10 Reasons to Watch the World Endurance Championship in 2025

Yahoo27-02-2025
The World Endurance Championship season begins in Qatar on February 28. Here's some of what we'll be watching at the opener and throughout the 2025 season.Porsche Penske Motorsport may be the winningest combo in the first two seasons of Hypercar and GTP, but it entered the 2025 WEC season's opening round of the Qatar 1812 km under pressure.
Although the team nearly swept the driver and manufacturer titles in both series last year before Toyota claimed the factory title in the WEC season finale, the pressure at Porsche is internal as well as external.
'The Porsche 963 is meant to continue the legacy of legendary endurance racing prototypes like the 917, 935, 956, 962 and 919 Hybrid,' said Thomas Laudenbach, the vice president of motorsport at Porsche. 'These icons from Weissach have shaped endurance racing for years. We intend to achieve the same with our current hybrid prototype.'
Laudenbach's words came on the eve of the new season and put a renewed focus on winning at Le Mans. The well-budgeted Porsche Penske combination is expected to continue in the WEC, despite the headwinds in German auto manufacturing. But the sooner a Le Mans victory arrives the better.Ferrari's 499P Hypercar has created a halo for the incomparable F80 road car that will generate billions by its sale to select customers. But work remains to be done after the back-to-back wins at Le Mans.
This year's red paint scheme is different, implying driver and manufacturer title aspirations in a classic Ferrari manner. There's more red showing on the sidepods in a deeper hue. This harkens back to the official factory team's last endurance racing championship in 1972 with the 312 PB in the World Championship of Makes.
During the offseason, the team concentrated on reliability updates in pursuit of both cars finishing in the points in each of this year's eight rounds.
A joker update was taken midway last season to improve cooling of the brakes and to add flicks below the headlights.
'We have made several organizational changes and continue to do so,' said Antonello Coletta, head of Ferrari's endurance programs. 'I believe we have taken a crucial step forward, particularly in our technical knowledge of the car.'Toyota, Porsche and Ferrari have dominated Hypercar. Will any of the teams break out of the second tier that last year included Alpine, BMW, Cadillac and Peugeot?
The odds currently look to favor BMW, whose M Hybrid V8 had a strong showing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January.
A BMW started on the pole in Daytona and was contending in the final hour. In the second season of the factory-run WEC program, BMW hopes to advance by having several drivers work in both the WEC and IMSA GTP events as often as the schedule permits to generate better development.
'We are convinced that this way joining our forces will bring us advantages,' said Andreas Roos, who directs the M Motorsport program.
The BMW driving lineup has gone from strength-to-strength with the addition of Kevin Magnussen, who joins Dries Vanthoor and Raffaele Marciello in the No. 15. The No. 20 will be shared by René Rast, Robin Frijns and Sheldon Van Der Linde.New to the grid is the much-anticipated Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH. Although the Cosworth V12-powered car is not a hybrid, the program is a mix of British, American and Canadian influences.
Ian James is at the 'heart' of the prototype team that has adopted the THOR acronym of its longtime full name of The Heart of Racing. An ex-patriot Brit, James initially organized Aston Martin's GT endurance racing program with Americans Gabe Newell and Yahn Bernier.
Much of the new THOR team is staffed by Canadian-based Multimatic as well as Aston Martin veterans like George Howard-Chappell. In addition to the Heart of Racing organization, drivers Alex Riberas, Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis are making the jump from GT to prototypes.
Can the Valkyrie, which will launch its IMSA campaign at Sebring, make an impression out of the box?
'We know we're starting two or three years behind our competition so the learning curve is going to be steep,' said WEC veteran Harry Tincknell, who did much of the early testing. The new Cadillac Racing-JOTA Sport alliance may surprise given Jota's 13 podiums at Le Mans in 11 seasons. But in making a transition from its privateer Porsche 963 entry, which won at Spa last year, the British team may not jell right away with the V-Series.R.
'We're narrowing the (path) to find the best window where the car operates,' said Sam Hignett, the team's director. 'We should roll into the (Qatar race) in pretty good shape.'
