Ukrainian drone strikes kill 3 in Russia
One woman was killed and two other people were wounded in an attack on an enterprise in Penza, the region's governor, Oleg Melnichenko, wrote on Telegram.
An elderly man was killed inside a house that caught fire due to falling drone debris in the Samara region, governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev posted on Telegram.
In the Rostov region, a guard at an industrial facility was killed after a drone attack and a fire in one of the site's buildings, acting Rostov governor Yuri Sliusar said.
"The military repelled a massive air attack during the night," destroying drones over seven districts, Sliusar posted on Telegram.
Russia's defence ministry said its air defence systems had destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory -- 34 over the Rostov region -- in a nearly nine-hour period, from Friday night to Saturday morning.
In Ukraine's central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, overnight Russian drone attacks left three people wounded, governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram.
Several buildings, homes and cars were damaged, he said.
Russian forces have claimed advances in Dnipropetrovsk, recently announcing the capture of two villages there, part of Moscow's accelerated capture of territory in July, according to AFP's analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were "unchanged".
Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders.
"The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia's readiness," he wrote on X.

The United States will impose a tariff of about 100% on semiconductor chips imported from countries not producing in America or planning to do so, President Donald Trump said. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday the new tariff rate would apply to "all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States," but would not apply to companies that had made a commitment to manufacture in the United States or were in the process of doing so. "If, for some reason, you say you're building and you don't build, then we go back and we add it up, it accumulates, and we charge you at a later date, you have to pay, and that's a guarantee," Trump added. "There's so much serious investment in the United States in chip production that much of the sector will be exempt," said Martin Chorzempa, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Since chips made in China won't be exempt, chips made by SMIC or Huawei would not be either, Chorzempa said, noting that chips from these companies entering the U.S. market were mostly incorporated into devices assembled in China. "If these tariffs were applied without a component tariff, it might not make much difference," he said. Chipmaking nations South Korea and Japan, as well as the European Union, have reached trade deals with the U.S., potentially giving them an advantage. The EU said it agreed to a single 15% tariff rate for the vast majority of EU exports, including cars, chips and pharmaceuticals. South Korea and Japan said separately that US agreed not to give them worse tariff rates than other countries on chips, suggesting a 15% levy as well.

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in the United States, a move that could help it sidestep potential tariffs on iPhones. The new pledge raises Apple's total domestic investment commitment in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. Earlier this year, the company announced it would invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers across the country in that period. Despite political pressure, analysts widely agree that building iPhones in the U.S. remains unrealistic due to labor costs and the complexity of the global supply chain. "The announcement is a savvy solution to the president's demand that Apple manufacture all iPhones in the U.S.," said Nancy Tengler, CEO and CIO of Laffer Tengler Investments, which holds Apple shares. Apple to announce new $100bn investment in US manufacturing
Apple was set to announce plans on Wednesday to invest another $100 billion in US manufacturing, as the iPhone maker seeks to avoid President Donald Trump's tariffs. The new commitment would bring its total pledge to invest in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. The company pledged in February to invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers. The investment was also expected to include moving towards assembling more critical components in the US, Reuters reported, quoting a White House official. The announcement comes after Mr Trump threatened to hit the Big Tech giant with a 25 per cent tariff for making its flagship devices outside the US. Apple shares were 5.91 per cent higher at $214.92 during afternoon trading. In the company's earnings call last week, Apple chief Tim Cook told investors that it had taken a hit of about $800 million from tariff-related costs last quarter and about $1.1 billion this quarter. Mr Cook told analysts during the call that the 'vast majority' of iPhones sold in the US come from India. Most other Apple products such as MacBooks and iPads that are sold in the US are made in Vietnam, he said. 'We obviously try to optimise our supply chain,' Mr Cook said at the time. 'And ultimately, we will do more in the United States.'
