Gates of Baglihar Power Project Dam in J-K closed
Ramban (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 13 (ANI): All gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric power project Dam built on the Chenab river in Ramban have been closed, officials said on Tuesday.
Earlier on May 8, two gates of the Baglihar dam were opened. Water was released from the dam due to heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, which could cause flooding.
India has kept the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. India took a slew of measures, including the decision concerning Indus Waters Treaty, to send a strong message to Pakistan for its support to cross-border terrorism following the Pahalgam terror attack.
The Indus system comprises of main Indus River, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. The basin is mainly shared by India and Pakistan with a small share for China and Afghanistan.
Under the Indus Waters Treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, all the waters of three rivers, namely Ravi,Sutlej and Beas ( Eastern Rivers) averaging around 33 million acre feet ( MAF) were allocated to India for exclusive use.The waters of Western rivers - Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab averaging to around 135 MAF were allocated to Pakistan except for specified domestic , non-consumptive and agricultural use permitted to India as provided in the Treaty.
India has also been given the right to generate hydroelectricity through run of the river(RoR) projects on the Western Rivers which, subject to specific criteria for design and operation is unrestricted.
To utilize the waters of the Eastern rivers which have been allocated to India for exclusive use, India has constructed Bhakra Dam on Satluj, Pong and Pandoh Dam on Beas and Thein (Ranjitsagar) on Ravi. These storage works, together with other works like Beas-Sutlej Link, Madhopur-Beas Link, Indira Gandhi Nahar Project etc has helped India utilize most of the waters of waters of Eastern rivers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier this month made a veiled reference to the Indus Waters Treaty and noted that India's rightful share of water was flowing beyond its borders.
'India's water will remain within the nation, serving its rightful purpose for the country's development,' he said.
PM Modi also referred to the Indus Waters Treaty in his adress to the nation yesterday on Operation Sindoor in which Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Indian Armed Forces also repelled the subsequent Pakistan aggression.
Prime Minister said that the way the Pakistani army, Pakistan government are encouraging terrorism, it will destroy Pakistan one day.
'If Pakistan wants to survive, it will have to destroy its terror infrastructure. There is no other way to peace. India's stand is very clear... Terror and talks cannot go together... Terror and trade cannot go together.... Water and blood cannot flow together,' PM Modi said.
'Our greatest strength is our unity against all forms of terrorism. This is certainly not the era of war but this is also not the era of terrorism. Zero tolerance against terrorism is the guarantee for a better world,' he added. (ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the tragedy as 'heartbreaking' and said that he is in touch with ministers and authorities to assist those affected. 'The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has said that the plane 'crashed immediately after takeoff from Ahmedabad.' It has confirmed that 242 people were on board, consisting of two pilots and 10 cabin crew. The aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar. 'We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the crash of the Air India flight with 242 people in a densely-populated area in Ahmedabad. We urge the government to mount swift rescue operations. Our thoughts are with those affected and their families,' the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI (M) wrote on X. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M.K Stalin too said that he has been deeply shocked by the crash of the plane and termed the incident as 'horrifying.' 'My thoughts are with everyone affected and the families of those on board. Hoping every possible effort is underway for rescue and relief,' said Stalin. ‘We are exploring path to reset ties': MEA on India-Canada relations ahead of G7 summit
The Ministry of External Affairs said on 12 June that India is exploring a path to reset ties with Canada. The upcoming meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer India and Canada an important opportunity to exchange views on bilateral and global issues, the foreign ministry said. 'India, Canada vibrant democracies, bound by shared commitment to rule of law,' the MEA said ahead of the G7 meeting. The MEA statement comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he will be attending the G7 Summit later this month in Canada Modi expressed his pleasure after receiving a call from Canadian Prime Minister Mark J Carney, congratulating him on his recent election victory. During the conversation, Modi also thanked Carney for extending an invitation to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. Earlier, there were speculations that Canada may not send an invitation to Prime Minister Modi, considering the strained relationship with India. Also, there was no certainty if PM Modi would accept the offer and may not attend the G7 summit. The India-Canada relations have been strained in recent years, especially under the leadership of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January, paving the way for Mark Carney. Before the latest victory, Carney was sworn in as the 24th prime minister of Canada on March 14, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first global leaders to congratulate Carney for his win. "India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,' Modi said in a post on X. Carney, a political newcomer, had recently described himself as the 'most useful in a crisis.' In his campaign, he identified rebuilding ties with India as a priority, signalling a reset in relations between the two nations. As things stand, India remains a key strategic partner in Carney's plans for Canada's global economic and political engagement, especially given his emphasis on diversifying trade and engaging with like-minded nations. India-Canada relations have been strained since 2023 over allegations by then Trudeau government implicating 'Indian agents' in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and a Khalistani terrorist, outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. In October 2024, ties nosedived further when Canada expelled six Indian diplomats. India denied any involvement in Nijjar's killing and condemned the accusations as baseless. Subsequently, both countries expelled top envoys, froze trade negotiations, and suspended official visits. India has been accusing Canada of harbouring extremism in Canada's Sikh diaspora. Under these circumstances, Carney's victory is being watched closely. The win, experts say, has opened the door for a diplomatic reset, as Carney is seen as more forthcoming than his predecessor, Trudeau. New Delhi views any support for Khalistani elements abroad as a threat to national security. Trudeau was seen as a leader unwilling to act on Indian concerns.

