Kota Kinabalu: Jonathan Wong Kar Gee believes there's still room for improvement despite winning the gold medal in the long jump T11/T12 event on Saturday at the 9th Marrakech 2025 World Para Athletics Grand Prix held in Morocco. He recorded a distance of 6.62 metres (m) which was well below his personal best of 7.22m to take the gold medal ahead of second placed Alex Njeru. The Kenyan had to settle for the silver with 6.16m and in third place was fellow Malaysian Mohd Saifuddin Ishak with 5.86m. 'I feel very proud that I was able to win the gold medal, but performance wise I think I can do better in the next competition. 'I have to improve on my run-up. I am not very consistent right now. Sometimes I run fast and sometimes a bit slower. 'I had a few fault jumps which I think were well over seven metres, so I need to improve on this area to build up my confidence. 'However, this was only my first competition of the year. It was just like a preparation or a warm-up for me. 'The next competition is not confirmed yet, hopefully I can join the World Championship in India in September,' he said upon his arrival from Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. The 34-year-old had earlier expressed his intention to compete for the third time at the next Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. He missed out on the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics when he finished in fourth place in the T-12 men's long jump event. He was on course for the podium finish with the distance of 6.85m recorded in his first and final attempts until Argentine Fernando Vazquez's final jump of 6.88m shattered his dream. Meanwhile, Jonathan was welcomed by Sabah Sports Council deputy director (Para-sector) Alissa Alha and other officials. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Hard for Brazilian club Recife to lure Bergson away from JDT
KUALA LUMPUR: The talk is that Brazilian club, Sport Recife, are trying to bring Bergson Da Silva home, but the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) star has more reasons to stay in Malaysia. Recife, who compete in the top flight of the Brazilian league, have reportedly made contact with Da Silva. Brazilian journalist Antonio Gabriel wrote on X: "Striker Bergson (34) is on Sport Recife's radar. The Rubro-Negro club has enquired about the player, who has been with Johor in Malaysia since 2020, scoring 152 goals in 137 matches." Since joining JDT in February 2021, Da Silva has plundered 150 goals in 141 appearances, and is just one short of breaking Indra Putra Mahayuddin's all-time Super League scoring record. But beyond club success, Da Silva is also close to qualifying for Malaysian naturalisation under Fifa's five-year residency rule. His contract with JDT runs until the end of this year, putting him just months away from being eligible to play for Harimau Malaya. A move now to Recife would reset that clock entirely. Gabriel said Recife's biggest hurdle isn't just convincing Bergson, but matching his wages. "Among the main challenges is the player's high salary demand. What Da Silva earns in Malaysia is significantly more than what Sport Recife can offer," he said. With national team prospects within reach and more glory with JDT beckons, it's hard to see Da Silva leaving the Southern Tigers now.

Malaysia end SEA swim meet with three golds
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian swimmers made amends on the final day of the Southeast Asia (SEA) Championships in Singapore yesterday by splashing to three golds. Chong Xin Lin finally won a gold, in the girls' 16-18 50m backstroke with 29.42s, which also broke the long standing meet record of 29.76s set by Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Anh Vien in 2014. Indonesia's Alexandra Chelsea won silver (29.59s) and Vietnam's Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Tien was third (29.62s). Xin Lin had to settle for silver in the 200m backstroke on Thursday and fourth place in the 100m backstroke on Wednesday. National swimming coach Eric Anderson said: "Xin Lin swam the second fastest ever time in Malaysia for 50m backstroke and that's just an indication of where she is headed with the Thailand Sea Games in December. "Her peers are all there and it's all part of the learning process as we prepare for the Sea Games," he said. It was at the same pool in the Singapore National Championships last year, when Xin Lin clocked 29.33s to break the national record of 29.51s set by Caroline Chan back in 2016. Malaysia bagged two more golds yesterday. Ch'ng Saw Huai won the boys' 14-15 200m butterfly gold (2:09.21s) and Sheamus Chew won the boys' 13 and below 100m freestyle (56.06s).