Jota consolidated its driving lineup while adding those with Cadillac experience—Sebastien Bourdais, Earl Bamber and Alex Lynn. Veterans of Chip Ganassi Racing's two seasons of V-Series.R entries, Boudais and Bamber are paired with Jota regular Jenson Button. Lynn joins Will Stevens and Norman Nato, who co-drove a Porsche 963 for Jota last year.
Given the amount of co-driving experience on other teams, Jota is counting on its drivers' chemistry and preferences coming together quickly. The computer-centric hybrids are very sensitive to inputs by drivers, whose engineers are constantly searching for improvements from session to session and during races. The initial entry list is expected to be out following the opening round at Qatar.
Porsche will have four 963s courtesy of one privateer entry by Proton Competition and an automatic entry resulting from Porsche Penske's GTP title. In addition to its two Jota entries, Cadillac would like to have four, which would mean acceptance of the IMSA teams of Action Express Racing and Wayne Taylor Racing.
BMW has had under consideration the addition of a third M Hybrid V8 from its IMSA team of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Including a privateer entry from AF Corse (pictured), Ferrari will again have three cars.
Depending on what comes to pass, the Le Mans entry could total 22 entries in the Hypercar class, 13 of them LMDh cars, including Alpine. The Ford Mustang GT3 and Corvette Z06 GT3.R are in their second season of flying the American colors in the WEC's highly competitive LMGT3 class consisting of 18 entries.
Ford Performance has revamped its lineup at Proton Competition, adding full season roles for Giammarco Levorato and Ben Tuck, drivers who impressed in parttime appearances last season. Levorato drove a Mustang GT3 to its first pole at the IMSA GTD class event at Virginia International Raceway.
Despite a fire in the No. 77 car that put it out of commission for most of the Prologue, expectations are high for the Mustang team on the heels of a GTD Pro victory with Multimatic in the Rolex 24.
'We had some productive days during the Prologue,' said Levorato, who will co-drive the No. 88.
Ben Keating, driving the TF Sport Corvette Z06 GT3.R, is the only American in any of the U.S. brands. Bronze-rated Keating won the GTE championship in 2023 with TF Sport, but is new to the Z06 GT3.R and the Lusail International Circuit.
'To have my name on the side of the car while racing a brand that I sell is pretty special for me,' said the Texas mega-dealer. 'I am nervous and excited, which are all the feelings you'd expect to have."
Keating is paired with silver-rated Jonny Edgar, an LMP2 champion in the ELMS, and platinum-rated Daniel Juncadella in the No. 33, a relatively strong driving lineup. The Iron Lynx and Iron Dames are each moving to different manufacturers this season.
After helping to develop the new Mercedes-AMG GT3, Iron Lynx is fielding two of them as the German manufacturer looks to make a return to Le Mans.
'We had the chance to test in different conditions (at the Prologue) in Qatar,' said WEC veteran Maxime Martin. 'A bit of everything that we will face in the races.'
The associated Iron Dames, a team within the Lynx team, has switched to the Porsche 911 GT3 R that will be run by Manthey Racing. Given the car's impressive performance last year under the Manthey banner, the Iron Dames are looking to repeat the ground-breaking victory of 2023, when the team's all-female drivers became the first to win a WEC race.
This season, Célia Martin is the bronze-rated driver. Rahel Frey (pictured), the team's silver, and Michelle Gatting, the gold, joined with Sarah Bovy to get the win in 2023.Ford Performance has taken its time when it comes to revealing the details of its LMDh entry into the Hypercar class for 2027. A design, a builder and a team have yet to be made final.
The plan is to concentrate on the WEC first and to headquarter the team in Europe. As expected, the engine will be a V8, although the choice of atmospheric or turbocharged is not clear.
It is fully expected the car will appear in IMSA's GTP class, although no formal acknowledgement has been made. The FIA and Automobile Club de l'Ouest officials recently announced streaming will be available in the U.S. for six of the eight rounds of this year's championship at the FIA WEC TV site.
The Le Mans 24-hour and Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of the Americas will be available on cable at Motor Trend, now operated by Discovery, which will also stream all the WEC events at Max.

