Fantasy football: New QB-coach combo could pay dividends in 2025
Whispering is considered a high achievement — more knowledgeable than all others in a particular field. So, when Liam Coen was referred to as the Quarterback Whisperer in 2022, Jaguars fans and fantasy football managers alike turned their attention to Trevor Lawrence. Could this finally be his breakout season?

When fantasy managers drafted Baker Mayfield in the 14th round in 2023, few of them knew that he had been touched by a football angel. After being traded from Carolina to Los Angeles in 2022, Mayfield connected with Coen, who was serving as the Rams assistant quarterbacks coach.
The two worked closely together, and over a five-game stretch, Coen's 'whispering' helped Mayfield become an efficient NFL quarterback and someone who was even fantasy-worthy.
Mayfield took what he learned to Tampa Bay in 2023 and posted career-best numbers in passing yards, passing touchdowns and completion percentage. He was so efficient that it opened up his downfield passing to levels no one expected.

Then, when Mayfield reunited with Coen in 2024, Mayfield's numbers went off the charts. Not only did he best his career highs in passing yards and touchdowns, but his 71.4 percent completion rate was highest in the league of any quarterback who played in 12 or more games. His 108.1 QB rating ranked third. Coen's work with Mayfield was lauded throughout NFL circles, and when it came time to find a new head coach, it was one of the primary reasons the Jaguars made him their No. 1 target.

Fantasy Football DVQ: The only draft rankings you need
The latest incarnation of the Fantasy Madman's football rating system has arrived. The nuts and bolts have been tweaked and strengthened, the breadth of the database was expanded, some ingredients were added to the soup, and some that were souring the stew were removed. So we're leaner and more flavorful. Now allow us to serve you the latest helping of the Draft Value Quotient (DVQ).
The DVQ is a system that rates players across the board, balancing value based on positional depth. A player's DVQ rating represents the point in the draft where projected production meets draft value. Each draft slot is assigned a value for expected production, which descends at a constant rate (same amount of expected points substracted from each descending pick). However, a player's real-world production forms an arc (steep fall at top, then flattening out), therefore there are gaps in the ratings. Example: The top player might have a 1.0 DVQ, but the second-ranked player might have a DVQ of 13.3. Deeper in the draft pool, instead of big gaps, players will only be separated by percentage points.
So saddle up, study up, then queue up a draft, and take a ride with the DVQ.
It has been a rough ride for Lawrence throughout his four-year NFL career. His rookie campaign was marred by the Urban Meyer era in Jacksonville, and most gave him a mulligan.

He blossomed under Doug Pederson in 2022, but then took a slight step back in Year 3.
The underlying metrics seemed clean, but his decision-making was questioned as he threw 14 interceptions. Last season was marred by injuries and he played in just 10 games. But there is no doubting his overall talent, and now teamed up with Coen, the highly coveted breakout is here.
Those who have been burned by Lawrence in the past are still harboring a grudge, and that is just fine. His ADP is right around 140, which puts him as QB20 in most drafts, a veritable bargain if you believe Coen can 'fix' him.

Without Coen, we've seen completion percentages better than 60 percent, we've watched Lawrence throw for over 4,000 yards, and we've even seen him rush for more than 300 yards with multiple touchdowns.
Think about the growth we witnessed with Mayfield, and now imagine the possibilities for Lawrence.
You don't have to draft him as your No. 1 quarterback, but if you wait on the position and draft two mid- to late-round guys, he certainly could be by season's end.

