Sibisi? Xoki? Ndah?: Captaincy question lingers at Orlando Pirates
Following the departure of regular captain Innocent Maela, the club has not yet announced a new official skipper.
Last season, Nkosinathi Sibisi captained most matches and is a strong contender to take on the role permanently. The experienced defender has stepped up in the absence of Olisah Ndah, Tapelo Xoki, and Maela.
With new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou set to lead his first official match, it remains uncertain who he will choose as captain of Orlando Pirates.
Here are the options for the captaincy:
1. Olisah Ndah
When fit, Ndah has proven to be a calming presence in defence and has saved the Buccaneers on several occasions. However, he hasn't played in over a year, and his fitness remains a concern.
2. Tapelo Xoki
Although not a favourite among some Pirates fans, the 30-year-old has served the club with dignity over the past three years. His commanding presence and leadership on the pitch have often been praised, which is why Jose Riveiro entrusted him with the captaincy for two seasons.
3. Mbekezile Mbokazi
The 19-year-old was given the captain's armband during some pre-season matches, indicating that Ouaddou may see potential leadership qualities in him. While it is unlikely he will be named the new captain, expect him to wear the armband in matches that do not feature Ndah or Sibisi.
According to Soccer Laduma , Sibisi is in pole position for the Orlando Pirates captaincy.
'Sibisi is the logical choice to take over permanently, but it might not be a straightforward appointment,' a source told the publication. 'The coaches are also looking at Ndah and Xoki as part of a leadership group, and it could change depending on who's playing and available. It's a long season, and they need flexibility.

Springbok steps away from rugby due to health concerns
Springbok Women flanker and Bulls Daisies captain Lusanda Dumke is stepping away from rugby due to health concerns. The 28-year-old loose forward, who earned 33 Test caps and captained the Springbok Women on three occasions, led the Isuzu Bulls Daisies to their third consecutive Women's Premier Division title in 2025. Springbok Women performance coach Swys de Bruin acknowledged Dumke's importance to the national setup and expressed full support for her decision. 'Lusanda has been pivotal for us, but we now wish her the best as she battles her medical condition,' said De Bruin. 'Her absence will have an impact, but at the same time, the players going to the Rugby World Cup will know that playing for your country while you are fit and strong is indeed a privilege.' Dumke is a previous winner of the SA Rugby Women's Player of the Year award, and her leadership and resilience left a lasting mark on both the Bok Women and the Isuzu Bulls Daisies. Thando Manana, executive for women's rugby and strategic projects at the Blue Bulls Company, said: 'Lusanda has been more than just a captain, she's been the heartbeat of the Isuzu Bulls Daisies. Her leadership, humility, and relentless drive have shaped the culture of this team. 'While we respect her decision to step away for health reasons, her legacy will continue to inspire every player who wears this jersey. We stand firmly behind her and wish her strength and healing in the journey ahead.' Dumke has requested that her privacy be respected in this matter and no further comment will be made. 'Nkota is already a better player after leaving Pirates' TWO more players leave the club Orlando Stadium is the venue as Pirates and Sekhukhune do battle on Saturday, 9 August at 17:30. The Sea Robbers have a new skipper too. 29-year-old Nkosinathi Sibisi will wear the captain's armband at Pirates in 2025-2026. He was a key figure last season alongside breakout star Mbekezeli Mbokazi in the heart of defence after Thabiso Sesane was struck down with a long-term injury. What happens when Sesane returns will be fascinating, as he might even dislodge the new captain. That's a nice problem for new boss Ouaddao to have, though. Sibisi made 42 appearances last season across all competitions, including 25 in the league. Saleng paints a grim picture of his Orlando Pirates future Sibisi, Sesane and Maswanganyi ponder things at a set piece. Khoza applauds his sons for Orlando Pirates' Amstel deal
Orlando Pirates chair Irvin 'Iron Duke' Khoza says the club's sponsorship deal with Amstel was based on the experience and strong brand legacies of the two entities. Pirates announced the beer brand as their new sponsor at a whirlwind ceremony of glitz and glamour at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday. A-listers of the music industry Sjava and Bucie entertained the audience that included several Pirates legends including Edward 'Magents' Motale and Happy Jele. When your favourite artist (Sjava), your favourite Beer (Amstel) and your favourite soccer team (Orlando Pirates) come together 🤟🏾🤟🏾🤌🏽🤌🏽🙏🏽 — ✞ ARCHBISHOP ✞ (@KingBishop1st) August 6, 2025 Khoza congratulated his sons Mpumi and Nkosana for brokering the deal with the Dutch brewery giant. The club's previous beer sponsor was Carling Black Label. 'There are two elements we share with Amstel. The first is providing experience and the second is maintaining legacies. 'Amstel, I can tell you, this club is strong on loyalty. If you look at our sponsorships, they've gone past 30 years — with Adidas, Vodacom, we've been together for 30 years. When you see @Lawrence_Maleka on the mic, you already know it's premium vibes! 🔥 The perfect host for the Amstel x Orlando Pirates celebration. — Rorisang Masina (@Rorisangmasina_) August 6, 2025 'Without history, tradition and culture you can't be a brand. This brand has stood the test of time and that's why it's important for us to share the platform with a team born in 1870 — that's Amstel — because they are also strong on legacy and experience.' Heineken Beverages marketing director Andrea Quaye said Amstel opted to associate itself with Pirates because it 'shares similar values' with the Soweto giants. They hope the partnership will run beyond the initial three years. 'We value the same things and we believe valuing the same things will allow us to have a long-term relationship,' Quaye said. 'This partnership is an important step for us into local football. Beer and football have the same role in society, which is about connecting people and it's also about creating experiences and bringing joy and happiness to people.'
