Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, sporting unique coloring and personalities, but one recent social-media post quickly captured the attention of internet users after an owner showed off her dog's unusually long tail.
Reddit user u/juleslizard shared the post to the subreddit channel r/WhatsWrongWithYourDog with photos of her rescue dog, who came from an animal shelter in Mississippi. She was told that her canine is a Great Dane mix; she believes he has some German shepherd somewhere in his makeup due to his fur.
But what stands out to the owner, and the thousands on Reddit who saw the photos, is the canine's unusually long tail. The July 15 post joked that the animal's "DNA forgot to turn off" the part for tail growth.
The dog's tail is about the length of his entire body. One picture shows him standing in the shower with his tail down, barely above the tiled floor. It is hard to get a spot on the couch with him, as his tail stretches out across an entire cushion. The owner said it will grow longer as her pet is still a pup; the animal shelter said he recently turned 1 in April.

Many viewers advised the owner to count the vertebrae on the tail and she said there were 21, but she is not a professional and went only by the feel of each one, she told Newsweek via Reddit messaging.
A dog's tail is an extension of the spine, containing multiple bones. Canines can have anywhere between five and 23 vertebrae, with an average number of 20. This tally varies with different dog breeds.
The owner wrote in a comment on the post: "Based on his gigantic clown shoes, we think he's still going to get bigger, certainly heavier. The vet said he is underweight and 'in his gangly teenager stages.'"
And despite many thinking his long tail gets in the way, the owner added that it is the "most graceful part," although there have been a few spilled drinks here and there.
The vet's only comment on the Great Dane mix's unusually long tail was that it matches his outsize paws.
Viewer Reactions
As of Thursday, the Reddit post reached over 17,000 upvotes and more than 275 comments, with viewers flocking to the comment section in awe.
"Dude is half kangaroo," posted one person, while another added: "That's a whip!"
A third user commented: "That isn't a tail, that's a rudder. Bet he's one hell of a swimmer."
One comment read: "He looks like a massive kangaroo mouse! I've never seen such a long tail on a dog. He's really adorable."

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Ahead of this weekend's massive two-night SummerSlam event, WWE has officially concluded its countdown of the 25 greatest matches in the history of the show. The iconic Intercontinental Championship match between Bret "The Hitman" Hart and "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith from 1992 has claimed the coveted top spot. The countdown has been playing out on WWE's digital platforms over the past several weeks. The final reveal celebrates a bout that is widely considered to be one of the greatest matches in company history. The Greatest SummerSlam Match Ever The main event of SummerSlam 1992 was a masterclass in storytelling, held in front of over 80,000 passionate fans at London's Wembley Stadium. The match was for the Intercontinental Championship, marking one of the rare times the title headlined a major pay-per-view. The storyline was deeply personal, as it pitted two brothers-in-law against each other, with Bret's sister and Bulldog's wife, Diana Hart, torn between them at ringside. In a legendary performance, Bret Hart carried an exhausted British Bulldog through a 25-minute technical classic, culminating in Bulldog winning the title in his home country in an incredibly emotional moment. Rounding Out The Top Five The rest of the top five is a showcase of legendary encounters from different eras. The number two spot went to the 2016 dream match between John Cena and AJ Styles, a bout that saw Styles score a clean, star-making victory over the face of the company. You can see how the fans reacted below: As soon as I they started this countdown I knew this would be number 1 & fair play because it's an iconic match. Would it be my number 1? I'm not entirely sure what my number 1 would be but as I say an iconic match held in the UK which is special. — Daniel(SDMN) (@TheYOLOArtist) July 30, 2025 Is 2002 the only year to have back to back matches on the list? — Markin' Out (@MarkinOut) July 30, 2025 Not mad at it. Good graps — JA (@ReceiptTalk) July 30, 2025 Bret Hart is the greatest in-ring storyteller in wrestling history. It's really not even close. Out of respect, the next two spots should be left empty. — BizarroBabyface (@BizarroBabyface) July 30, 2025 That was storytelling magic. Well deserved. — Mikey! (@MegaMikey81) July 30, 2025 It shouldn't be the greatest match ever... It doesn't worth to be in the no 1 greatest match ever — Enzorealestfan💙🇦🇷 (@IfeoluwaAj11) July 30, 2025 I had a feeling it would be this one. The crowd in Wembley. The family infighting. First time an IC title Main Evented a PPV. I'm still of the opinion Brett vs. Perfect is the better wrestling match, but I can definitely understand the spectacle nature of this match. — Jorge Edwards (@JorgeBEdwards) July 30, 2025 More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports

