‘The Plague' Review: Joel Edgerton & Cast Of Young Newcomers Turn Summer Boys Camp Into A Psychological Nightmare
The Plague, a world premiere today in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, may be fiction, but it brought back vivid, not-so-pleasant memories of my days in elementary school and at the Catalina Island Boys Camp, where every 12-year-old in my cabin nicknamed the kid we labeled a chronic liar and outcast as Skag. We didn't believe this extremely awkward kid about anything including that his father had won four Oscars, as he kept bragging, but the fact is after I got home I discovered it was true. If only we had cell phones and IMDb in those days, Skag might not have become the target of our obsessive bullying.
And then in the fifth grade, my entire class zeroed in on one poor girl named Karen who we nicknamed Ledbutt. We all secretly even cut her photo out of our copy of the class photo, something I still have to this day to remind me childhood can be terribly cruel. I too was singled out. It happens.

Set at an all-boys water polo summer camp, The Plague is on the precipice of horror, but this is no Friday the 13th. Bullying and targeting are their own brand of horror, so I would call this film more of a frightening psychological drama centering on the 12-year-olds aiming for acceptance and conformity at the expense of one lone outcast. It came from writer-director Charlie Polinger's own summer camp experiences, even though the characters here are all made up. It is far less intense horror than Carrie and more along the lines of a Lord of the Flies, the book turned twice into a movie and one every schoolboy read before The Lord of the Rings took over.
Set in 2003, 12-year-old Ben (Everett Blunck) finds himself on the edge of manhood and in a moral crisis as he tries to fit in with other campers but has some guilt about partaking in what they call the 'plague,' a fictional malady they collectively decide to create for one unsuspecting camper whom they claim has been stricken with this awful affliction. If you should even touch him, you will get the plague. Chubby and socially inept Eli (Kenny Rasmussen) is the object of this disaffection because he has severe acne on his face and back — and also because, well, he is kinda weird, not at all like the 'normal' kids including bully-in-chief, Jake (Kayo Martin), the pathetic terrorizing ringleader of this bad behavior. Ben increasingly is troubled but also wants to be one of the group, and his doubts are spelled out in his eyes.
Trying to keep order is Daddy Wags, the camp counselor nicely played in a supporting role by Joel Edgerton, who also is a producer. But he can only do so much, and you know boys will be monsters given half the chance. In the Trump era, now it is worse since we have sort of license for this type of behavior considering the influencers from the White House on down. The Plague looks like it inevitably is going to fall down the rabbit hole of standard horror tropes at any moment, but this movie is smarter than that and always keeps it credible, tough as it is to watch.
Casting director Rebecca Dealy's cast largely is made up of first-time film actors who are 12 or 13 themselves. Notably this is an exceptional debut for Rasmussen and Martin, neither having ever made a film but completely natural here, as is Blunck, who is haunting as Ben. Polinger knows just how to get an authentic performance out of each of these kids, plus he has added some almost surreal visual touches such as synchronized dancing scenes in the pool that add a layer of eerieness to the proceedings.
Producers in addition to Edgerton are Lizzie Shapiro, Lucy McKendrick, Steven Schneider, Roy Lee and Derek Dauchy.

