Hong Kong lyricist and actor Peter Lai recently opened up about his personal life, including his relationship with his son from a previous marriage that ended in 1992.
In an interview with HK01, Lai, 75, described his son as someone who 'mooches off the elderly'.
He revealed that he had spent over HK$100,000 (RM53,716) to fund the younger man's four-year Traditional Chinese Medicine studies in Nanjing – only for the latter to fail to graduate.
'He was just messing around. I'd bet 99% that's what happened, so he didn't graduate. It was a waste of time and money… But whatever, that's all in the past now,' he said.
Despite the disappointment, Lai continued to help his son pay off his credit card debts over the past two years. He cleared the full amount last month.
Lai then expressed frustration over his now 37-year-old son's lifestyle, saying the latter spends his days playing video games and rarely speaks to him.
'He doesn't even bother talking to me. We might as well be strangers,' he lamented.
Given the circumstances, it's no surprise that Lai would feel lonely at times.
He shared that he's now looking for a 'soulmate' and is openly putting himself out there, with marriage in mind.
'If Lee Lung Kei can do it, why can't I?' he said.
For context, Lee, 73, is a former TVB actor who made headlines in recent years for his relationship with his 37-year-old fiancee Chris Wong.
When asked if he's concerned about his son's future after he's gone, Lai bluntly said his son can fend for himself.
'If I'm gone, he can sleep under a bridge. He's not going to die. He can just apply for public housing or something.'
Lai is regarded as part of the pioneer generation of Cantopop lyricists in Hong Kong.
He has written songs for some of the city's biggest stars – including Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam and more.

New waterfront set to welcome Siniawan Country Music Festival from Sept 26-28

Miro (third right) and Lai (second left) in a group photo with committee members and representatives of bands for the coming country music festival. BAU (July 27): The newly completed Siniawan Waterfront will be the venue for this year's 8th Siniawan Country Music Festival from Sept 26 to 28, announced Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh. He said the Siniawan Waterfront will be officially declared open by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on the morning of Sept 27, followed by the launch of the 8th Siniawan Country Music Festival later that day by National Unity Minister Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang. In addition, he revealed two other events will also take place concurrently during the same three days, namely the 185th anniversary of Siniawan town and the 50th anniversary of the Siniawan street night market. 'It is going to be the 185th anniversary of Siniawan town, which was founded in 1840, and also the 50th anniversary of the Siniawan street night market. So, there will be four celebrations that we are going to celebrate in one location, which we are going to organise soon. 'There will be a lot of VIPs coming down. And of course, we, as the organisers, will be busy within these two months doing all the preparations,' he said at a press conference at the Siniawan bazaar last night. Miro, who is advisor to the Siniawan Country Music Festival, was hopeful there would be a larger crowd of more than 10,000 people for the event at its new and bigger venue. 'We will have 11 bands that will perform for the three consecutive nights on the main stage, and we will have a few solo performers on the old street,' he added. According to him, the Siniawan Country Music Festival is now the biggest country music event in Asia. He also said his dream is to one day invite a band from Nashville, widely recognised as the 'Country Music Capital of the World', to perform in Siniawan. 'But we hope that one day we're going to bring international artistes here to Siniawan, either from the United States, from Europe or from Australia,' he added. On the Siniawan Waterfront, he said the RM9 million project is finally completed despite some delays since construction started five years ago. He explained the due date for completion is on July 31, with the contractor now doing minor touch up work at the site. 'Finally, we got it (completed) this year,' he enthused. He also revealed further developments in Siniawan include a proposed RM28 million multi-level car park and a Siniawan Arena which can accommodate 5,000 spectators at one time. These initiatives, he said, are aimed to establish Siniawan as a tourism catalyst in the Bau district. Meanwhile, the Siniawan Country Music Festival crganising chairman Dylan Lai said the event has evolved since its inception in 2016. He also emphasised that the unique charm of Siniawan's old wooden shoplots — reminiscent of the Wild West — was instrumental in branding the town as a 'cowboy town.' 'In the first year of the Country Music Festival, we had almost 8,000 people coming to Siniawan. And for the second edition in 2017, we had almost 10,000. 'So that has been a very good impact for Siniawan. This is the one thing I want to thank YB Miro for, to put this event in our hometown and then attract more tourists and all the cowboys and cowgirls to join this event. 'Because the event will be held at the new venue waterfront area this year, we hope we can attract more than 10,000 people to join our festival,' said Lai. 8th Siniawan Country Music Festival lead Miro Simuh Siniawan waterfront

Hong Kong dancer Mo Li shares first image of his face since Mirror show accident

A Hong Kong dancer left paralysed after being struck by a giant screen at a concert by popular Cantopop boy band Mirror has partially revealed his face for the first time since the accident happened three years ago. Mo Li Kai-yin, 30, shared a few photos in an Instagram post on Wednesday night, including a half-body shot of him sitting in a white T-shirt, with a significant surgical scar near his collarbone from a tracheotomy. His facial features were playfully altered with a filter that magnified his eyes and mouth. 'It's me,' Li wrote in the post. 'I was so encouraged by something the daughter of a glasses shop owner said [on Tuesday]. I wanted to share a few recent small moments that have lifted my spirits and see if I can get some positive energy from all of you.' Li's post also featured items on his desk, pictures of a sunset and AI-generated cat images. The post was liked by about 38,000 Instagram users within 13 hours. Other artists, including Kay Tse On-kay and some members of the Hong Kong girl group Collar, also left comments. Li is currently receiving treatment overseas. The dancer suffered severe spinal injuries after a four-by-four-metre (13-by-13-foot) screen suspended over a stage fell and struck him and fellow performer Chang Tsz-fung during the band's concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum on July 28, 2022. The accident left Li at risk of being permanently paralysed from the neck down as a quadriplegic. His social media page was inactive for some time after the accident. His first post since the incident was made last December, in which he referred to his father, Reverend Derek Li Shing-lam, as possibly 'the only person who loves me this way'. In March, he shared an old video of himself teaching a dance class. 'I'm sure many of my students are much better than I was back then,' he commented. Li's girlfriend So Tsz-ching, a former Collar member, reposted the dancer's update to her Instagram story with the caption: 'If only I had half his strength.' - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

#SHOWBIZ: Actor Peter Lai, 75, searching for soul mate, estranged from son

HONG KONG: Veteran lyricist and actor Peter Lai, 75, recently opened up about his personal life in an interview with 8Days. The publication reported that Peter has a son from his previous marriage, which ended in 1992. He described his son as someone who "mooches off the elderly," revealing he had been helping him clear credit card debt amounting to hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong dollars for about two years. Peter only managed to settle all his son's debts last month. He complained that his son ignores him and treats him "like a stranger." Peter confessed he is now looking for a soulmate for companionship, openly stating his intention to marry. "Lee Lung Kei can do it, why can't I?" he remarked, referring to veteran actor Lee Lung Kei, 73, whose 36-year-old Chinese fiancée made headlines last year after being arrested for overstaying in Hong Kong. When asked if he was concerned about his son's future after he passed away, Peter calmly replied: "Let him fend for himself. When I'm gone, he can live under the bridge; he's not going to die, he can apply for public housing! He'll survive." Peter is renowned for co-writing the lyrics to many popular Cantopop songs in the 1970s and 80s alongside Sam Hui. These tracks include Leslie Cheung's 'Monica' and Sam's 'Susie of Tsim Sha Tsui'. In the 1990s, Peter went on to star in numerous TVB dramas until his contract with the broadcaster concluded in 2012.