A senior Labrador retriever named Athena has captured hearts among social-media users with a unique mealtime routine that is as adorable as it is unusual. In a viral TikTok video, shared in July by user @ the pup is filmed enjoying her breakfast in a quiet corner of the kitchen like most other pups do, but what has caught internet viewers' attention is what she does while eating. After every single bite of her kibble, Athena lifts her head up to look at her owner and then wiggles her tail at her, as if trying to communicate how grateful she is. "After every bite, she looks at me and wags her tail," the poster says in the clip. "Have you ever seen a dog do this before? I honestly believe she is saying 'thank you for my breakfast mum!' It melts my heart to the core!!" she adds in the caption. The clip quickly went viral on social media, receiving over 252,400 views and more than 45,400 likes on the platform, and most users believed this was the pup's way to express how grateful she is for everything she ha. One user, Lily, commented: "She's a thankful old baby." Carmilla posted: "I got everything I've ever wanted! Mum and food! I'm such a lucky dog!" Dogs know how to show us love and make us feel special, but are they also aware that we love them back? What is the best way to show them love? In a previous article, Newsweek explained that, while dogs and cats show love through behaviors like tail wags or following their humans around, pet owners can express affection in meaningful, nonverbal ways. Spending quality time together is key; playing, walking, training, cuddling, or even exercising together strengthens the bond. Paying attention and providing companionship are what pets value most. Physical gestures such as hugs and kisses may be appreciated by some dogs, but most cats dislike them. Ultimately, the best way to show your pet you love them is to keep them happy and healthy, with regular vet visits and vaccinations, and by providing high-quality, species-appropriate food. In an Instagram reel, what started as a serene cuddle session between a dog and its owner quickly became a funny surprise, leaving viewers both laughing and tearing up at the canine's bewildered reaction. Since the clip was posted, it has received over 577,000 likes. The video shows a dog's head peacefully resting on its owner's pregnant belly. "Just vibing … until the baby kicks," the owner captioned the video. Suddenly, the baby delivers what seems to be a distinct kick, causing the dog's eyes to come open in confusion. The dog's startled reaction delighted Instagram users, who filled the comments with interpretations of the scene. "'Not to panic anyone BUT THERE ARE MOVEMENTS! EVERYBODY STAY CALM!'" one person imagined the dog's inner dialogue, while another wrote: "'Your stomach just kicked me in the face.'" Others shared their own pets' responses to fetal movements. "My dog just laid there unfazed getting kicked upside the head," one person posted. "My dog doesn't react when his head bounces … I think he thinks I'm just fat and trying to breathe," another shared. Stock image: A small dog touches its owner's pregnant belly. Stock image: A small dog touches its owner's pregnant Dogs Sense Pregnancy? The dog's evident surprise raises questions about how much animals truly understand about pregnancy. The American Kennel Club (AKC) explored this phenomenon in a blog post, highlighting dogs' incredible sense of smell. "One of the amazing things about dogs is their noses. They have the ability to detect and remember scents, long after they're exposed to the original odor," the post said. When a person is pregnant, hormonal shifts can alter their scent—leading many to believe dogs can detect changes even before humans do. "I suspect that dogs can smell something we cannot," Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, senior veterinarian and director of pet health information at the Animal Medical Center of New York City, said, as quoted by the AKC. Hohenhaus added that dogs possess "60 times as many smell receptors as humans, and 40 times as much brain power dedicated to smell." These advanced capabilities allow canines to pick up on subtle "chemical changes" in the body, which can include those related to pregnancy. While they likely can't understand the reason for the changes, they do understand something is different. Dr. Rachel Barrack, doctor of veterinary medicine and owner of Animal Acupuncture in New York City, suggested to the AKC that dogs are smart enough not only to pick up on these changes in a chemical and physical way, but also in an emotional way based on your moods and feelings.