Ex-Giants RB is retiring at age 30
Running back Matt Breida is planning to retire after seven seasons in the NFL, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. According to ESPN, the Miami Dolphins recently requested a workout with the 30-year-old, but he declined. Breida spent his career with the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. Over 98 games in his career, he rushed for 2,652 yards and nine touchdowns. Here is what Jerry Jones said today, walking off the field in Oxnard, another day in which Parsons did not practice, but he was somewhere near the fields. Asked if there is a deadline, this is from Todd Archer at ESPN, whether Micah would play September 4th against the Eagles. Jerry Jones said, no, not at all. You don't have deadlines when you're playing under a contract. In other words, dude, not only are you under contract, oh by the way, I have two franchise tag years if I really want to use them. Charles Robinson, it was August 1st, if memory serves, when Micah Parsons hit send on a three-page iPhone notes post saying, see you, I'm out of here. Are we any closer to a resolution, because I cannot believe he's gonna get traded. So I'll ask you guys this. Jerry's got a Netflix program coming up, right? And he's the master of promotion, and he has said in the past, Jerry has said, when it gets quiet, I like to stir it up a little bit. Like when it gets quiet around our team, and all of us, we spent, I spent 25 years around NFL teams and all I hear is, we want it to be quiet. And he's on the other end of the spectrum. It gets quiet, he gets itchy, right? Like he wants to get thrown out of an Apple, Applebee's when it gets quiet. That's Jerry Jones. So, so, is there a chance, and it was funny because the, the general manager posed this to me. He said at one point, Is there any shot? They know they're gonna pay him. They they know we're gonna pay them $45 million a season. We're gonna, we're gonna trump all the numbers. But is there a chance that Jerry is doing this to keep the Cowboys constantly talked about leading into this Netflix series that's coming out about Jerry Jones. And at the time, I was like, nah, I'm like, he's pretty crazy. I'm like, but I don't think he would do this. And, and, you know, you're like, you know, what Micah wouldn't Micah have to be in on that? No, Micah wouldn't, because if the Cowboys sit there and go, we write checks all the time that heal feelings, and we know how to do that. Let's go ahead and go through this and earn as much publicity as we possibly can. This is Terry Jones. This is a theory, and at the end of the day, believe this. Come on, it would be the craziest thing I'd ever seen. Uh, but if one guy is gonna pull it off, it's Jerry, right? But if one guy is gonna sit there and go, What if Jerry says, all right, here's the number? I know this is the number, and I'm just waiting, and I'll give you the number like in two weeks. And then Micah goes, yeah, you know what, I don't want that number anymore. Like, I really do want to get trained like yesterday's price. I think both can be true. Like, I guarantee it, yes, that has crossed his mind, but the idea that he would actually frank do it, I just can't buy it. I love this. Eagles' Landon Dickerson serves beers at practice while recovering from knee surgery
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Landon Dickerson played bartender and served cold ones for the Super Bowl champion Eagles with the injured offensive lineman's career temporarily on ice. The Eagles can't wait for Dickerson to resume his day job. Dickerson passed around beers Thursday at the end of a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns — with a brace on his right knee following meniscus surgery that will keep the three-time Pro Bowl lineman sidelined at least through the end of training camp. Dickerson was injured at the end of Sunday's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. There is no set timetable for his return, and Brett Toth took first-team snaps at left guard this week at practice. Toth likely will start for the Eagles when they play their second preseason game Saturday against the Browns. 'Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to step to the plate and give it the best I got,' Toth said. 'Hopefully I can perform to the standard that was before me.' Beyond that, there are no guarantees. The Eagles remain hopeful Dickerson could return for the season opener when the Eagles raise their championship banner on Sept. 4 against Dallas. 'Don't have to name any starters or any backups at any position,' coach Nick Sirianni said. 'Brett's done a nice job and I like the depth that we have at that position and I know we have options there, but you asked about Brett, I think Brett's doing a really good job and he's got a lot of versatility.' Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson remained confident that Toth could handle the spot but was relieved that Dickerson wasn't necessarily expected to remain sidelined deep into the season. 'It was alarming but I'm glad we got a good-case scenario,' Johnson said. 'Make no mistake, Landon's one of the, if not, the best guard in football.' Toth, who played at Army, has had three stints with the Eagles and spent a bulk of that time on the practice squad. 'H's a really smart individual, really good with the detail of the game,' Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo said. 'He understands a lot of positions, which is great to have a guy like that that can line up in multiple spots and be able to step in if something happens.
