Doja Cat defends rap skills after Outside Lands debut: ‘I'm incredible'

Doja Cat clapped back against online criticism about her Outside Lands performance over the weekend, defending her rap skills and declaring that she is 'incredible.'
The Grammy-winning artist, who headlined the San Francisco music festival on Friday, Aug. 8, engaged in a back-and-forth with X user @playeration after they called out her musical style on the platform.
"Hopefully after Doja drops pop disco album of the century her fans can stop trying to force her into female rap conversations," the X user initially posted on Saturday, Aug. 9, referring to Doja Cat's forthcoming fifth studio album, "Vie."
The genre-bending singer and rapper teased the project, performing her new single 'Jealous Type' during her Outside Lands headlining set Friday. She also hosted a surprise listening party at the soon-to-close queer nightclub Oasis immediately after her Golden Gate Park set.
She had previously told V Magazine that 'Vie' is 'pop-driven.'
The @playeration continued by adding that Doja Cat 'can't be taken seriously as a rapper without ever prioritizing bars, punchlines, wordplay, and storytelling.'
That's when the artist chimed in.
"You don't listen to or read enough of my writing to be able to make this claim. I'm alright at what I do and sometimes I'm incredible," she responded on Sunday, Aug. 10. "Please stop trying to downplay my ability it feels like you're doling out criticism with no constructiveness based on something that's deeper than just the topic of music."
When the @playeration replied to Doja Cat, noting that the criticism is 'not personal,' the two engaged in a brief conversation in the thread. The X user explained that they have listened to the 'Paint the Town Red' artist's full catalogue, but doesn't rate her as highly as rappers like Rakim, Jay-Z and Jeezy.
'That's not hate, it's just a difference in what I look for in rap,' @playeration wrote.
Doja Cat replied that she respects their perspective.
'If you haven't been able to find a bar that you can connect with, that's more than okay,' she wrote. 'That's your right.'
The conversation came two days after Doja Cat's Outside Lands debut, during which she showed off her new '80s-esque aesthetic and new track. Though she didn't draw as large of a crowd as fellow Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, who performed on the Lands End stage just a few hours before her, Doja Cat got thousands of her fans moving with hits such as 'Woman,' 'Agora Hils' and 'Boss Bitch.'
Her subsequent appearance at Oasis came at a trying time for the beloved South of Market drag hot spot, which plans to close at the end of the year due to ongoing financial challenges.
'Her people approached us. She wanted to drop her three new songs in a queer venue,' Oasis owner D'Arcy Drollinger, who also serves as San Francisco's drag laureate, told the Chronicle about how the event came to fruition. 'It was such a joyous feeling in the room'
During her post-festival show, Doja Cat previewed portions of 'Vie,' which has no release date yet, and chatted casually with fans from the stage of the 531-capacity venue.
'She was so gracious. Not a single diva moment,' Drollinger said. 'So kind and easy and effortless.'

Halle Berry throws shade at ex David Justice's divorce comments in cheeky birthday post

If Halle Berry has learned anything in her nearly six decades, it's how to take criticism in stride. The Oscar-winning actress, whose ex-husband David Justice opened up about their 90s divorce in a recent interview, seemingly responded to her former spouse's remarks in a cheeky Instagram post on Aug. 14, which coincided with her 59th birthday. Berry shared a series of photos from her birthday celebration, which included festive snaps of the actress lounging seaside in a bikini, spending time with boyfriend Van Hunt and enjoying a slice of chocolate cake. "Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering," Berry captioned the post. Berry's social media comment appeared to be a callout addressing Justice's remarks from his "All the Smoke" podcast appearance, during which he reflected on the couple's high-profile relationship (Berry and Justice were married from 1993 to 1997.) "She asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months," Justice said on the Aug. 7 episode. "I don't know if my heart was really into it. But I didn't want to make her feel bad and say no. I was just in the moment, it caught me off-guard." Halle Berry's ex David Justice opens up: Baseball veteran reveals stunning reason for ending marriage David Justice reveals reason for Halle Berry divorce Justice added that he didn't face "a lot of negative attention" until he separated from Berry in 1996. Explaining the reasoning for their split, the former Atlanta Braves outfielder said the state of Berry's domestic life was a red flag for him. "I'm looking at my mom. I'm a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I'm thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean," Justice said. "And I'm thinking, 'OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?' And at that time, as a young guy, she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem, like, motherly." But looking back, Justice said he could have handled his divorce with Berry differently. "I didn't ease out" of the relationship, the baseball veteran reflected, adding that "my knowledge and my understanding and my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast." "That girl really did love me, and I can see why she would be so mad at me," Justice said. "Because imagine if you really love somebody, and they tell you they want to break up, and there's nothing you can say to get them back. That had to have been tough on her." Berry is in a long-term relationship with Hunt, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. Her marriage to Justice was in the 90s. She then married Eric Benét (2001 to 2005) and Olivier Martinez (2013 to 2016). She has two children: Nahla, 17, whose dad is ex-partner Gabriel Aubry, and son Maceo, 11, whom she had with Martinez.

