Irv Gotti Reportedly Passes Away at 54 After Diabetes-Related Stroke
Irv Gotti, the influential music producer and co-founder of Murder Inc. Records, has reportedly passed away at the age of 54 after suffering a diabetes-related stroke.
According to reports from AllHipHop, Gotti had been placed on life support after a severe stroke earlier this week left him unresponsive.
The tragic event follows a minor stroke he suffered last year, which was previously thought to be under control after he adopted a healthier lifestyle.
Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. on June 26, 1970, had been struggling with diabetes for years. A representative told TMZ last year that his condition had led to a previous stroke six months prior. At the time, Gotti was reportedly focused on improving his health by changing his diet and working toward a full recovery. However, this week's medical emergency proved to be far more severe, ultimately leading to his reported passing.
A visionary in the hip-hop industry, Gotti founded Murder Inc. in 1999, propelling it into one of the most dominant labels of the early 2000s. His sharp ear for talent and ability to craft hits helped launch the careers of artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti. Under his leadership, the label became synonymous with chart-topping success, delivering timeless hits such as:
Ja Rule's 'Always on Time' and 'Livin' It Up'
Ashanti's 'Foolish' and 'Happy'
Jennifer Lopez's 'I'm Real (Remix)' featuring Ja Rule
DMX's 'What's My Name?' and 'Slippin''
Gotti's influence extended beyond his own label, as he collaborated with some of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B, including Jay-Z, Aaliyah, Kanye West, Lloyd, Keyshia Cole, Mic Geronimo, and Mary J. Blige.
Despite its success, Murder Inc. faced major legal and industry battles. In 2004, the label came under federal investigation for alleged money laundering ties to drug lord Kenneth 'Supreme' McGriff. Though Gotti and his brother Chris Lorenzo were acquitted in 2005, the controversy led to a decline in the label's dominance.
As a result, Murder Inc. rebranded as The Inc. Records in an attempt to move past its legal troubles. However, in 2016, Gotti revived the Murder Inc. brand, attempting to reestablish its influence in the music scene.
Gotti's talents were not limited to music. In 2017, he created Tales, a scripted anthology series on BET that reimagined classic hip-hop songs into cinematic stories. The show was praised for its innovative storytelling, further cementing Gotti's role as a creative powerhouse.
Additionally, he had been working on multiple film and television projects, including a Murder Inc. documentary series chronicling the label's rise and fall.
Following reports of his passing, fans and artists alike have taken to social media to pay tribute to the man who shaped an era of hip-hop. While an official statement from his family or representatives has yet to be released, many in the hip-hop community are mourning the loss of a legend.
Ja Rule, who shared a close relationship with Gotti throughout his career, posted a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter), saying, 'This one hurts… forever grateful. RIP big bro.' Ashanti and other artists who worked with Gotti are expected to share their tributes in the coming hours.
Irv Gotti's influence on hip-hop is undeniable. From producing some of the biggest anthems of the early 2000s to shaping the careers of multiple superstars, his impact will be felt for generations. While his passing is a tragic loss, his contributions to music, television, and culture ensure that his legacy will live on.
The hip-hop world has lost a true pioneer, but his music and vision will continue to inspire artists for years to come.

Jin stopped by The Tonight Show to perform his song 'Don't Say You Love Me' and to chat with host Jimmy Fallon about the future of BTS. Appearing alongside a live band, Jin took the stage to showcase emotional single 'Don't Say You Love Me,' which comes off his recent EP, Echo. It will mark the first time the seven band members will be together after completing their military service in South Korea. 'It was great to be alone, but when they come back, since they worked very hard, I'm going to honor them and give them great respect,' Jin said of BTS. 'They are my lifesavers, so I need to show my appreciation and take care of them.' He described the difference between Happy and Echo, explaining that on the new release he was 'able to capture my feelings better.' Of 'Don't Say You Love Me' Jin said, 'When you're in love sometimes you know that it's time to leave, but you can't bring yourself to do it. The song is about that emotion. So it's sad, but it's also bittersweet.' The musician also reflected on what it was like to have Tom Cruise on his YouTube show, Run Jin, earlier this week. 'He was responsible for my childhood cultural experiences, so it was a great honor to see him in person,' Jin told Fallon. He added, 'There is a small part of me that wants to do action movies, but I'm not as adventurous as Tom Cruise.' Jin will embark on his first solo world tour this summer. The #RUNSEOKJIN_EP.TOUR — complicatedly named after the singer's Run Jin variety show on YouTube — will visit nine cities this summer. Four of them — Anaheim, Dallas, Tampa, and Newark, New Jersey — are in the U.S. Each city is currently booked for two shows: July 17 and 18 at Anaheim's Honda Center, July 22 and 23 at Dallas' American Airlines Center, July 26 and 27 at Tampa's Amalie Arena, and July 30 and 31 at Newark's Prudential Center. The trek, which begins in South Korea and Japan before moving to the U.S., is currently scheduled to conclude in London and then Amsterdam. Jin teased the upcoming shows, telling Fallon fans can 'expect my 'not so bad' vocals.' 'On top of that, you can look forward to seeing my handsome face up close,' he said. 'Just a joke!' He added that he had the tour in mind while making Echo so he ended up with 'a lot more energetic songs.'
