Horry County patrol division sergeant fired amid internal probe of deadly 2023 road-rage shooting
Paul Damon Vescovi's last day with the department was on Wednesday, HCPD said in a news release. He had been with the department for 23 years.
News13 Investigates: Documents offer look into how Horry County authorities handled Scott Spivey case
'Since March 2025, when HCPD requested a review of the incident, HCPD has been cooperating with SLED in the state agency's potential misconduct investigation,' the department said. 'A simultaneous HCPD IA investigation is also being conducted. In April 2025, as part of the incident and case review, law enforcement identified conduct unbecoming of an officer, as defined by HCPD General Orders, as well as a violation of general Horry County employee conduct guidelines.'
The internal investigation is ongoing, and the department said it will continue to review the case and take immediate action as needed, and to cooperate with the South Carolina Law Enforcment Divison, which is conducting a criminal investigation into potential misconduct related to the Sept. 9, 2023, Camp Swamp Road shooting that resulted in the death of 33-year-old Tabor City resident Scott Spivey.
'We will continue to pursue the truth in this incident,' Police Chief Kris Leonhardt said in the news release. 'Any of those found to be in violation of policy or law will be held accountable. Misconduct will not be tolerated at HCPD, regardless of when it occurred, and we remain committed to upholding the highest standards moving forward.'
Vescovi's firing comes about seven weeks after Brandon Strickland, then a deputy chief, resigned amid SLED's alleged misconduct in the Spivey investigation. He had been with the department since 2005.

Fire destroys multiple houses on Fripp Island; SLED investigating
State law enforcement officials are investigating a fire that raged across a row of side-by-side two-story houses on the gated community of Fripp Island Saturday, destroying three and damaging others, according to residents and fire officials. When reached at about 4 p.m., Fripp Fire Chief Joshua Horton said The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was investigating the blaze. Any details about the fire, Horton added, would need to come from SLED. A SLED spokesperson was not immediately available for comment. SLED has an Arson Unit, which can be asked by local authorities to investigate what it refers to as 'incendiary' cases. SLED's Lowcountry office said at around 4:45 p.m. that a SLED agent was on the way to the scene. As of 3 p.m. the flames had been extinguished but first responders were still on the scene mopping up and investigating. Christine Denney, who owns a maintenance company and works for Sand Castle Property Management, arrived on the scene at 10:46 a.m. and saw three houses engulfed in flames. 'They are very close together,' Denney told the Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet. 'Two of them had already collapsed by the time I got there.' Denney said the houses were two-stories tall with parking underneath. She was not sure if they were rental units but the houses are located on the way toward the marina. Firefighters, she said, were 'working their tails off' trying to put the fire out. 'It was sad to watch fires burn the three houses,' she said. Among the fire departments on the scene were Fripp, Burton, Lady's Island-St. Helena and Beaufort-Port Royal. The fire impacted multiple properties. Scott Harris, a spokesman for the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire Department, confirmed with the newspapers at 3 p.m. that three homes were involved at least. The fire was out but firefighters remained on the scene for 'overhaul and investigation.' 'The cause and the extent of damage are still undetermined,' Harris said. As the fire raged, residents of the area reported the news online, sharing photos and video of the houses on Bonito Drive in flames. 'Fripp Island Near The Boathouse. 4 Houses On Fire Right Now,' Aldrena McKinnon reported on Facebook. 'Keep praying.' 'The sirens continue to scream by as Fripp Island has just experienced a tragic event with the loss of 3 Bonito Rd. houses and two more houses being damaged,' Kathy Folds, a real estate agent company owner, said on Facebook. She reported that a house 714 Bonito Drive was damaged and the houses at 716, 718 and 720 were burned down. She added that the house at the address of 722 was on fire but not burned down. Fripp Island is a private, gated community located 20 miles east of Beaufort on the Atlantic coast. 'Out of respect for the families involved, I am going to pause messaging for the weekend,' the 'Fripp Uncensored' Facebook page messaged members at 3:30 p.m. This is a developing story. Duke Dennis, Twitch and YouTube star, arrested while playing hide and seek at Texas mall
Twitch and YouTube star Duke Dennis was arrested at a mall in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday while partaking in a game of hide and seek, police said. The content creator — whose real name is Denzel Dennis — is part of the online collective know as AMP, which also includes streaming superstar Kai Cenat. Dennis, 31, was at the Shops at Rivercenter on Saturday night playing hide and seek with others while the mall was closed, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Officers responded to the mall "to remove individuals playing hide and seek" as they were "causing disruption throughout the area," police said. Security guards had advised said individuals — including Dennis — to leave the mall but they refused, per police. "An officer instructed the suspect to leave, and the suspect verbally and physically refused to leave the location," police said. "An officer instructed the suspect to place his hands by his back and that he would be arrested for criminal trespassing private property." Dennis allegedly ran away, but security guards and officers were able to arrest him, police said. He was charged with criminal trespassing and evading arrest, according to online records. Another person allegedly tried to interfere with Dennis' arrest by pushing an officer. This individual was also arrested and charged with five counts, including three counts of assault on an officer, one count of interfering with the duties of a public servant and one count of resisting arrest, per online records. Video circulating on social media shows a person who appears to be Dennis getting arrested at the Shops at Rivercenter. Kai Cenat can also be seen in the video, seemingly recording the arrest from the floor above. Dennis has not publicly commented on his arrest, but did share a story to his Instagram on Sunday alluding to him taking a social media break. "Officially on vacation, need suggestions on where to yall later," Dennis wrote. AMP, which stands for "Any Means Possible," is a YouTube collective consisting of Dennis, Cenat, Agent 00, Fanum, ImDavisss and ChrisNxtDoor. The group is known for documenting themselves as they partake in an array of challenges, and sometimes collaborate with other social media personalities for content, including Mr. Beast, Druski and Keith Lee. The group spent the month of July streaming their daily activities for 12 hours a day in what they called "AMP Summer." The trailer for "AMP Summer" featured musician T-Pain. It is not clear if the game of hide and seek at the Shops at Rivercenter was part of an AMP video.

Popular streamer Duke Dennis arrested as fellow AMP member Kai Cenat looks on
Popular streamer Duke Dennis was arrested in San Antonio over the weekend after authorities accused him of trespassing in a local shopping mall. Dennis, 31, was arrested Saturday, Aug. 2, county jail records show, and charged with criminal trespassing and evading arrest. The popular content creator was released from custody late in the evening on Aug. 3 after meeting a cash bond of $1,000 per charge. USA TODAY has reached out to the San Antonio police department for additional information. Dennis, who has racked up millions of followers on YouTube and Twitch, is a member of the content group AMP, which also includes popular streamer Kai Cenat. AMP, short for Any Means Possible, is a collective of streamers, each with their own loyal fan base, who pool their audiences to create joint content, whether through online gaming streams or viral challenges. The other four members of the group are ImDavisss, Chrisnxtdoor, Fanum and Agent 00. Cenat, who catapulted to fame after joining the group, was present during the arrest, according to videos posted to social media. They show Dennis sitting on the floor of the mall handcuffed as Cenat, a floor above, captures video of the incident on his phone. Neither Cenat nor Dennis has shared an official statement regarding the arrest though the latter did post an Instagram story the evening of Sunday, Aug. 3, the same day as his release, with a black screen accompanied by the text: "Officially on vacation, need suggestions on where to go... See y'all later." His arrest comes on the heels of a major month of AMP. The group camped out in a Texas mega-mansion for the entirety of July, streaming for 12 hours each day for 31 days straight.
