The wide release of "Superman" is a week away and, unsurprisingly, the PG-13 film looks to be a decidedly family-friendly affair. But the guy playing the Man of Steel, David Corenswet, thinks it would be a good idea if things eventually got a little bit edgier for Superman.
Speaking to Nerdist, Corenswet said that, in spite of resistance to the idea, he thinks Superman could work well in an R-rated project.

"One thing that excites me so much about [James Gunn's] vision for the DCU is the different genres and tones that the movies can take on," Corenswet said. "I know that people are skeptical that certain genres and characters can mix ... I would love to see this Superman in an R-rated project in a thing like 'Lanterns' where it's that 'True Detective' feel."
"I just think it can happen in spite of how bright and playful this version of the character is. I think there's room to be flexible. So, I'd be excited to see that."

Superheroes have not been complete strangers to R-rated movies. All three "Deadpool" entries were R-rated as was 2017's "Logan". But traditionally the studios have made sure to restrict R-rated material to darker characters like Wolverine and Deadpool.
Even last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine", the first "Deadpool' entry set in the MCU, made sure to keep Marvel's more family-friendly characters out of the mix.
Putting a traditionally family-friendly character like Superman in an R-rated project creates the potential for a number of issues, including for parents hoping to shield their children from more mature content.
If you introduce a character like Superman in a PG or PG-13 movie, for example, and then include him in an R-rated movie, parents are put in the position of explaining to their children why they can see one movie but not the other.
This is a question that James Gunn and Peter Safran will no doubt have to wrestle with some more as the DCU continues. Along with upcoming R-rated projects like "Peacemaker" Season 2 and "Lanterns", on the horizon is the body horror film "Clayface".
"Superman" releases in theaters on July 11. Tickets are on sale now. The film is written and directed by James Gunn. "Superman" stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.

Plane passenger tries to outsmart airline's luggage rule by doing the unthinkable with her suitcase: ‘She's so real for that'

They told her to check the bag — she checked them instead. A fierce flyer is going viral for muscling her suitcase into a carry-on sizer at a European airport — leaving airline staff stunned when the bag actually fit. The now-legendary shove came courtesy of TikTok user Arina (@summermken_official), who posted a video of herself forcefully wedging her luggage into a metal bag checker at the Vueling counter during a recent flight from Paris to London. 'Never give up, at least not on the sake of €200,' she wrote in the caption — and the internet agreed. The clip has racked up more than 10 million views since it was posted on July 22. 'They asked me to place my bag in the checker to confirm it met size requirements,' Arina told Newsweek. 'It seemed that they were just suspicious of the size of my bag since it didn't seem like carry-on luggage.' The Spanish low-cost carrier, like many budget airlines, has earned a reputation for eagle-eyed enforcement of size rules — and for slapping on sky-high baggage fees. Vueling charges up to €88 (about $96) at the airport if your bag doesn't fit their requirements. 'I was 100% sure that it would fit […] plus I measured it before buying and it fit the standards of the company,' she told the outlet. What followed was a now-iconic suitcase showdown: Arina is seen in the clip straining to push her bag into the checker — and then yanking it out with just as much effort. The Vueling employee? Gobsmacked. 'She seemed quite surprised that the suitcase actually fit,' Arina said. 'She said, with genuine shock, that I must be very strong… she clearly didn't expect it to fit at all.' TikTokers applauded her persistence — and side-eyed the airline. Spain's stingy sky carrier is notorious for hawk-eyed bag checks and nickel-and-diming travelers with sky-high luggage fees. Viacheslav Yakobchuk – 'Her face, that's 'I told you' face,' wrote one viewer in the comments section. 'She's so real for that,' another chimed in. 'Bro that's small carry-on too, I hate airlines,' added an additional user. As previously reported by The Post, one Ryanair passenger broke down in tears this week at Sofia Airport after being denied boarding when her bag wouldn't fit the airline's size limits. Despite shoving it into the sizer, she refused to pay extra, pleaded with border police, and ultimately collapsed to her knees sobbing as staff looked on. Overall, when it comes to budget flights, it's bend or break — and these women did both.

MAN OF STEEL Writer David S. Goyer Shares His Honest Thoughts on James Gunn's SUPERMAN — GeekTyrant

David S. Goyer, the writer behind 2013's Man of Steel , has shared his thoughts on James Gunn's new Superman movie, and it turns out he's a big fan of the fresh approach to the iconic DC hero. Goyer is no stranger to the DC Universe. He co-wrote Batman Begins and contributed to the stories for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises . He later teamed up with Zack Snyder on Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . His resume also includes Marvel projects like the Blade trilogy and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance , he even directed Blade: Trinity . Speaking with Cinemablend while promoting The Sandman , Goyer was asked about Gunn's optimistic take on Superman , which is a sharp contrast to the darker, more grounded tone he helped craft in the DCEU, and he loved it. 'I really liked it. People always assume that because I did The Dark Knight, I wouldn't like The Batman, but I really enjoyed it. Each generation gets the Superman they need. 'It felt like the pendulum with Man of Steel , obviously that was a much darker grounded version, and, and we're in a very different place, and I love that just the tagline that 'Kindness is punk rock.'' Goyer also praised the film's cast and Gunn's bold creative choices. 'I think that [David] Corenswet is incredibly appealing. I never would have thought to use Krypto, and Krypto was delightful. And then I think the guy that stole the show was Mr. Terrific, who Geoff Johns and I basically turned into a real character in the Justice Society.' 'So I was thrilled, I thought Mr. Terrific was awesome. Metamorpho, same. I love seeing a live action Metamorpho, and those are the kind of things that James Gunn can get away with, and God bless him because I love all these those weird quirky tertiary DC characters. I really enjoyed it and I was rooting for it, so I'm happy it's been successful.' Gunn's Superman has been embraced by critics and fans for its hopeful tone, even though it's facing challenges at the overseas box office. Gunn himself acknowledged the issue in a recent interview: 'It also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn't really helping us. So I think it's just a matter of letting something grow. But again, for us, everything's been a total win.' He added that this movie is only the beginning of something bigger: 'Having the movie come out and be something that has been embraced by people everywhere — this is just the seed of the tree that Peter [Safran] and I have been watering for the past three years. So to be able to have it start off so positively has been incredibly overwhelming.' Despite box office hurdles, Superman is poised to serve as the foundation for Gunn's DCU, following the turbulent final years of the DCEU. Fans are excited about what's coming next. What do you think of Goyer's comments? Do you like the new hopeful approach to Superman, or do you miss the darker, brooding version?
