Dick Van Dyke, 99, makes rare comment on 46-year age gap with wife Arlene Silver
'We get along so well,' the Mary Poppins star, 99, told People on Sunday at the couple's Vandy Camp fundraiser in Malibu, California. 'Everybody said it wouldn't work.'
Silver, 53, added, 'We just care about each other so much,' explaining that it's 'eerie how well [the marriage] works.'
'People the same age don't last,' Silver joked, reports Page Six.
The Disney icon sweetly recalled first meeting the makeup artist during the SAG Awards in 2006.
'I never said hello to a strange girl in my life,' he confessed. 'I was too scared. But I was at a show backstage and she walked by, and for some reason, I just jumped up and said, 'Hi, I'm Dick.' There's something about her [that] got me, and I was right.'
After their initial meeting, Van Dyke hired Silver as a makeup artist for subsequent projects, but they didn't start dating until years later.
The couple also agreed that they empower one another, with Silver sharing that Van Dyke 'made me feel like I can do anything.'
'And you can,' Van Dyke replied.
The pair tied the knot in 2012 when the comedian was 86 and Silver was 40.
Van Dyke, who narrowly escaped the expansive fires in Los Angeles in January, once said he didn't even realise Silver was decades younger when he first approach her.
'I had no idea she was half my age,' he told Entertainment Tonight in 2024. 'Beautiful.'
'I was fortunate that I didn't grow up,' he added in part. 'We were meant to be.'
The Dick Van Dyke Show star was previously married to Margie Willett from 1948 to 1984.
The former couple share four grown children: Christian, 74, Barry, 73, Stacy, 69, and Carrie Beth, 63.

Gal Gadot blames 'pressure' for stars to speak about Israel for Snow White flopping
Gal Gadot believes the 'pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel' caused Snow White to flop. The 40-year-old actress - who served in the Israeli Defense Forces for two years as part of her mandatory conscription - played the Evil Queen in Disney's live-action fairytale and she expected the film to be a "huge success", only for it to perform poorly at the global box office, generating a loss of more than $115 million. And Gal has now suggested one reasons audiences were put off the film - which featured Rachel Zegler, a vocal supporter of Palestine and Gaza - because of the current political climate. Speaking on Israeli TV show The A Talks, the Jerusalem Post reports she said in Hebrew: 'First of all, I have to say that I really enjoyed filming this movie. 'I even enjoyed working with Rachel Zegler. We laughed, we talked and it was fun. I was sure that this movie was going to be a huge success. 'And then October 7 happened, and what's happening in all kinds of industries, and also in Hollywood, is that there's a lot of pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel. "I can always explain and try to give people in the world context about what's happening and what the reality is here, but in the end, people decide for themselves. I was disappointed that the movie was greatly affected by that and didn't do well at the box office.' The former Miss Israel previously admitted she had found playing the Evil Queen "delicious" because she doesn't often get asked to play the villain. She told Variety: "It was different than anything that I've ever done because I was playing the villain. She's so theatrical and so grand and bigger than life … it was a delicious role to play." Gal - who is best known for playing the lead in the Wonder Woman film franchise - loved the experience of getting to grips with a new character. The Hollywood star shared: "That's the fun part about what we do. To dig in to create all the history for the character and to understand how they operate - what triggers them, what they love, what scares them - it's something that takes you through a journey when you play a character. And I love it."

