New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Batting for concerted action to tackle air pollution, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has called on the Central government and states to work together, alongside experts, industry, civil society and citizens, to align efforts and implement scalable solutions — from clean transport to cleaner fuels.
Hosted by Tharoor and convened by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and AirQualityAsia (AQA), the dialogue was the seventh such roundtable since 2017 that brings together India's leading air quality experts, policymakers, health professionals, and civil society actors to deliberate on scalable, cross-sectoral solutions to reduce air pollution and improve public health across cities, towns, and villages.
Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, said in his inaugural address that clean air is a national imperative that needed to be addressed.
'Platforms like this bring together sharper minds and practical ideas that can help us in the government in taking tangible steps forward. I look forward to the insights from today's discussion contributing to initiatives like the National Clean Air Programme and beyond,' he said.
In his opening address, Tharoor said the evidence is stark as nearly 70 per cent of our population — around 980 million people — are breathing air that fails to meet even 'our own national standards' (as of 2023).
'Delhi may have recorded its cleanest July in a decade, but just last winter, it suffered its worst air quality in four years. The Central government and states must work together, alongside experts,industry, civil society, and citizens, to align our efforts and implement scalable solutions — from clean transport to cleaner fuels,' Tharoor said.
'If we can sustain this momentum, we can turn the aspiration for clean air into a lasting reality,' he added.
The roundtable brought together MPs representing diverse states, including Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena-UBT), Sudhanshu Trivedi (BJP) Sasmit Patra (BJD), Vivek Tankha (Congress), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), P P Chaudhary (BJP) and Naveen Jindal (BJP), among others.
Arunabha Ghosh, founder-CEO of CEEW and member, Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), said, 'Air pollution is a liability, but clean air is an economic asset. It improves worker productivity, educational outcomes, talent attraction to our cities, and even foreign investment.' 'The more we see clean air as an economic driver — not just an environmental goal — the faster we can bring in the full force of government, industry, and civil society. This isn't just about regulators or ministries — it's about all of us.
'We must bridge the gap between being economic agents by day and citizens by night. Clean air must become a shared, national priority,' Ghosh said.
Soumya Swaminathan, chairperson of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, said air pollution is the number one health risk in India today — linked not just to asthma and lung disease but also to diabetes, heart attacks, dementia, and poor brain development in children.
'The health ministry faces the consequences, but the responsibility lies across all ministries. Clean air must be seen not as a cost but as a public good and an investment in the health of current and future generations,' she said.
The dialogue proposed coordinated actions such as establishing a council of state environment ministers to drive inter-state collaboration and strengthen environmental federalism. PTI ASK ARI

Punjab: Khaira's ex-PSO arrested in drug case from Delhi airport
Punjab Police on Saturday arrested a former personal security officer (PSO) of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira from Indira Gandhi International Airport in connection with a drug case registered in 2015 in which Khaira was also nominated. An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with Punjab Police, Joga Singh had been absconding since being nominated as an accused on September 28, 2023. His bail plea was rejected by the sessions court in Fazilka in October 2023 and then by the high court in January 2024, but he remained at large. Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira Joga Singh was detained by immigration authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi while attempting to flee to Australia due to a look-out circular (LoC) issued by the special investigation team (SIT) in November 2023. He was taken on transit remand and produced before a court in Jalalabad, which granted police his five-day remand. The case The case was first registered in March 2015 by the Fazilka police after 2-kg heroin, 24 gold biscuits, pistols, Pakistani SIM cards and a mobile phone besides a firearm were seized and nine people—including Gurdev Singh, an alleged close aide of Khaira—were arrested. 'The Supreme Court, in its order dated April 10, 2024, stayed all proceedings related to the NDPS case involving me until the next hearing. The court, presided over by Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, had directed the state not to proceed further with the trial before the trial court. This stay order dismantles any narrative suggesting ongoing culpability or urgency in the case,' said Khaira. 'The legal battle surrounding this case has a complex history in which the Punjab and Haryana high court granted me bail on January 4, 2024, with Justice Anoop Chitkara recording a prima facie satisfaction that I was not guilty. The Supreme Court, on January 18, 2024, upheld the bail decision, rejecting an appeal by the Punjab government and AAP, further reinforcing the lack of substantive evidence against me,' said Khaira. He said the 'smear' campaign appears to be a continuation of 'political vendetta'. 'The timing of Joga Singh's arrest at Delhi airport, as reported on August 9, and the subsequent amplification of false narratives suggest a coordinated effort to deflect attention from governance issues,' he said.

AAP slams ‘mismanagement by 4-engine BJP govt' over deaths, water crisis in Delhi amid heavy rain
With heavy rain lashing the Capital on Saturday, deaths of eight persons in two separate incidents, flooding of the Giri Nagar pumping station in South Delhi's Kalkaji halting water supply to several areas, and waterlogging in multiple parts of the city brought the BJP government under criticism from the AAP. 'Mismanagement by the four-engine BJP govt has not only submerged Delhi roads, but caused a water crisis in Kalkaji. The Giri Nagar pumping station is completely submerged. And the people of Giri Nagar, Kalkaji, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extn are facing several days of water crisis,' she posted on X, along with a copy of her letter to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In her letter, Atishi wrote, 'Just a few hours of rain have brought Delhi to a grinding halt. Roads are waterlogged, traffic is at a standstill and even more shocking is that in many parts of Delhi water has entered people's homes. The pumping station of the Giri Nagar UnderGround Reservoir (UGR) is fully submerged in water… So no water is being supplied to the Kalkaji, Giri Nagar, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension.' She called the situation 'the direct result of administrative negligence' and urged the Chief Minister to instruct PWD and Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh to restore supply immediately. The heavy rain that caused the flooding began late Friday night, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgrading alerts through the early hours of Saturday from yellow to orange and then to a red alert by 6.20 am. By 8.30 am, Safdarjung recorded 78.7 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, while Pragati Maidan logged 100.3 mm. The IMD warned of potential waterlogging, traffic congestion, and reduced visibility across the city. Atishi also posted videos of waterlogged roads in Palam, Dhaula Kuan and Saket, stating, 'On Raksha Bandhan, the entire city is submerged… The collapse of governance under Rekha Gupta's government is preventing brothers from meeting their sisters.' AAP MLAs Sanjeev Jha and Kuldeep Kumar, also questioned the government's claims of monsoon preparedness and blamed the BJP to be responsible for lapses in civic bodies.

He said a climate of fear prevailed in the state, and people felt scared and anxious. During his speech, Warring reiterated his party's strong opposition to the AAP government's land pooling policy. He said on the one hand, it was a scheme to loot farmers' land and on the other hand, it had the potential to destroy the state's agricultural economy. He made it clear that the Congress party will never allow this policy to be implemented.
