Sharks hit back after NRL fixture uproar as Broncos carnage rocks finals race

Yahoo6 days ago
Craig Fitzgibbon says it's 'disrespectful' to suggest the Sharks have a soft draw to finish the regular season and reminded critics about his side's brutal fixture schedule earlier in the year. It comes after Thursday night's triple-injury carnage for the Broncos that has thrown the NRL finals race wide open, and left the Sharks in a position to pounce.
Fitzgibbon's men come up against St George Illawarra in a local derby at Jubilee Stadium on Saturday, and the Sharks could leapfrog the Broncos, Panthers and Warriors into fourth spot if other results go their way. Cronulla would need the Knights to spring an upset at home to reigning premiers Penrith on Friday night and for the Bulldogs to take care of the Warriors in the final game on Saturday night.
But regardless of what transpires this weekend, Cronulla's fixtures in the run home have them earmarked as a genuine contender to finish the season in the top-four. Across their final five games of the regular season, the Sharks won't have to travel outside of Sydney once. They also have a guaranteed two competition points from an upcoming bye and play only one other current top-eight team - the Bulldogs - in round 27.
Cronulla's seemingly favourable run of fixtures comes after years of accusations that the Sharks often benefit from 'soft' draws. And after hearing fresh rumblings around their end-of-season schedule, a frustrated Fitzgibbon hit back at the criticism. He pointed out their brutal start to the season, which included the equal-most games against last year's top eight and tricky road trips to Las Vegas, Townsville, Perth and Melbourne.
Sharks coach slams 'disrespectful' claims about 'soft' draw
"With all due respect to that getting spat out, we've had one of the hardest draws in recent history (this year)," the Sharks coach. And Fitzgibbon says a number of recent upsets should be enough proof that there is no such thing as a 'soft' draw in the NRL.
Cellar dwellers the Titans shocked the fourth-placed Warriors a couple of weeks ago in round 21, and almost sprang another upset against Penrith last week. The Eels also stunned the Broncos in round 21, while the Tigers belted the third-placed Bulldogs last week to jump into 11th spot on a congested NRL ladder.
"The bottom teams are beating the top teams at the moment so how do we sit there and say the draw is favourable, when one slip and you're in trouble? The competition is so tight, it's so close," Fitzgibbon added. "I think it's disrespectful to your opponents sometimes. Look at the Titans in the last couple of weeks. There's been a lot of teams playing really good footy across the whole competition."
It's why Fitzgibbon is approaching Saturday's match against the Dragons with extra caution, following the Red V's own upset victory over ladder-leaders Canberra last week. But with top-four rivals the Warriors and Broncos both ravaged by injuries to key players, it's opened the door for Cronulla to take advantage.
Triple injury blow rocks Brisbane's finals hopes
Brisbane's finals hopes were dealt a crushing blow in Thursday night's 22-2 loss to the Storm, with halves Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam, and winger Selwyn Cobbo all suffering hamstring injuries. Viewers were left in disbelief as Reynolds and Mam both went down in the same play during the first half as Storm winger Xavier Coates took an intercept and raced downfield.

Cobbo became the third Broncos star to leave the game with a hamstring injury after being helped from the field in the second half. All three are having scans to determine the extent of their injuries, but the trio will almost certainly face multiple weeks on the sidelines in a massive blow to Brisbane's hopes of remaining in the top-eight.
Unbelievable scenes with both Adam Reynolds & Ezra Mam suffering hamstring injuries on the one play - a turn & chase on Xavier Coates. Both high speed mechanisms & noticeably limping - likely multi-week recoveries incoming & as we've seen with other similar cases recently could… pic.twitter.com/5697FBRKVq

Selwyn Cobbo also left the field after suffering a hamstring injury - the 3rd one of the game for the Broncos.Even minor hamstring strains often result in a 2-4 week return to play, so another likely looking at a multi-week recovery. A brutal night for Broncos hamstrings. pic.twitter.com/UcjMTZAyG2

Australia punter playing at Nebraska breaks down while discussing homesickness

Life as a college football player requires tremendous sacrifice, from early morning workouts to the demanding balance between academic and athletic responsibilities that leaves little in the way of free time. Some athletes carry a heavier burden than others. Archie Wilson is a freshman punter at Nebraska who joined the program over the summer. To play for the Cornhuskers, he left his home in Australia and traveled halfway across the globe. REQUIRED READING: What are the best college football games of Week1? We list the top 10 It has been a difficult adjustment mentally and emotionally for Wilson, who expressed some understandable feelings of homesickness when asked about it this week while fighting through tears. 'I love (my family) a lot,' Wilson said during a news conference during Nebraska's fall training camp. 'I've got two little brothers and a mom and dad. That's the tough part about being here. I love them a lot and I miss them. But they know this is what's best for me.' The clip of Wilson received widespread attention on social media, with many people empathizing with him and the pain he has carried. Though Wilson is new to college football, he played Australian rules football at Haileybury College as a full-back. More notably, he was trained by the Prokick Australia program, which has produced eight Ray Guy Award winners and 29 players that have earned NFL or CFL contracts. He's one of two punters on Nebraska's roster. For all he has shouldered since leaving home, Wilson will get some much-needed relief later this month. When the Huskers open their 2025 season on August 28 against Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium, there will be some familiar faces in the crowd cheering him on. 'It's good I can still talk to them plenty over the phone and they're coming in to see the first few games, so I'm looking forward to that,' he said. Why Alfie Davis is confident he can exploit Gadzhi Rabadanov in PFL 9 final

Alfie Davis sees a kink in Gadzhi Rabadanov's armor – especially in five-round fights. Davis (19-5-1) meets Rabadanov (26-4-2) in Friday's 2025 PFL World Tournament 9: Finals headliner (ESPN, ESPN+) at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. The last time Rabadanov tasted defeat was in a five-round decision loss to Mehdi Dakaev in December 2020. Davis took a lot from that fight. "I definitely went back to when he lost because although he's been on a bit of a streak, I think people just stylistically and tendencies are still the same," Davis told MMA Junkie Radio. "Even myself, I still have tendencies and stuff that I do when I first started kickboxing. I just think your body is designed in certain ways. So, I definitely looked at his last loss, and it was a five rounder. So, he got exploited in that one when he lost in the five rounder. "He got tired. His style of boxing didn't really lend to the style that this guy was using, so I watched that. Also, I've been watching even his recent wins. Some of them, he's had some edgy moments, like particularly his fight against J.J. Wilson. He nearly lost that fight. There were some other fights where they were quite close, and he's made some stuff that I feel like I can exploit." Davis has surprised many with his route to the finals by taking out veterans Clay Collard and Brent Primus. He understands how life changing the $500,000 can be but insists that winning a world title has more value to him. "I keep pinching myself, and I'm like, wow, if I win this money, it's mad what it can do for me and my family," Davis said. "But equally I've got a job to do, and I think winning the title and what that represents will mean more to me. I've always had this inclination that I'm going to earn a lot of money in my life. I feel like I work hard, I educate myself. "So, I feel like it's only a matter of time before I earn a lot of money. But there's not a lot of time where you become a world champion. I've got a certain window where I can do that. So, the money is a big deal, don't get me wrong, but it's more about me performing and showing what I've been working so hard on for so many years."