No development in the state for two years, no guarantee even for CM Siddaramaiah: R Ashok
Mysuru: In the last 11 years, continuous development work has been carried out under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, in the state, not a single development project has taken place in the last two years, said Opposition Leader R Ashok. Speaking at a press conference, he compared the 10-year rule of Manmohan Singh with the 11-year rule of Narendra Modi, stating that development has increased fourfold under Modi. Globally, India's economy was ranked 10th or 11th earlier, but now it stands at fourth place, and PM Modi aims to take it to third. During Indira Gandhi's time, India had to beg for wheat from other countries. Under PM Modi, India has supplied COVID vaccines to over 100 countries, he said. During the UPA regime, per capita income was ₹6,000, which has now risen to ₹20,000. Gas cylinder subsidies, which were ₹450 then, are now ₹500. The unsubsidized rate, which was ₹1,250, is now ₹850. In the UPA's 10 years, there were over 9,000 terror attacks. Now, every attack is met with a response. When Mumbai was attacked, no retaliation was made, but after the Pulwama attack, Indian soldiers destroyed terrorist bases, he said. Previously, there were 387 medical colleges; now there are 704. The number of airports has increased from 74 to 149. National highways, which were 91,000 km, are now 1.45 lakh km. AIIMS institutions have grown from 7 to 22. Medical seats have increased from 82,000 to 1.50 lakh. The national budget, which was ₹17 lakh crore, is now ₹50.65 lakh crore. LED bulbs, which cost ₹450 earlier, are now available for ₹70, he said. Earlier, we used to see bullet trains in other countries. Now, 60% of the work on a bullet train in India is complete, and it will soon be operational. Agricultural subsidies, which were ₹30,000 crore earlier, are now ₹1.27 lakh crore. Cooking gas connections have increased from 14 crore to 31 crore. In 11 years, 4 crore houses and 11 crore toilets have been built, and 27 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, he stated. The Congress has always been sympathetic to Naxals, but now there is a goal to completely eradicate the Naxal movement. Significant development work has also taken place in the Northeast states. There was a mindset to abandon Jammu and Kashmir, but after the revocation of its special status, development has increased there, and tourism has boosted local incomes, he said. No guarantee even for Siddaramaiah Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself has no guarantee and is an outgoing CM. His government has achieved nothing in two years. DK Shivakumar has built a separate fortress, while MB Patil and Satish Jarkiholi are acting independently. Not a single irrigation project has been implemented in two years, he alleged. In Congress, everyone claims they will become CM. Parameshwara and DK Shivakumar are waiting to become CM. Due to guarantees, no work is happening, and people want the government to collapse. Four people are pulling at the CM's chair. The BJP has exposed the MUDA scam and the Valmiki Corporation scam, he said. The government is responsible for the stampede tragedy but is blaming the police. The CM himself admitted to inviting the Governor. The Chief Secretary personally called and invited the Governor, but this was not disclosed earlier. To cover up their mistake, action was taken against Govindaraju, he said.
