Mumbai: Metro Line 3 Set To Launch, City Plans Underground Walkways

The first such pedestrian subway is already in the works—a 1 km stretch linking Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking facility.
Mumbai's first fully underground Metro Line, the Aqua Line, is all set for its full launch this August.
Stretching 33.5 km from Aarey to Cuffe Parade, it covers 27 stations and connects key hotspots like Mumbai Central, Churchgate, BKC, and CSMT.
Already, the partial stretch from Aarey to Worli's Acharya Atre Chowk is buzzing with nearly 60,000 daily commuters.
City planners are now dreaming bigger than just underground train rides. In a recent high-level meeting, officials from BMC, MMRCL, MMRDA, and Indian Railways came together to discuss a seamless pedestrian network connected to the metro stations, as per TOI.
Why Is This Important?
Metro Line 3 runs from Aarey to Cuffe Parade, covering 33.5 km and 27 stations, passing through key locations like Mumbai Central, Churchgate, BKC, and CSMT. Currently, about 60,000 people use the partial line daily. With the full corridor opening soon, better connectivity around stations is essential.
The idea is to build underground pedestrian subways within a 500m to 1km radius of stations. These walkways will be equipped with escalators and lifts, ensuring accessibility for everyone.
One of the first proposals is a 1km-long subway from the Acharya Atre Chowk station to Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking facility near Haji Ali. A 160-metre arm will also connect to nearby open areas.
Officials have already started mapping out routes, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) expected in four months.
What Could This Mean for You?
If implemented citywide, this plan could cut down road traffic, make commuting smoother, and encourage walking.

DU allows more flexibility in choosing minor discipline under UGCF

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The University of Delhi has eased its academic rules to allow students greater flexibility in selecting minor disciplines under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022, by doing away with the requirement of choosing specific generic elective (GE) papers. In a notification issued on Tuesday, the university said that students will no longer be required to opt for particular GE papers in order to pursue a discipline as a minor for the purpose of postgraduate admissions. 'In supersession of all previous notifications regarding the provisions of mandatory GEs, it is notified that there shall not be any mandatory requirement for the students to choose any particular general electives to make such discipline a minor for the purpose of seeking admission in the postgraduate programme in that discipline in the university," the notification read. Earlier, the university had mandated that students must take at least three GE papers from a list specified by each department to qualify a subject as a minor, along with the option to choose four additional GE papers from a wider pool. A senior university official said this structure was initially introduced to maintain academic standards and ensure subject familiarity for postgraduate applicants. 'After UGCF was implemented, each department had a set list of GEs that students had to follow in order to pursue that subject as a minor and later apply for PG in the same," the official said. However, with postgraduate admissions now conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), the university has decided to discontinue the mandatory GE requirement. 'Since PG admissions are through entrance exams, students are being assessed independently. There's no need to restrict their GE choices anymore," the official added. The revised rule now allows students to select any GE from the available pool of the particular department, and still be eligible to pursue that discipline for postgraduate studies. NCRTC launches Namo Bharat champions initiative to boost commuter engagement

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has launched a new initiative titled 'Namo Bharat Champions', aimed at fostering continuous improvement in services through active commuter participation, a statement issued on Wednesday said. The commuter engagement programme is based on the principle — 'for the commuters, by the commuters' — and seeks to build a collaborative platform that allows regular feedback and meaningful interaction from Namo Bharat users, the statement said. The NCRTC will under this initiative build a network of interested and like-minded commuters, who voluntarily wish to contribute towards enhancing services and infrastructure across the corridor. These champions will help promote responsible and efficient use of the Namo Bharat system and support its development through constructive suggestions and collaboration, it stated. The recognised Namo Bharat Champions, according to the statement, will also raise awareness about appropriate travel behaviour, available commuter facilities and essential do's and don'ts at stations and on trains. They will be provided with key information about the system along with important contact details for assistance when needed. The programme is also expected to function as a feedback channel to help the NCRTC continuously enhance services and commuter experience. The champions will also get access to exclusive engagement opportunities, including invitations to project launches, events and community meet-ups. The active participants may also be featured on the NCRTC's social media platforms and its official newsletter — Namo Bharat Times. The interested commuters can join the Namo Bharat Champions network by registering via QR codes displayed at stations or through the NCRTC's official website and social media platforms. The members upon registration will receive a welcome message and officially become part of the community, acting as ambassadors for responsible public transport usage, it added.
