New survey in Bangladesh reveals strong political disillusionment in youth
The youth demographic, which is likely to play a decisive role in the polls, found out that over 76.78% of eligible young voters had expressed an intent to cast their ballot in the upcoming polls.
However, the report also drew attention to widespread political disillusionment prevailing throughout the country. Despite high voter intent, 82.7% of respondents said they had no interest in engaging in politics, citing fears of political violence and a perceived lack of ethics among political actors.
The call for change is driven by frustration with the status quo. The survey found that young people are most concerned about ending corruption and nepotism, improving the education system, and expanding job opportunities, areas they believe the political establishment has neglected.
Another area of youth's focus has been on the economy, infrastructure development, end of religious radicalism, and a systemic reform of institutions, as the optimism which once came about last year following the July Uprising has only soured the mood further now, with many believing that even a democratically elected government is unlikely to bring any concrete change, owing to the nation's fragile environment. BCD warns advocates against online, YouTube solicitation
New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) The Bar Council of Delhi has issued a stern notice cautioning advocates against advertising or soliciting legal work through social media platforms. The regulatory body has flagged the increasing trend of lawyers and self-proclaimed 'legal influencers' posting promotional videos, client interactions, and other content online, which it deemed unethical and in violation of Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules. While issuing a notice, BCD Chairman Surya Prakash Khatri emphasised the seriousness of the matter and stated that such conduct undermines the dignity and sanctity of the legal profession and poses a risk of spreading misinformation, particularly when done by individuals who lack proper legal qualifications or licensing. The Council's notice directs all advocates currently engaged in such activities to take down their content with immediate effect. Failure to comply, it warned, could invite disciplinary action under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, including suspension or cancellation of their license to practice law. The Bar Council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the ethical standards of the legal profession and cautioned members of the Bar to refrain from indulging in direct or indirect forms of advertisement or self-promotion that could erode public trust in the legal system. Russian official expresses confidence dialogue can resolve US-Russia differences amid Witkoff visit
Moscow, Aug 6 (UNI) Russian President Vladmir Putin's economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev has expressed confidence that Moscow and Washington can resolve their differences through dialogue, reports RT. The statement comes as US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff held a meeting with Putin, with the former holding talks with the Russian leader on reaching a settlement with Ukraine over Trump's threats to impose 100% sanctions on Moscow, should it fail to reach a peace settlement with Kyiv. For its part, Russia has downplayed the threat of sanctions, stating that its long years of having stayed under Western embargo has made it develop an 'immunity' to sanctions, adding that additional sanctions mean nothing for its economy, even as the US President has acknowledged Moscow's ability to skirt past the sanctions. The Kremlin has also mocked the POTUS' deadline manoeuvre, with former Russian President and now Chief of National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, having engaged in a furious battle of words with Trump over the issue, resulting in the US' deployment of nuclear submarines. In a post on X on Wednesday, Dmitriev, who is CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), thanked his followers for their 'kind wishes for a successful visit of Steve Witkoff to Moscow,' adding that 'Dialogue will prevail.' Dmitriev was also part of the Russian delegation which welcomed Witkoff at Vnukovo Airport, and the two were later seen walking through Zaryadye Park near the Kremlin. Later in the day, Witkoff held face-to-face talks with Putin, which lasted around three hours. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, speaking on the Putin-Witkoff talks noted that both sides managed to hold a constructive and productive conversation which focused on the Ukraine conflict and 'prospects for US-Russia strategic cooperation.'
