Nitish skips NITI Aayog meeting again

Time of India24-05-2025
Patna: CM
Nitish Kumar
, whose party JD(U) is a key ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), on Saturday skipped the 10th governing council meeting of the NITI Aayog, chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
His absence has triggered fresh speculation in the state's political circles.
Senior leaders of the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress described the chief minister's absence as "unfortunate" and suggested it carried "a deeper political message".
This is not the first time Kumar has missed a NITI Aayog meeting. He also skipped the 2023 governing council session. In 2024, the trend continued with Bihar being represented instead by deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha – both from the BJP.
The high-level meeting, held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, was themed 'Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat @2047'. It brought together chief ministers, lieutenant governors and Union ministers to discuss long-term development strategies.
However, Kumar's absence stood out, particularly as he leads a govt backed by the BJP. "The states which skipped the meeting were Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar and Puducherry," NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam told reporters in Delhi.
A senior NDA leader said the CM, accompanied by senior officials, arrived in Delhi on Saturday afternoon, by which time the meeting was nearly over.
Despite the political curiosity his absence sparked, neither the chief minister's office nor the Bihar govt offered any explanation on Saturday as to why the CM or the state refrained from attending.
Senior Congress leader Tariq Anwar described Kumar's decision as "significant.
"His decision to skip it sends a major political message especially given that the meeting was chaired by the PM," Anwar said.
RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha said the CM's absence suggested a shift in decision-making. "The NITI Aayog meeting is happening at a critical juncture. We heard that the CM is not attending. His priorities are set by other people these days," Jha told reporters.
NDA sources, however, confirmed that Kumar is expected to attend the meeting of chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of NDA-ruled states on May 25 to be chaired by PM Modi at the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi.
The NDA gathering precedes the PM's two-day visit to Bihar on May 29 and May 30, ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. It is seen as politically significant for both Bihar and the NDA allies in the state.
Speaking about the NDA meeting, deputy CM Samrat Choudhary said, "The Centre is extending all possible assistance to Bihar and Nitish Kumar will thank the PM for it. Several people-friendly projects like Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali are ongoing in Bihar under the leadership of the CM and these will be discussed in the meeting. The state will also make a presentation at the meeting."

Two cases filed in Maha against psephologist for misinformation

Two cases have been registered against psephologist Sanjay Kumar, co-director of Lokniti-CSDS (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies), in Nagpur and Nashik for allegedly spreading false information about voter data in Maharashtra through a social media post. Two cases filed in Maha against psephologist for misinformation It came a day after Kumar apologised for his post, which claimed a significant dip in voter numbers in two assembly seats in Maharashtra polls compared to the 2024 general elections, which were held nearly six months apart. 'Sanjay Kumar from CSDS, has posted misleading information of voters of 59-Ramtek AC for LS-2024 and MH LA-2024, FIR is registered against him. It is requested to all citizens to verify the info only from the ECI website,' the district election officer (DEO) Nagpur, said in a post on X on Wednesday. The DEO of Nashik posted a similarly-worded post, saying an FIR has been registered against Kumar for his 'misleading information' over Devlali assembly constituency. The FIRs against Kumar are registered under BNS sections 175 for publishing false election statements, 353(1)(b) for spreading false information causing public mischief, 212 for giving false information to a public servant, and 340(1)(2) for using forged documents as genuine. On Tuesday, Kumar in a post on X said: 'I sincerely apologize for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. Error occurred while comparing data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in row was misread by our data team. The tweet has since been removed. I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.' In his now-deleted post, Kumar had claimed that in the Ramtek assembly constituency, the number of voters decreased from 466,203 in the Lok Sabha polls to 286,931 during the assembly elections — a dip of 38.45%. "Draconian Act": Congress Slams Centre Over Constitution Amendment Bill

New Delhi: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday criticised the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill that sought to allow the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they were held on serious criminal charges. The Congress leader accused the ruling BJP of using its majority in Parliament to push through the bill with the intention of targeting the opposition. He called the move "draconian" and politically motivated. The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader called the bill a political weapon and said, "The intention of the ruling side to pass this bill using its majority is not right. This will be used as a tool to target the opposition. This is a draconian act." He further questioned the timing of the bill, linking it to ongoing debates over the allegation on the Election Commission of 'vote theft'. "At a time when questions are rising against the Election Commission, there is panic in the ruling party, and this issue has now been raised to divert attention from it?" Adhir Ranjan told ANI. Earlier in the day, slamming the BJP government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that legislation, if passed, will allow the ruling party at the Centre to register false cases against Chief Ministers of the opposition parties and it will shake the democratic foundations of the country. In a post on X, Mr Stalin said that the BJP Government has decided to "defile" the Constitution."The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform -- this is a Black Day and this is a Black Bill. 30-day arrest = Removal of an elected CM. No trial, no conviction -- just BJP's DIKTAT. This is how DICTATORSHIPS begin: Steal votes, Silence rivals and Crush States," wrote Mr Stalin while condemning the bill. The Tamil Nadu CM pointed out that the introduction of the said bill is the BJP's government diversion tactic to bring the bill at a time when it is facing allegations over "vote theft". "After the expose of #VoteTheft, the very mandate on which the Union BJP Government was formed is in serious question. Its legitimacy is doubtful. Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this expose. To do that, they have brought in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill," he said. Expressing faith in the judiciary, CM Stalin said that the Constitution Amendment bill will be struck down by the courts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bllls to a joint committee of Parliament.
