Broc Feeney sprints to Supercars lead with Tassie wins
Triple Eight young gun Feeney twice upstaged Tickford rival Thomas Randle in the front row to take out Saturday's two 120km sprints at Symmons Plains Raceway.
He first used the side draft on the inside to slingshot himself ahead of pole-sitter Randle in the opener, winning by a massive 7.937 seconds.
The 22-year-old then fought off a surprise challenge from Nick Percat to complete his Saturday sweep from pole and celebrate his 100th race in style.
He jumps teammate Will Brown and Tickford's Cam Waters to take a 13-point lead in the standings, after starting the weekend in fourth.
"Just shows how close the championship is at the moment," Feeney said.
"The championship has been so up and down to start this year, so I'm just trying to find some more consistency.
"I didn't really think that it would mean much in that second race today, with the 100, but with five laps to go, I was like, 'Oh, this is actually pretty cool'."
Randle, still looking for his maiden career win, finished second then fourth across the two 50-lap races.
Matt Stone Racing's Percat jumped the field following a strategic pit stop to finish runner-up in the second sprint, claiming his 19th career podium.
Waters, fourth in the opener, snuck into the top three using the same move, with help from teammate Randle.
"I owe him (Randle) a beer for letting me through," Waters said.
"Definitely, I'll repay the favour for him down the track."
Feeney's second race was almost derailed when Randle, in a near replica of last year's incident, locked his wheels coming into the infamous hairpin at turn four.
But instead of ploughing into the rival Camaro, Randle managed to regain control.
Randle finished 18th after incurring a 15-second penalty for the incident last year, with Feeney made to accept 15th.
The Tickford driver was later barred by Triple Eight team manager Mark Dutton from entering their garage to apologise to Feeney after the race.
Brad Jones Racing driver Bryce Fullwood, after following Randle for his third-ever podium earlier, finished the second sprint in 14th.
Defending champion Brown endured a frustrating outing, placing fifth and 11th.
Feeney will have a chance to complete his weekend sweep when drivers return for race 13 qualifying at 9.35am (AEST) on Sunday.

'Big change': Supercars icon locks in plans for 2026
Lowndes confirmed in March that 2025 would mark the final year of his two-decade partnership with Ford-bound Triple Eight. The veteran has now signed a two-year deal with Team 18, the outfit that General Motors selected to replace Triple Eight as its Supercars homologation team. The 51-year-old will spearhead the Chevrolet Camaro wildcard entry at Supercars endurance races from 2026, mentoring a young rookie driver. Lowndes has competed in a staggering 31 editions of the Bathurst 1000, having won the famed race on seven occasions. "Joining Team 18 was the right move for me, being the new homologation team and my strong relationship with GM," Lowndes said in a statement. "It's going to be a big change - joining a new team after so many years. "But there are a lot of familiar faces in there. "It's an exciting time ahead ... the Supercheap Auto Wildcard program has grown from strength to strength during my time at Triple Eight.
