Oblivion remaster mod support is only a matter of time as fans get to work
Along with janky launches and comical bugs, Bethesda's role-playing games are synonymous with thriving mod communities.
This is certainly the case with The Elder Scrolls series, where mods for Oblivion and Skyrim have provided widespread improvements or comical goofs through exaggerated ragdoll physics and AI-driven text speech.
Bethesda usually encourages the modding scene by providing official tools to players, also known as Creation Kits, for the likes of Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, but it seems like this won't happen for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.
In a FAQ page on Bethesda's website, it reads: 'Mods are not supported for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.'
However, the sentence below this appears to suggest otherwise: 'If you experiencing gameplay issues while playing with mods, it's recommended you first try uninstalling your mods, then verify your games files on Steam, or the Xbox App.'
While this might mean mods are off the table for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 players, it seems the situation is more open to interpretation on PC.
In fact, players on Reddit have already discovered the remaster's files can be opened in the construction kit for the original Oblivion.
While it seems like old mods for Oblivion may still need some work to function in the remaster (based on this thread), in order to make it compatible with Unreal Engine 5 assets, this functionality with the original construction kit will certainly speed things up.
Whether this was intentional or not is unclear, but Bethesda has already shown some generosity to a group of modders who are working on their own revamped version of Oblivion using the engine of its sequel, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
In a post on X, the team behind upcoming mod Skyblivion revealed that Bethesda provided them with game keys for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered for free.
'Huge thanks to our friends @BethesdaStudios for their continued support of Skyblivion! As massive fans, we're beyond grateful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! This means so much to us. Thank you for everything, Bethesda.'
In a follow-up post, the team stated that Bethesda 'made it clear that they have no intention of shutting down' the Skyblivion project, which is set to be released later this year. More Trending
The team behind Skyblivion released a statement last week, after Bethesda announced the remaster, where they emphasised how there's 'no need for comparisons or a sense of competition' between the two projects.
'As a PC mod, a console release is impossible for us, so the remaster presents a wonderful opportunity for console players to re-experience Oblivion, something our project could never directly provide,' the team wrote.
They added: 'We see this not as a conflict, but as a fantastic opportunity for Elder Scrolls fans to have even more ways to enjoy the classic world of Cyrodiil.'
Following its launch yesterday, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has already become a big hit on Steam, with a Switch 2 port rumoured to be on the way.

Love Is Blind UK fans slam furious rant by star in very public display
The next batch of episodes have been released on Netflix A Love Is Blind UK star released a furious rant towards an ex in an explosive row during a reunion party. Today (August 20) saw the next four episodes of the brand new Love Is Blind UK released on Netflix where the newly engaged couples began to navigate their new lives together. But with that, comes more hurdles and obstacles as they live with one another and meet each other's loved ones. As well as tensions rising between the couples, this week also saw a reunion party with the fellow Love Is Blind cast, but it ended in an explosive row. Last week saw human design coach Patrick being guided by his 'spleen' as he decided against proposing to professional singer Aanu. But when the pair came face to face in this week's episodes, Aanu was far from impressed. She said: " I'm quite, what you see is what you get, which I feel like I've not had the same gratitude from you." Apologising for "ruining her experience", Aanu interrupted Patrick as she continued: "You took the experience away from me Patrick. You reassured me so much with your words." She went on to say: "It's let me know then and there. You didn't let me know then and there... You're a liar, you're a liar, you're a liar." Things soon turned sour as Patrick said: "There is no way that me and you were meant to be together..... At the end I basically had to make a decision." But Aanu interrupted, saying: "Your head scarf looks silly as well, it doesn't match your outfit... Why have you got a head scarf on anyway?" Branding the comment as "crazy", Patrick replied: "I thought it would be a good look for me." Aanu eventually stormed away from the conversation, as she stated: "Good luck with your splenic rectum." And fans have been unimpressed with the altercation. Over on Reddit, one user said "Aanu did not Carry herself Well.. that was embarrassing. For her. So uncontrolled." Another said they were "embarrassed", adding: "Yeah she was messy both in the Javen interactions and how hard she went in on Patrick. Embarrassed for her." A third commented: "I'm not done with the episode yet but 'my spinal rectum' made me spit out my water." One fan was left "crying" as they said: "I think his spleen is being burst a bit here crying." On X, one fan said: "'Good luck with your splenic rectum' IM F***** SCREAMING." As another replied: "Aanu", coupled with a line of laughing emojis. A third penned: "I get Aanu was feeling annoyed about how her situation with Patrick ended but she just started acting immature and not letting him talk + making silly jabs .. it was a bit weird."
