Rupee surges to highest level in August; ends 40 paise higher at 86.95/$
The domestic currency closed 40 paise or 0.45 per cent higher at 86.95 against the dollar on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. During the day, it rose to the 86.92 level but pared some gains at the end. During the year so far, the currency has depreciated by 1.57 per cent.
The gain in the currency was fuelled by the Centre's proposal to ease the complex GST system into two slabs of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, with a 40 per cent bracket reserved for sin goods. In his Independence Day speech, the prime minister had promised 'a double Diwali'.
Rupee marked a strong positive move after S&P upgraded India's economic outlook following PM Modi's GST reduction announcement, Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst - Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.
While US tariffs remain a concern, the S&P upgrade reflects confidence in India's economic development. Additionally, positive triggers emerged from India-Japan ties ahead of PM Modi's visit to Japan on August 29, further improving sentiment, he added. "With FIIs showing reduced selling pressure, the rupee is expected to trade in a range of 86.60-87.25."
The unwinding of long dollar positions and support from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prevented the currency from hitting a new record low after coming close two weeks ago.
The Rupee today also shrugged off any major impact from the rising dollar, which climbed to 98.21 on Tuesday as Trump hosted talks on ending the war in Ukraine and traders cut bets on a September rate cut ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech.
The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.15 per cent at 98.02.
In commodities, crude oil prices were trading lower on optimism over trilateral talks with Russia. Brent crude price was down 0.92 per cent at 65.99 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were lower by 0.98 per cent at 62.8, as of 3:45 PM IST.

SC bench on presidential reference says it is only giving advisory view, not sitting in appeal over governor timelines ruling
New Delhi: The Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, presiding over a presidential reference case on whether the Supreme court can lay down timelines and procedures for the President and state governors, on Tuesday verbally remarked that it was only sitting in an "advisory jurisdiction" and not in appeal over the judgement by a division bench which laid down the timelines. "We will be expressing just a view on law, not on the decision in the Tamil Nadu case," the CJI verbally told counsels for the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu who raised preliminary objections to the president's reference on grounds of maintainability. "We are in advisory jurisdiction; we are not in appellate (jurisdiction). In Article 143, the court can render an opinion that a certain judgement does not lay down correct law but it will not overrule the judgement," said justice Surya Kant, part of the five member Constitution bench. However, solicitor general Tushar Mehta appearing for the Centre cited a judicial precedent to contend that the top court can even overrule a judgement in advisory jurisdiction. Mehta argued that the instant case is a "sui generis (unique) case. The court can even overrule the judgement". At this, CJI Gavai orally responded: "A view can be overruled, not decision." The bench also orally remarked that it found nothing wrong in the president seeking the advice of the top court on the issue. "When the Honourable president is seeking views of this court, what is wrong in that," CJI Gavai remarked. Live Events Appearing on behalf of the Centre, attorney general R Venkataramani questioned the apex court's April ruling that set timelines for governors and the president to grant assent to bills passed by legislatures. The AG argued: "Can the court go to the extent where it says let me take pen and paper and rewrite the Constitution?" Speaking for the bench, Justice PS Narasimha orally remarked: "See the egregious situation where it had come to... It was to remedy that situation that the court stepped in... The bills were pending for so long." The senior SC judge was referring to bills pending with the Tamil Nadu governor for a long period of time. The AG argued that the judgement had created "functional disharmony" and resulted in a "constitutional functional problem". The AG added that no deadline can be imposed on the president or governors to decide on bills passed by a state legislature. On May 15, in a rare move, President Droupadi Murmu invoked Article 143(1) of the Constitution to send a reference to the SC following its April 8 ruling that set timelines for governors and the president to grant assent to bills passed by state legislatures. In her reference, the President posed 14 questions to the court and sought its opinion on whether such deadlines could be imposed judicially.

Shine a dozen: Capex push in the works for next-gen PSUs
New Delhi: The Centre is planning to promote next-generation public sector undertakings (PSUs) in the critical minerals , renewables, aerospace, electronics and defence sectors by infusing more capital, helping them expand and facilitating their technological enhancement to align with India's medium- to long-term economic goals. It has shortlisted about a dozen such PSUs, including IREL India , Bharat Electronics Ltd , Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders , Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd, REC Ltd and Central Warehousing Corporation, for systemic and technical reforms, according to officials. The PSUs have been chosen from the sectors which are expected to have strategic importance for the country in the coming years and are likely to play a key role in economic growth, they said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo "Our first-generation PSUs are doing well and working well, and there is a need to create next-generation PSUs in areas which are critical for the next phase of economic reforms ," said a senior official, who did not wish to be identified. Live Events The initiative is part of a series of reforms being initiated by the Centre under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister's Office to achieve the vision of India 2047, the official said. The Department of Public Enterprises will undertake a detailed overview along with the ministries concerned, after which the NITI Aayog will help prepare a roadmap for the exercise. The Centre may expand the list during the review, according to the official. "The idea is to make existing PSUs bigger, which can work in sync with reforms in sectors critical for the country's manufacturing, exports and export-dependent sectors," said the official. For instance, IREL India would tie in well with initiatives like the National Critical Mineral Mission. In the past three years the Centre has taken a similar initiative for the fertilizer sector amid the Russia-Ukraine war, infusing capital into many closed units and making them functional. As a result, in 2023-24, India recorded its highest domestic production of urea, exceeding 314 lakh metric tonnes. In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the formation of a task force for next-generation reforms to evaluate all current laws, rules and procedures related to economic activities to deliver results within a set timeline. On Monday, he set the ball rolling by chairing a meeting with senior Union ministers, secretaries and economists to deliberate on the roadmap for next-gen reforms.

India sets eyes on 10% of global green hydrogen demand
New Delhi: India aims to capture nearly 10% of global green hydrogen demand that is expected to exceed 100 million metric tonnes by 2030, minister of state for power and new and renewable energy Shripad Naik said on Tuesday. Substantial progress has been made towards green hydrogen production targets with 862,000 tonnes per year of production capacity already awarded to 19 companies under the National Green Hydrogen Mission , Naik said at the FICCI Green Hydrogen Summit 2025. The government has also awarded 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies. "We want to make India not only a major producer but also a global hub for green hydrogen export,' Naik said, outlining the country's strategy to position itself as a reliable exporter. Global green and clean hydrogen market is making headway led by lowering prices, industry executives said. 'In one of the global tenders, green has come out cheaper than blue," Vipul Tuli, chair of FICCI's Renewable Energy CEOs Committee and Sembcorp India, said. "Please understand the implications of that - it's a very significant development." The EU demonstrated strong support for bilateral cooperation in the sector. Dr Ewa Suwara, Charge d'affaires of the EU delegation to India, announced plans for enhanced collaboration following the second India-EU Green Hydrogen Forum held in Rotterdam in May 2025. Live Events
