The police on Tuesday detained senior Kashmiri journalist Hilal Mir for allegedly 'disseminating content on social media to disturb peace', police said in a statement. J&K police's counter intelligence, Kashmir (CIK), detained Mir, a resident of Bemina in Srinagar, and seized digital devices, including a mobile and a laptop. (File)
J&K police's counter intelligence, Kashmir (CIK), detained Mir, a resident of Bemina in Srinagar, and seized digital devices, including a mobile and a laptop. 'The radical social media user, operating social media X account 'hilal mir' and Facebook account 'Mir Hilal', used to disseminate extremist/distorted content with an intention to disturb peace and promote disaffection and secessionist ideology and present India in a bad shape,' the statement said.
Mir has been a journalist for more than two decades and worked at two prominent local dailies. He also worked with some prominent national and international media organisations. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is currently a content editor/ producer at a Dubai based magazine.
Mir or his family are yet to issue a statement.
'A preliminary inspection of the digital devices revealed access to the radical account along with incriminating materials and other extremist/distorted content/propaganda,' the police statement added.

NEW DELHI: Punjab Police has requested details from dating platform Tinder regarding an account potentially connected to Khadoor Sahib MP , who faces charges in a Sikh activist's murder case. Last October, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that Nau's killing was allegedly orchestrated by Amritpal Singh, who is presently detained under the National Security Act. Two gang members involved in the shooting have been arrested under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Arms Act. "On 09-10-2024, Gurpreet Singh, a well-known online activist, was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle. The deceased managed a Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks' and had been outspoken against the Sikh radical Amritpal Singh. Shooters have been apprehended and are under investigation." "During the course of investigation, a Tinder account under the name 'Amrit Sandhu' (screenshot attached) was identified, and the account is suspected to be linked with Amritpal Singh, accused in the said FIR. They also seek information about linked accounts, media files, contacts and chat history. Amritpal Singh, representing Khadoor Sahib constituency, is currently imprisoned in Dibrugarh jail, Assam, under the National Security Act (NSA). As leader of 'Waris Punjab De', Amritpal, who modelled himself after Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was imprisoned alongside nine associates under the NSA.

Punjab Police ask Tinder for details on profile linked to radical preacher Amritpal Singh
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police has sought information from dating app Tinder about an account suspected to be linked with radical preacher and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who has been booked in the murder of a Sikh activist. In a communication to Tinder, the Faridkot police said it was probing the murder case of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau, who was shot dead on October 9 last year while returning home from the village Gurdwara on his motorcycle. Nau was a member of the radical outfit 'Waris Punjab De' headed by Amritpal Singh. Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, in October last year, claimed that Nau was killed allegedly at the behest of Amritpal Singh, who is currently jailed under the stringent National Security Act. Police also claimed that gangster-turned-terrorist Arshdeep Singh, alias Arsh Dalla, was the mastermind behind the killing. It said two shooters of the gang have been arrested in the case, registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