Taylor Swift just gave her longest interview ever. Here's what we learned

Taylor Swift is back in the spotlight for the first time since wrapping up her record-breaking Eras Tour last year, and the internet is losing its mind. The pop superstar made her podcast debut on Wednesday, Aug. 13, for an episode of 'New Heights,' hosted by her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and his brother, retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. 'This podcast got me a boyfriend ever since Travis decided to use it as his personal dating app about two years ago,' Swift quipped, referring to the football player shooting his shot on the show after attending an Eras Tour show in Kansas City. During the nearly two hour-long episode — the Grammy winner's longest interview to date — Swift chatted with the Kelce brothers about everything from her first Chiefs game to post-tour hobbies like sewing, baking and watching football. But for her fans tuning in around the globe, it was what she revealed about her forthcoming studio album, 'The Life of a Showgirl,' that was most exhilarating. Due out Oct. 3, Swift also unveiled her 12th studio album's art and tracklist. Streaming live on YouTube on Wednesday, the episode drew more than 1 million viewers — enough to briefly crash the feed — and set a record for most concurrent views on the platform for a podcast. The story behind how Taylor Swift secured her masters After wrapping up the Eras Tour, the singer said that she and her team decided to approach the private equity firm Shamrock Capital, which owned her masters at the time, about if they'd be willing to sell. 'I'm in the business of human emotion. I would so much rather lead heart-first in something like this, rather than send lawyers or management in a big crew,' she explained. So she deployed her family: 'I sent my mom and my brother, who I work with, to L.A.' Their mission was successful, she confirmed in May, and Swift was able to purchase the rights to her first six albums. She got teary-eyed opening up about the process for the first time on 'New Heights.' 'It's a couple months after the Super Bowl, I'm in Kansas City and I get a call from my mom. … She's like, 'You got your music,'' Swift recalled. 'I just very dramatically hit the floor for real. Honestly started bawling my eyes out, just weeping.' She said she immediately went to tell Travis, who was in the other room playing video games. 'I started crying too,' the Super Bowl champ chimed in. 'You know I'm a crier.' 'The Life of a Showgirl' was written during the Eras Tour During her days off in between three-and-a-half hour concert performances, Swift said she would meet up with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback to work on the new record. She previously worked with the two on '1989,' 'Reputation' and 'Red.' 'I would do like three shows in a row, I'd have three days off, I'd fly to Sweden,' she said, noting that she exclusively made the record in the Scandinavian country. 'I was physically exhausted at this point in the tour, but I was so mentally stimulated and so excited to be creating.' She previously wrote and released her 11th studio album, 'The Tortured Poets Department,' while also on the Eras Tour. The new album reflects the joy in her life 'My main goals were melodies that were so infectious that you're almost angry at it, and lyrics that are just as vivid but crisp and focused and completely intentional,' she said. She added that she and her collaborators specially spoke about preserving the storytelling elements of 2020's 'Folklore. Travis Kelce, who said he has already listened to the full album, teased that the new record is packed with 'upbeat, fun pop.' 'This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour,' Swift said. 'It just comes from like the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life, and so that effervescence has come through on this record.' 'The Life of a Showgirl' features only one guest artist Near the end of the interview, Swift showed off the front and back cover of her forthcoming record, reading out the 12-song tracklist as the Kelce brothers reacted. The big surprise: 'Espresso' singer Sabrina Carpenter is featured on the closing title track. The former Disney star previously opened for select dates of Swift's Eras Tour. Other 'The Life of a Showgirl' song titles include 'Elizabeth Taylor,' 'Father Figure' and 'CANCELLED!' There will be no bonus tracks Swifties know that the singer-songwriter has a penchant for treating fans with a variety of surprise material, whether it be the vault tracks off her re-recorded albums or the 31-song edition of 'The Tortured Poets Department,' titled 'The Anthology.' This time around, however, there will be no bonus tracks. 'I tend to love to write lots and lots of music, so it's a temptation to release lots of music,' she admitted. But with 'The Life of a Showgirl', Swift said she 'wanted to do an album that was so focused on quality and on the theme and everything fitting together like a perfect puzzle.' Taylor Swift is in her Sourdough Era Now that her tour is over, Swift is enjoying some rare downtime and rediscovering her hobbies. 'The sourdough's taken over my life in a huge way. I'm really talking about bread 60% of the time,' Swift said. 'There are sourdough blogs. There's a whole community of us.' She added that she's also been sewing baby clothes and blankets for Jason's young children. NFL players and pop stars aren't that different 'On paper, we actually kind of have a very similar job,' Swift said of her and Travis' careers. 'Our job is to entertain people for three-plus hours in NFL stadiums. When I'm there, it's called a dressing room; when Travis is there, it's called a locker room.' She and Travis bonded over their post-game/post-show rituals, with her beau joking that Swift may even do more recovery prep than him.

LL Cool J takes the mic for the 2025 MTV VMAs, where Lady Gaga rules nominations

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LL Cool J has snagged wins, co-hosted and performed atop the MTV Video Music Awards stage. Now, the Grammy-winning rapper-actor-author is going solo to host the 2025 awards ceremony. He's retaking the stage, this time without Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, with whom he co-hosted in 2022, the VMAs announced Thursday. He's also up for the best hip hop award for his single 'Murdergram Deux' featuring Eminem. The single is part of his most recent album, 'THE FORCE,' which released in September and was his first album in 11 years. LL Cool J is a longtime champion of the VMAs, having won his first Moon Person in 1991. He became the first rapper to receive the Video Vanguard Award, in 1997. He also performed in an all-star tribute to hip-hop's 50th anniversary in 2023 and a celebration for Def Jam Records' 40th anniversary last year. Here's everything you need to know about this year's MTV VMAs, so far. When are the MTV Video Music Awards? Gaga and Mars are followed by Kendrick Lamar with 10 nominations, ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter with eight each, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd with seven each and Billie Eilish with six.