‘Stand up': Star's proposal to boyfriend divides
Former Disney Star Bella Thorne has sparked debate by proposing to her British boyfriend, producer Mark Emms... who she is already engaged to. The 27-year-old, who rose to prominence as a child actor on the Disney television show Shake It Up and in movies like Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's Blended, has just gotten down on one knee and asked her boyfriend to marry her. The romantic gesture isn't just surprising in the fact that she's forgone the tradition of the man proposing and popped the question herself, but it is also slightly random, because the pair are already engaged - and have been since 2024. Ms Thorne didn't offer much explanation but posted a clip of her proposing on social media to her millions of followers. '3 years ago we met, 1 year later he proposed, now year 1 later, so did I,' she wrote. There is some music over the top of the video, so you can't hear Mr Emms' response, but he clearly said yes. The 45-year-old even covered his mouth with his hand in shock before dropping to his knees and joining the former Disney star on the ground. It was quite the romantic scene but the proposal really baffled people online. While some commented on how 'sweet' it was and gushed over the couple, many didn't like the idea of a woman proposing to a man. 'Girl stand up. I'm saying this with love,' one advised. 'If he had already proposed. Why did you do it? I'm confused,' another said. 'Okay ladies. Let's not normalise this okay?' One wrote. 'Girl you cannot be serious,' someone else said 'Get up,' someone instructed. One social media user commented that you 'don't ever propose to a man,' another countered, that argument saying everyone should leave Ms Thorne alone and 'let her cook' and propose to her boyfriend. The lovebirds originally got engaged after just nine months of dating. Emms, 45, works behind the scenes as a producer, and owns a bar in New York City and the pair met at model Cara Delevingne's birthday party. Ms Thorne has previously shared on social media that the two have been 'through every emotion together and I love them all equally' and she has told People that the pair have even seen a therapist before marriage. 'We're still really learning each other's traits, and trying to get them right before we get married,' she said. She added that the wedding planning is 'going great' and said it has been a 'wow' experience to find her partner. 'Every day we kind of draw closer. It's really like, 'Oh wow, we're really, and you're my partner.' Let's do this together,' she said. 'So that kind of becomes more real every day and kind of solidifies our partnership more and more every day.'

Scott Wolf breaks silence on divorce from estranged wife Kelley Wolf
Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Scott Wolf is accusing his estranged wife, Kelley Wolf, of conspiring to make 'disturbing, false' claims about him amid their messy divorce battle. The Party of Five star broke his silence on his split from the former Real World star, saying his ex conspired a plan to accuse him of 'psychological abuse, child abuse, child endangerment, stealing with passports.' While he previously chose to keep this 'difficult' time in his family's lives 'private,' he told People in a statement published on Saturday that he's now speaking up to protect 'the well being of (his) children.' Scott Wolf broke his silence on his contentious divorce from Kelley Wolf, accusing her of conspiring to make false allegations against him. Picture:'I am now choosing to come forward and share that she has described to me her plans to 'make claims' about me, although she also admitted, 'I do not believe they're true,' in order to gain an advantage in what she sees as a 'battle' in court, and in the court of public opinion,' Wolf said. 'In order to protect my kids, I am providing the text messages she sent to me where she describes this plan, so there are no questions about her intentions, or the malicious intent behind her false allegations made and/or planned for the future.' The outlet went on to report that Kelley, 48, alleged in the messages that she 'was advised to make claims that are possible, even though I do not believe they're true nor would I ever say them to anyone'. In a statement, the actor alleged Kelley told him her plans to 'gain an advantage in what she sees as a 'battle' in court'. 'When you accused me of all the things you put in the restraining order, you made me into a villain. The only way I can fight back is to produce claims that are either the same as yours or greater,' she continued. She also detailed that her aim was to 'create more urgency to get the kids back. Or at least get back joint custody'. Kelley ultimately shared her allegations against Wolf on a phone call with police on June 26, according to the outlet. 'Although her claims are completely baseless and incredibly dangerous, the worst part is that they are traumatic for our children,' the 57-year-old continued in his message. In text messages, Kelley alleged she 'was advised to make claims that are possible, even though I do not believe they're true'. 'I hope that anyone who might speak publicly or report on such things, will consider this before spreading any further information from a clearly unreliable and completely compromised source.' He closed, asking for 'privacy and respect for our family' and thanked 'all those who have shown their love and support'. A representative for Kelley did not immediately respond to Page Six's request for comment. As some may recall, Kelley was shockingly detained and hospitalised after police were called to the Wolf family's Park City, Utah, home in June after a reported 'family fight'. An audio recording of the 911 call showed an unidentified woman claiming she was 'terrified' and 'needed help' after getting into an altercation with her brother-in-law and 16-year-old son. Wolf with his Party of Five cast mates Neve Campbell, Matthew Fox and Lacey Chabert. At the time, someone at the scene also mentioned an alleged 'past-occurred assault' choking incident that purportedly took place at their home in March. The scene transpired shortly after Scott filed for divorce on June 10. After his filing, Kelley later made another bombshell claim on social media that she was 'held against her will' by her former friends while she was 'trying to file for divorce.' Later that month, Scott was granted sole custody of their three children — Jackson, 16, Miller, 12, and Lucy, 11 — and a temporary restraining order against his estranged wife which he later dropped after they reached a new temporary agreement detailing custody, finances and communication.
