Will Scrap SC Certificates Of All Other Than Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs: Devendra Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said if a person belonging a religion other than Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism has obtained a Scheduled Caste certificate fraudulently, it will be cancelled.
Action will be taken against such a person if he or she has secured reservation benefits such as government jobs. If such a person has won an election using a fraudulently obtained SC certificate, their election will be declared null and void, Mr Fadnavis said in the legislative council.
Replying to a 'calling attention' motion, he also said the state government intends to bring in strong provisions to deal with cases of religious conversion through coercion and cheating.
Amit Gorkhe (BJP) had claimed that freedom of religion was being misused by "crypto Christians", and some people benefit from reservations under the SC category while professing other religions. `Crypto Christians' was an apparent reference to people who discreetly follow Christianity while belonging to a different religion on paper.
On the face of it, they belong to an SC community and get reservation benefits like government jobs, he had said.
Mr Fadnavis said on November 26, 2024, the Supreme Court gave a verdict in which it made it clear that the Scheduled Castes category reservation can be availed only by Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs, and not by those belonging to other religions.
"If anyone from religions other than Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism has availed an SC certificate or reservation, their validity certificates and caste certificates will be cancelled with due procedure. If anyone has availed benefits like government jobs, action will be taken against them," he said.
"Recovery (of monetary benefits) will be recommended from those who have availed benefits using fraudulently obtained caste certificates," he said.
BJP leader Chitra Wagh said there have been cases where women were duped into marriage by hiding the husband's religion.
She cited a case in Sangli where a woman married into a family which secretly professed Christianity. The woman suffered torture and was forced to change her religion, leading to her death while she was seven months pregnant, Wagh said.
A person can follow any religion and convert another person with consent, but law does not permit the use of force, cheating or enticement for conversion, the chief minister said.
"Complaints of coercion or inducement for conversion will lead to investigation and action against the concerned organisation," Mr Fadnavis added.
The state government had formed a panel headed by the Director General of Police (DGP) for giving recommendations to deal with such cases, and it has submitted its report, he said.
The government will study it and bring in new (legal) provisions so that conversions do not happen by force or cheating, he said.
"Action can be taken under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in such cases. But a panel was formed to suggest strict provisions. The state government has the intentions of bringing in strong provisions to deal with such cases, and we will take a decision on this soon," he said.
On Monday, Pankaj Bhoyar, Minister of State for Home, had said the state will bring an anti-conversion law in the winter session of the legislature, and it will be more stringent than similar legislations in other states.
Pravin Darekar (BJP) claimed a secret campaign to lure people into converting was being carried out in poor localities and slums.
CM Fadnavis acknowledged that such things take place in slums. He, however, said the government has no intention to ban religious conversions that take place consensually.

Scholars condemn destruction of over 300 Buddhist stupas, sacred statues in Tibet
Scholars and experts on Tibetan affairs have strongly condemned the recent destruction of over 300 Buddhist stupas and sacred statues in Tibet, describing it as a direct assault on Indian cultural heritage. They have called for urgent intervention by the Indian government to address what they term as a systematic erasure of Tibetan—and by extension, Indian—cultural legacy under Chinese rule. Speaking to The Indian Express, Prof (Dr) Sashi Bala, noted Indologist and Buddhist scholar, said, 'The latest report on the destruction of over 300 Buddhist stupas reveals the ongoing situation in Tibet. After physically occupying Tibet, China is now engaged in a cultural invasion. It is not just an attack on Tibetan culture but also on Indian cultural heritage in Tibet that is being systematically erased.' She said that roots of Tibetan Buddhism lie deeply embedded in Indian traditions, and that the destruction of such symbols is tantamount to denying the Indian origin of Buddhism. 'China propagates the false narrative that Buddhism did not originate from India, using the argument that the Buddha was born in Lumbini, which is now in Nepal. But this overlooks the fact that the philosophical, scriptural, and monastic traditions of Buddhism evolved in India,' she said. 'Tibet and China were historically distinct. There was nothing Chinese in Tibet. Everything Tibet holds sacred—its culture, language, and religion—has Indian origins. Yet India has not responded as it should to these continuing cultural atrocities,' Bala said, adding that during her visits to Tibet, even international scholars were denied access to many revered religious and cultural sites. Echoing similar concerns, senior professor Vijay Kumar Singh from the Department of Chinese and Tibetan Languages at Panjab University, Chandigarh, said, 'What is happening in Tibet today is not surprising. China follows an expansionist mindset, common to all authoritarian regimes. It will never admit to destroying Tibetan culture, just as the British never admitted to the atrocities they committed in India.' He warned that China's rapid growth and dominance could eventually allow it to rewrite Tibetan history entirely from a Sinicized perspective. 'There may come a time when history books will reflect only the Chinese version of Tibet's past,' he said, urging the Indian government to condemn these actions at all appropriate diplomatic and international forums. According to a report released on Tuesday by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the demolition took place in May or June 2025 at Lungrab Zang-ri, near the Janggang Monastery. Chinese authorities reportedly razed hundreds of medium-sized Tibetan Buddhist stupas along with three larger ones. In what the CTA describes as a 'brazen act of cultural vandalism,' a newly constructed statue of Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok—the late founder and abbot of the renowned Serthar Buddhist Institute—was also destroyed, along with a sacred statue of Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche ('Precious Master' in Tibetan), a revered figure in Vajrayana Buddhism. 'These acts have left the local Tibetan community deeply traumatised,' the report notes, adding that Chinese authorities have since sealed off the area and imposed strict surveillance, detaining anyone who attempts to share information about the incident. Locals reportedly face immediate arrest on charges of 'leaking state secrets.' The CTA report also states that Chinese officials have justified the destruction on the grounds that the stupas were built on 'government land' and allegedly violated undisclosed regulations. All debris from the demolition has reportedly been cleared, effectively erasing physical traces of the centuries-old symbols of faith.

BJP begins ‘countdown' for LSG polls in Kerala
KOTTAYAM: The state BJP has started elaborate preparations to face the local self-government polls to be held this year end and the assembly polls to be held next year. As part of it, party state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar activated a countdown clock at the party's Kottayam west district committee office on Wednesday. The 'Mission 2025 Count Down' was kickstarted with a 100-day timeline leading up to the elections to boost the enthusiasm of workers for the election preparations. Similar countdown clocks will be installed at all district offices of the party across the state. This was decided at a state-level leadership workshop held at the party's district committee office in Kottayam on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, state general secretaries, prabharis, zonal presidents, and presidents and general secretaries of various organisational districts. The workshop focussed on strategies to be adopted in the upcoming elections. The workshop decided to set the strategies on 'Vikasita Keralam' programme in line with 'Viksit Bharat 2027' mission of PM Modi. The party intends to make significant advances in the local body polls as a precursor to the assembly elections. The state leadership called on the district-level office-bearers to start preparatory activities for LSG elections that include adding voters to the electoral roll, taking up localised issues such as drinking water crisis, and envisioning development of the region. 'The campaign will highlight the necessity of the BJP coming to power to catalyse development,' said Lijinlal, BJP Kottayam west district president. The BJP state chief also inaugurated a help desk at the party Kottayam district committee office. 'The help desk will ensure that various development projects and initiatives of the Centre will reach every citizen. It will function as a link between the development vision of Narendra Modi and the public,' Rajeev Chandrasekhar said. The party leaders said the objective is to decentralise the Viksit Bharat and Vikasita Keralam Mission to the grassroots level. 'Under the mission, the party aims to ensure the development of each panchayat and municipality. We will formulate an action plan at the district and panchayat levels as part of the initiative,' said Lijinlal.