Guillermo Del Toro's ‘Frankenstein': Everything To Know About Netflix Monster Movie
Oscar Isaac in Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." Director Guillermo del Toro is unveiling the first trailer for his version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at Netflix TUDUM 2025 on Saturday evening. Here's what we know so far about the film. As his films Cronos, Hellboy and its sequel, Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water have shown, del Toro has long shown his passion for monsters and mystical creatures. In fact, the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water — which earned del Toro Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture as one of the film's producers — was an ode to the famed Universal Studios monster movie The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Like the Universal monster movies, del Toro's movies have skewed more toward sympathetic creatures rather than horrifying beings and it appears that his take on Frankenstein will keep in that tradition as it relates to the Monster. Discussing his approach to Frankenstein at the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France earlier this month, del Toro, in conversation with his frequent composer Alexandre Desplat, said (via Variety), 'Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes? For the first time, I considered that. 'It's an emotional story for me. It's as personal as anything,' del Toro added. "I'm asking a question about being a father, being a son… I'm not doing a horror movie — ever. I'm not trying to do that.' Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac in Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." Oscar Isaac stars as Dr. Victor Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, while Mia Goth stars as his wife, Elizabeth. Jacob Elordi also stars as Frankenstein's Monster. The cast of Frankenstein also includes Christoph Waltz, Ralph Ineson, Charles Dance, Burn Gorman, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery and Charles Dance. Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein does not have a trailer yet, but that is expected to be released at Netflix TUDUM 2025 on Saturday evening. Previously, a snippet of footage could be seen during a teaser trailer for the TUDUM event. Netflix previously announced that Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein will be released in November, but the streamer did not give a specific release date. In all likelihood, the film's release date will be revealed at Netflix TUDUM 2025 on Saturday. CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 18: Guillermo Del Toro poses during the "La Leçon De Musique Alexandre Desplat ... More & Guillermo Del Toro" photocall at the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 18, 2025 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Corbis via Getty Images) Since the release of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is in November, Netflix appears to be positioning the film for an awards season run. As such, expect Netflix to give the film a qualifying theatrical run for the Oscars and other awards season bodies. After that, the film will premiere exclusively on Netflix. Netflix previously gave the director's stop-motion animated film, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, a theatrical run before it premiered on Netflix. The film went on to earn the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2023. Mexican band Grupo Firme cancels festival appearance because of US visa issue
Mexican band Grupo Firme cancels festival appearance because of US visa issue The Tijuana-based regional music group is among a growing number of Mexican musicians who have had abrupt visa issues. Show Caption Hide Caption Spotted: Pedro Pascal in economy class on his way to Cannes Actor Pedro Pascal went viral for his comments on U.S. immigration at Cannes Film Festival. The Mexican band Grupo Firme canceled their headlining June 1 performance at a California music festival because the group said their visas were currently in an 'administrative process' to enter the country. The Tijuana-based regional Mexican music group is among a growing number of Mexican musicians who have had abrupt visa issues, sometimes for alleged ties to drug cartels, during the second Trump administration. It wasn't immediately clear what caused visa issues for Grupo Firme to enter the country for their June 1 performance at La Onda Fest, in Napa Valley. The band offered no further details aside from a May 30 post on Instagram Stories. The post said the United States Embassy currently had visas in an 'administrative process' for bandmates and their record label, Music VIP. This made it 'impossible' for them to attend the Mexican music festival. 'We are sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause,' the post said in Spanish. 'We appreciate your understanding and, above all, the love of our fans in the United States.' In an emailed response, the Department of State said visa records are confidential by law, so they couldn't comment on the case. Officials didn't respond to questions about the basis for the visa issue, or about the 'administrative process' the band described. The group said they would share news of their return to the United States when they can make new plans. Mexican singer Julión Álvarez said he had his visa revoked ahead of a sold-out May 24 show at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys. In 2017, Álvarez had his visa revoked after being accused of ties to a drug trafficker, though he denied this. He was taken off a list in 2022, and he was in the country as recently as April to perform three sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, the State Department revoked the visas for Los Alegres del Barranco, after the band displayed an image of Mexican drug lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho,' at a concert in Mexico in late March. The group had an American tour planned. On X, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed the department canceled Los Alegres' work and tourist visas for "glorifying" Oseguera Cervantes, who is head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. In 2021, Grupo Firme won a Latin Grammy for best banda album. The group is known for songs such as "Ya Supérame" and "Cada Quién." But in February, the group canceled a festival performance in Mazatlán, in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, after being threatened by a suspected drug cartel. The threat reportedly came in the form of a narcomanta – a banner used by drug cartels to communicate messages – displayed on a bridge, as well as a severed human head found nearby, addressed to Grupo Firme. Grupo Firme has sought to distance itself from music known as narcocorridos, or drug ballads, that have gained an international following, coinciding with a global rise in the popularity of regional Mexican music. States in Mexico have sought to ban the subgenre of corridos, or Mexican ballads. In April, Grupo Firme's lead singer, Eduin Caz, said the group doesn't perform narcocorridos. Their music, focused on love and heartbreak, 'has fed us very well,' he said at a press conference. La Onda Fest was set to take place May 31 to June 1, with Grupo Firme slated as the last act on the second day. The festival said Tito Double P, a corridos singer from Sinaloa, would replace Grupo Firme.
