Housefull 5 is driven by women: Director on critics calling film sexist

Director Tarun Mansukhani called the criticism of his film 'Housefull 5' a product of the audience's sensibilities. In an interview recently, he reacted to a section of the audience calling the film sexist. Mansukhani, known for 'Dostana' and 'Drive', shared that women are driving the story this time, and he has done "a lot more" to director said the audience can choose to filter the film from a gender perspective, but women in 'Housefull 5' have got a lot to do. "It's Sonam (Bajwa) who backstabs Riteish (Deshmukh) and helps further the plot, that in turn helps bring a third Jolly. The actual plot is driven by women – to get money. There's a Soundarya who's equal parts a suspect in this entire thing," he told News18 Showsha in an asked about designing misogynist male characters in the film, Mansukhani said he looks at these men as "flawed characters". He said, "One may choose to see a sexist side to it, but I feel that I've done a lot more." The director went on to explain how even criticism of the film stands as testimony to the fact that the audience is watching it. He shared in the same interview that the viewers can choose to 'scrutinise' the story because they are the ones paying to watch it."It means that they're watching it with a certain eye and sensibility. You can scrutinise it. That's fine. You've paid money to watch it and so, you get to have an opinion on my film," he went on, "It's not a placid film about which you don't care or have an opinion. For those who're calling it out, I want to say that it's your choice to see and focusing on that aspect of the film."advertisement'Housefull 5' stars Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh as the three Jollies, facing murder charges on a cruise, with their respective partners, played by Sonam Bajwa, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nargis gave a two-star rating to the film and wrote in its review: "Women are merely on board for their glossy bodies, and to make the men in the franchise look smarter than they are. Sexually explicit references masquerade as jokes, and self-deprecating humour is limited to name-swapping and men pretending they have full control of the situation."The film is written and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, and is performing well at the box office. It crossed the benchmark of Rs 100 crore in four days, and is now looking at wrapping up a strong first week. IN THIS STORY#Akshay Kumar#Abhishek Bachchan#Riteish Deshmukh