Who's up, who's down in the FedEx Cup Playoffs after 18 holes at Wyndham Championship?

It's the tournament-within-the-tournament. The 2025 Wyndham Championship is the regular-season finale for the PGA Tour. It's also the Last Chance Saloon for those trying to find their way into the top 70 for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. That's a big change from a year ago, when the top 100 made the postseason. Now, the pressure is ratcheted up for those looking to extend their 2025 seasons. Who moved up in the projected FedEx Cup Playoff standings? There was no movement in or out of the top 30, which guarantees golfers a spot in the Tour Championship. But there some changes as it pertains to the top-50 cutoff. Joel Dahmen had the biggest jump up, as his first-round 61 on Thursday vaulted him from No. 101 all the way to No. 48, a leap of 53 spots. "I mean, I've had like three top-2s in my career. I don't know, four of 'em maybe? I mean, it's not even a thing, right?," he pondered after his first round. "Yeah, great to make the Playoffs, that would be unbelievable, give me a lot of time off this fall. We've got a baby coming so that would take some pressure off of that. The Playoffs are a bonus for me. I'm just going to go out and try to play good golf, and I guess if I play really well, then I get to play another week." Fellow pro Mark Hubbard confirmed that Dahmen was looking at vacation time these next few weeks more than a possible playoff spot. "My wife's actually in Jackson Hole right now, I think they're {the Dahmens] talking about maybe going there," Hubbard said. "I'm super jealous of both of them so I might just third wheel onto his trip, I don't know." Hubbard, who shot 65 on Thursday, is still on the outside at No. 82 but that's up from 98 from 24 hours ago. Jordan Spieth also did himself some favors. He was in the 50th spot ahead of this week and gave himself some breathing room after shooting 5-under 65 to move up to 46th. "I didn't have a great warmup this morning and it kind of translated, but it was nice to hang in there, get some breaks on the greens and be a couple under while I wasn't really, really feeling very good about my game," he said. "Then I started to kind of get in a nice rhythm to finish and hopefully carry that into the rest of the week." Christiaan Bezuidenhout has moved to the good side of the top-70 threshold from No. 74 to No. 66. The South African still has work to do but his Thursday 65 is a big step in the right direction. Who moved down in the projected FedEx Cup Playoff standings? On the flip side, a few golfers were moving the wrong direction at Sedgefield, but again, it's only been 18 holes, so there's still time. Min Woo Lee, not playing this week, went from No. 49 to No. 51. That's good enough to make next week but now has him out of the BMW. The bigger hit came to Ben An, who shot 2-under 68 and is tied for 64th at the Wyndham. That's an outcome that saw him fall from 69th to 72nd and out of the playoffs. Also sliding out was Matti Schmid, who was the bubble boy at the start of the tournament at No. 70. He's now 73rd. Big names still on the wrong side of top 70 in 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs standings There are three prominent names still outside the top 70 and time is starting to run out. Gary Woodland went back three spots from 75th to 78th; Adam Scott went from 85th to 84th; Max Homa was 106th and now he's 103rd.

Why Luxury Car Prices Are About to Get Brutal

Porsche and Aston Martin have begun raising prices in the United States as hopes of automotive-specific carveouts in trade deals fade, Reuters reports. The price hikes come shortly after a trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union that includes a 15%-tariff on EU-made cars beginning in August-lower than Trump threatened, but much higher than the 2.5% tariff from before President Donald Trump launched his global trade war. On Wednesday, Porsche said it had raised U.S. prices by 2.3% to 3.6% in July, Reuters reported, but said it had no plans to move production to the U.S. Bringing more manufacturing to the U.S. by making imports more expensive has been a primary aim of Trump's tariff policy. Aston Martin said it had begun "incremental" price increases in June, while issuing a profit warning based on U.S. tariffs and low demand in Asia. "This is not a storm that will pass," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said after the automaker cut its full-year profit target and reported a $462 million hit from tariffs in the first half of 2025. "We continue to face significant challenges around the world." Porsche isn't alone. Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche's parent brand Volkswagen all reported losses, issued profit warnings, or discussed raising prices in response to Trump's tariffs, Reuters noted. Even Ford, which claims around 80% of its vehicles are assembled domestically, reported an $800 million tariff penalty in its second-quarter results. European automakers had been hoping for tariff reductions specific to the auto industry, but the recent deal has eroded optimism, according to Reuters. Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius told analysts Wednesday that the automaker was assuming tariffs would remain at 15% for the time being. "For all intents and purposes, that global deal for now is it," Källenius said, adding that any side deals were "very uncertain." The Volkswagen Group last week, however, said it was hoping to negotiate lower U.S. tariffs based on investment commitments. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

How Much Is a Porsche, Really?

