Hollywood loves quake disaster flicks, but do we know what the real ‘Big One' will look like?

If you live in Southern California, there is an ever-present fear about the inevitable 'Big One,' the quake that seismologists say is coming, it's just a matter of time.
And Hollywood has no problem reminding us of this existential threat:
There was the ominous NBC miniseries in 1990, dubbed 'The Big One: The Great Los Angeles Earthquake,' that raked in the ratings and the 2015 action flick San Andreas, plus the Universal Studios Hollywood's 'Big One' earthquake ride (based on a San Francisco quake) that paints a violent and thrilling end.
But we don't need Hollywood to remind us.
Many suffered through real damaging earthquakes that weren't quite 'The Big One': 1987 Whittier Narrows (5.9), 1992 Landers (7.3), 1994 Northridge (6.7) and the 1999 Hector Mine (7.1), to name a few.
The memory of those quakes, however, nor the imagination of Hollywood will probably match the 'Big One' when it finally hits, according to my colleague Rong-Gong Lin II who wrote about this recently.
So, what can we expect when California's next mega-earthquake strikes along the San Andreas fault?
That's the implication of a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a peer reviewed journal. The report, co-authored by scientists at Caltech in Pasadena, studied a massive earthquake that struck the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar on March 28 — along a fault known for being eerily similar to California's San Andreas.
The earthquake ended up rupturing a much longer section of the fault than scientists expected, given the seismology of the region.
The implications of this study are that 'earthquakes never come back exactly the same way,' Solene L. Antoine, a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech and the study's lead author, said in an interview.
March's Mandalay earthquake devastated Myanmar, killing at least 3,791 people and an additional 63 people in Thailand.
High-rise buildings were damaged as far away as Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam along with homes in the Ruili area of China. Damage was estimated at $1.9 billion, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
It was the most powerful earthquake in Myanmar in at least 79 years.
What's clear from the study is that while California's next 'Big One' may share some characteristics of previously documented devastating quakes, it's unlikely to be an exact replay. As the recent experience in Myanmar shows, even well-documented faults can behave in surprising ways.
Maybe the San Andreas fault will rupture in smaller, separate earthquakes, said Jean-Philippe Avouac, a co-author of the study and a professor of geology and mechanical and civil engineering at Caltech.
Or it could be a much larger earthquake — rupturing the fault not just from Monterey to Los Angeles counties, but perhaps all the way east into San Bernardino, Riverside and Imperial counties. Such a quake would possibly exceed magnitude 8 and rank as the largest simultaneous disaster in modern California history, with huge swaths of the state racked by powerful seismic shaking all at once.
Modeling previous activity on the San Andreas fault will offer a glimpse into the wide range of possible outcomes, but it will not pinpoint precisely when the next great quake will strike.
'We can't just expect the exact same thing to happen,' Antoine said. 'It is a matter of just showing what scenarios are possible, the diversity of scenarios and seeing what are the consequences of each of those scenarios.'
And that means Hollywood has plenty of fodder for more disaster films.

NASA's Perseverance rover stationed on Mars spotted a dome-shaped rock with a striking resemblance to a helmet used during medieval times. The martian rock, captured by Perseverance's primary camera on Aug. 5, is pointed at the top and dome-shaped on top of a flared brim. 'This rock's target name is Horneflya and it's distinctive less because of its hat shape (which looks to me to be generally consistent with the pyramid shape we often see in of wind-eroded float blocks on the surface of Mars) and more because it's made almost entirely of spherules,' David Agle, a spokesperson for the Perseverance team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told 3 Perseverance launched in July 2020. Perseverance's primary mission, though, isn't to collect baubles. The rover was launched on July 30, 2020 to search for ancient microbial life on the Red Planet to aid scientists in studying its habitability. Its research will help scientists get closer to sending a person to Mars as NASA inches ever closer to its final goal in the Artemis program, which seeks to establish a permanent base on the Moon to oversee the first astronaut landing on the Red Planet. If so, signs of their remains might be found in lakebed or shoreline sediments,' NASA says on the home page for the mission. NASA currently has four other rovers on Mars. Sojourner, the oldest and most antiquated of the five, landed on Mars in July 1997, according to NASA. The second-eldest rover, Opportunity, was originally built to last just three months on Mars. Instead, it pressed on for a staggering 15 years before shutting down in 2019.

I've always been drawn to shows that explore time travel in a unique way. There's something thrilling about following a character as they navigate someone else's life, piecing together moments that could change everything. And the 2022 revival of 'Quantum Leap' proves that when handled with imagination, this concept makes for compulsively watchable TV. The series first aired on NBC in 2022, introducing a brilliant physicist who unexpectedly begins leaping into other people's lives across the recent past. Alongside a dedicated team, he must navigate each new host's circumstances, making critical choices that allow him to eventually return to his own timeline. Although NBC canceled the show after two seasons, Netflix has now has picked up both seasons of the show, giving subscribers a chance to binge the full adventure in one place. That's 31 episodes total, packed with intriguing leaps, memorable characters, and plenty of unexpected twists that will keep you guessing until the end. If you're looking for your next Netflix binge, 'Quantum Leap' makes a strong case for itself. Here's everything you need to know about this revival and why it's worth adding to your watchlist. 'Quantum Leap' serves as a continuation of the original 1989–1993 show. Set nearly three decades after Dr. Sam Beckett's disappearance into the Quantum Leap accelerator, the series introduces Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee), a physicist leading a new team tasked with reviving the time-travel project. The team includes Addison Augustine (Caitlin Bassett), Ben's fiancée and a decorated Army veteran who appears as a holographic guide; Herbert 'Magic' Williams (Ernie Hudson), a career military officer overseeing the operation; Ian Wright (Mason Alexander Park), the AI specialist managing the project's artificial intelligence system; and Jenn Chou (Nanrisa Lee), who handles digital security. The narrative unfolds when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, awakening in a different person's body with fragmented memories. Guided by Addison, who communicates with him as a hologram, Ben discovers that the only way to return to his original timeline is by correcting a pivotal event in the life of his current host. The concept of 'leaping' itself remains the standout element of this revival, as it continually places Ben in unexpected situations that test him in new ways. What stands out even more is the decision to make Addison (who serves as the helpful holographic guide), not just a team member but also Ben's fiancée. He just can't remember her. This twist adds a deeper emotional layer to their exchanges and makes it clear that the series isn't attempting to replicate the central bond from the earlier show. 'Quantum Leap' does occasionally drift into corny moments, but the strong performances from the main cast keep it grounded. And honestly, a touch of lighthearted silliness now and then only adds to the fun. Even though the first season of 'Quantum Leap' has an average rating of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, it remains compelling to watch. This sci-fi series is easy to binge and doesn't demand too much mental effort, making it genuinely fun. It's a shame the show was canceled though, but if it finds success on Netflix, there's a chance it could be revived. That's a huge maybe. I'm fairly confident 'Quantum Leap' will jump into Netflix's top 10, considering there's 2 seasons available and 31 episodes to stream.
