both ends, and a mistaken identity story that spread like wildfire. This also sparked a wave of excitement among fans, who now hope the man can deliver their heartfelt message to Kohli: "Don't retire from ODI cricket." Sim swap mishap Two weeks ago, Manish, a farmer's son from Devbhog district in Chhattisgarh, purchased a SIM card from a local mobile shop in Madgaon. Unbeknownst to him, the freshly activated number once belonged to none other than Rajat Patidar. The cricketer's original SIM had been deactivated for reasons still unclear. The moment Manish installed WhatsApp with help from his friend, the RCB captain's display picture appeared - a clue they dismissed as a quirky software glitch. But soon, calls began flooding in from numbers claiming to belong to Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Yash Dayal. A guy from Chhattisgarh purchased a new sim which turned out to be Rajat Patidar's old number.- He received calls from Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers, but after Patidar informed the Police, the man returned the sim. Prank or reality? Initially, Manish and his friend assumed they were the targets of an elaborate prank. Both being avid cricket fans, they had no idea Kohli or AB de Villiers were actually calling them. They answered with playful banter, jokingly addressing themselves as Rajat Patidar while unknowingly chatting with cricket's biggest names. Rajat Patidar steps in The lighthearted confusion reached its peak on July 15 when Rajat Patidar himself called the hijacked number, politely asking for his SIM back. Manish, still convinced it was a prank, responded cheekily: "I am Dhoni speaking." That's when Rajat dropped the bombshell - he had filed a police complaint. Within 10 minutes, officers from the local station arrived, and the matter quickly shifted from amusing to serious. The SIM was handed back to its rightful owner with assistance from the MP Cyber Cell and Gariaband police. Fans hope he could ask Virat Kohli to stay in ODI cricket As the news went viral, fans flooded social media with memes, jokes, and hopeful pleas, wishing Manish had told Virat Kohli not to retire from ODI cricket - especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Kohli bhai ko kehna ODI se retirement na le . 😭 Kohli ko bolna tha na bhai retirement naa lene ko😭🙏 Ye Bhai Dream 11 pe team banayega toh 3 crore jeet jayega 😂😂 what the luck is this 🤣 Now this boy will get famous as he got call from Virat Kohli. Call record kiya to acha tha How lucky is this guy 😅.He accidentally got the phone number belonging to Rajat Patidar and coincidentally he got a call from AB and Virat Kohli. Mother of all coincidences.😅😅 Even though it began with a simple SIM swap, the two men now have a story they can tell for years - the day they accidentally took Rajat Patidar's number and ended up speaking to cricket legends.