Generally recognized as the automotive equivalent of owning a Rolex, parking a Porsche in your garage is a rite of passage for anyone even mildly into cars once they reach a certain threshold of wealth. But how much coin do you need exactly? We've got the answers. Porsche's current lineup is diverse. You've got cars made for the track, and you've got cars made for family. Some Porsche models run on gas, some run on electricity, and others run on both. The Macan Electric and Panamera are all-new, while the 911, Taycan, and Cayenne have recently been refreshed. The gas Macan and 718 Boxster/Cayman have essentially been around for a decade, and, sadly, they're on their last legs. With the automaker recently hiking prices for 2025, here's how much each Porsche model will cost (at the very least) for the 2025 and 2026 model years. Base prices are what they are, but keep in mind that Porsche is a manufacturer notorious for pricing that can balloon fast once you start moving up the trim ladder and adding options. Leather-edged, carbon-fiber floor mats and colored seat belts ain't cheap, apparently. Porsche Macan: $66,950 Photo by: Porsche The new Macan Electric gets all the hype these days, but Porsche has decided to keep selling the old gas Macan alongside it (for now). This entry-level Porsche crossover has had a good number of updates over the years, but at its core, this car is more than 10 years old. Nonetheless, the 2026 gas Macan starts at $66,950 including a $2,350 destination charge, and it has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque—undercover hot-hatch specs with an undercover hot-hatch drive. Spring for the $80,350 S or $95,450 GTS for even more performance thanks to a V-6 making 375 and 434 hp, respectively. Read Our Review Porsche 718: $77,395 Photo by: Porsche Now, for some fun stuff. The 2025 Porsche 718 Cayman starts at $77,395, including $1,995 for destination, while the drop-top 718 Boxster goes for $79,595. Those come with the 300-horsepower 2.0-liter flat-four. S models crank it up to 350 hp for $12,500 more, while the acclaimed GTS 4.0 variants really start cooking with a 4.0-liter flat-six making 394 hp. The starting price for the Cayman GTS 4.0 is $105,395. The halo GT4 RS and Spyder, meanwhile, go for $173,395 and are, by all accounts, worth every single penny—if you can get an allocation. As of this writing, 2025 is set to be the final year for this generation of the Boxster and Cayman, as Porsche previously confirmed that production is winding down in October. An all-electric successor has been in the works and teased for some time now, but given the uncertainty around electric car mandates, questionable demand for iconic performance vehicles being reinvented as EVs, and Porsche's own business model that self-admittedly 'no longer works,' I wouldn't put my eggs in any one basket when it comes to the future of the 718 line. Read Our Review Porsche Macan Electric: $79,995 Photo by: Porsche If you'd like the fancy, new Macan Electric, though, prepare to pay at least $79,995, including a $1,995 destination charge. That gets you into the single-motor base EV good for 355 horsepower with launch control, as well as 315 miles of range. This one hits 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds. For reference, the base gas Macan does it in six. Speed-demon Macan Electric buyers will want the 630-horse dual-motor Turbo, which gets from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and goes for $111,095 to start. Range stands at 288 miles for both that version and the mid-level, 509-hp 4S. Read Our Review Porsche Cayenne: $91,150 Photo by: Porsche Step up to Porsche's bigger 2026 Cayenne crossover , and it'll cost $91,150, including $2,350 for destination. Not quite as old as the gas Macan, this car got a mid-cycle refresh for 2024 that brought new screens inside, tweaked exterior styling, and upgraded powertrains, including the return of a V-8 in the Cayenne S. The base model uses a 3.0-liter V-6 making 348 horsepower, but cylinders and power (and price) increase with S, GTS, E-Hybrid, and Turbo models. Slanted-roof Coupe variants generally go for 5 to 6 grand more than a regular Cayenne with the same powertrain. The big daddy Turbo GT with 650 hp, rubber-band performance tires, and a Lamborghini Urus-baiting chip on its shoulder goes for more than 210 grand. Read Our Review Porsche Taycan: $106,250 Photo by: Porsche What the Panamera originally did for four-door Porsches, the Taycan did for electric ones. Porsche introduced the Taycan in 2019, and gave it a significant update for 2025, adding a bigger battery and, in turn, more range, as well as the more powerful and efficient rear motor from the Macan Electric. A base 2026 Taycan starts at $106,250, including $2,350 for destination. That buys a single-motor car making 402 horsepower, good for 274 miles of range (up from the 208-mile base pre-refresh). Taycan 4, 4S, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S models all have dual motors, more power, and the requisite price increase,, but it culminates with the nutty Taycan Turbo GT. That one makes 1,019 hp, gets from zero to 60 in 2.1 seconds with the Weissach Package, and costs more than $240,000. Read Our Review Porsche Panamera: $112,450 Photo by: Porsche The newest model in Porsche's lineup at the moment, the very recently redesigned third-gen 2026 Porsche Panamera , starts at $112,450 with $2,350 of that going toward destination. Easily the most elegant-looking car in its lineage, the Panamera comes standard with a 2.9-liter V-6 making 348 horsepower and a 0-60 time of five seconds flat. E-Hybrid models add electricity while a GTS throws in a mighty 493-hp V-8. A top-of-the-line Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, meanwhile, uses both to produce a total of 771 hp, a 60-mph sprint of just 2.8 seconds, and a price tag north of $240,000. Read Our Review Porsche 911: $134,650 Photo by: Porsche Porsche's perennial thorn in the side of every other sports car that ever existed starts at $134,650 for 2026, including a $2,350 destination charge. Very recently refreshed, that price gets you into a base Carrera with a revamped flat-six engine making 388 horsepower and getting from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. That may not sound like much in the context of modern, six-figure performance cars, but make no mistake: even in base form, the 992.2 is transcendent to drive. More analog T, more powerful S, and newly hybrid GTS models are rungs on the ladder approaching $190,000 to start. The vaunted, track-ready GT3 goes for $234,550, and even though Porsche hasn't revealed Turbo 992.2 models, expect those to be priced in the same general ballpark.
