Both Houses adjourned for fourth day amid Opposition uproar over Bihar SIR
As soon as the Lok Sabha reconvened at 2 pm, and the presiding officer, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, called for the proceedings of the House, Opposition members entered into the well of the House holding placards in support of their demands and started raising slogans.
Tenneti urged the members to return to their seats and participate in the discussion on the bill related to the Scheduled Tribes of Goa, which was due today.
He said that the bill was also listed for discussion yesterday, but due to the commotion caused by Opposition members, the discussion could not take place.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said that an important bill related to the Scheduled Tribes is listed for discussion and passage, but the Opposition was not concerned about the interests of the Scheduled Tribes.
He said that this is a significant bill as for the first time, a legislation has been introduced to provide representation to the Scheduled Tribes of Goa.
The presiding officer said that yesterday as well, the Goa State Scheduled Tribe Representation Re-adjustment Bill, 2014 was brought for discussion and passage, but the House was not allowed to function. He added,
"As long as you keep displaying placards, the proceedings of the House cannot continue. All of you please return to your seats and participate in the discussion on the bill".
Due to the continued protest by Opposition members, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until Friday.
Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm after Opposition members created ruckus demanding rollback of SIR process in Bihar.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha too was adjourned for the day after Opposition party members protested against the SIR of the electoral roll in Bihar and created uproar.
When the House reconvened at 2 pm, Deputy Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalita called on AIADMK's M Thambi Durai to begin the discussion on the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025. As soon as Durai stood up to speak, Opposition members rose from their seats and came near the chair, shouting slogans in protest against the SIR in Bihar.
As the uproar escalated, BJP's Laxmikant Bajpai raised a point of order under Rule 235 and demanded action against Opposition members.
In response, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the House, Pramod Tiwari, also cited rules and said that the Leader of the Opposition was not being given an opportunity to speak in the House.
Kalita appealed to the Opposition members to return to their seats and urged for maintaining order in the House. When his appeals had no effect, he adjourned the proceedings for the rest of the day.

The Commission's message comes as it carries out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, ahead of state assembly elections due later this year. The drive, which saw a 99.8 per cent participation, collected around 7.24 crore registration forms. The revision led to the removal of approximately 65.6 lakh names from the rolls, mainly classified as dead, duplicate, migrated, or untraceable, leaving 7.24 crore electors in the draft list released on August 1. Opposition parties have slammed the exclusion of Aadhaar, Voter ID (EPIC), and ration cards as valid documents in the voter roll revision process. The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case and has warned it will intervene if it detects large-scale removal of eligible voters. Earlier, the Court directed the Election Commission to accept these commonly used IDs during the SIR. Coming back to the match, the fifth Test match delivered high drama as England, chasing a formidable target of 374, were in cruise control mode. With tons from Joe Root and Harry Brook, the hosts crossed the 300-run mark and seemed well on course for a memorable win. A stunning reversal followed. Mohammed Siraj delivered a fiery spell, tightening the screws when it mattered most. England's batting order crumbled under pressure, losing their last seven wickets for only 66 runs. 'Fight political battles outside court, not here', CJI tells Karnataka minister
New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court today dismissed an appeal filed by Karnataka Minister Shivananda S. Patil, challenging a Karnataka High Court decision that had quashed his defamation case against BJP MLA Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal. Patil's counsel sought to contest the High Court's order dated September 28, 2024, which had set aside the proceedings, citing non-compliance with the mandatory procedure under the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). It was alleged that Yatnal made defamatory remarks against Patil during a rally ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, tarnishing his image despite his Cabinet status. At the outset, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, sitting with Justice K. Vinod Chandran, made his stance clear and said, 'Fight political battles outside the court, not here.' When the lawyer tried to press the appeal, the CJI responded curtly, 'So what?' and imposed a cost of Rs 25,000, which he later escalated to Rs 1 crore. However, the cost was waived after the lawyer requested withdrawal of the appeal. The Karnataka High Court had ruled that the magistrate failed to follow due process under Section 223 of the BNSS. According to the provision, a magistrate must first examine the complainant and any witnesses under oath and provide an opportunity for the accused to be heard before taking cognisance. The High Court found these steps were skipped, invalidating the trial process. SC pulls up Rahul for 'Chinese thrashing our soldiers' remark
. NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi , the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, got a rap on his knuckles on Monday from the Supreme Court for his 2022 statement - Chinese are "thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh" - while criticising the government for its handling of the Galwan Valley clash at the LAC. "If you were a true Indian, you would not say all this," the apex court told him. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A G Masih lambasted Rahul for making allegations that China captured 2,000 sq km of Indian territory and asked him whether he was present there. It made it clear to him that as leader of opposition he cannot go on saying whatever he wants. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Gandhi, defended him saying, "if he cannot say these things which are published in the Press, he cannot be a leader of opposition". However, he agreed that the statement could have been worded better. SC's censure came during the hearing on Rahul's plea for staying a defamation case filed against him over his claim about Indian jawans having been walloped by the Chinese during the Galwan standoff. After the hearing, the court stayed the defamation proceedings against him but not before giving him an earful. "Tell, Dr Singhvi, how do you get to know that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory was occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material? Why do you make these statements without you were a true Indian, you would not say all this if there is a conflict at the border," the bench said.
