Malaysian haj pilgrims advised to stay indoors as Arafah, Mina face 50°C heat
MAKKAH: Malaysian pilgrims are advised to remain inside their tents and avoid direct exposure to sunlight, especially between 10am and 4pm, due to the extreme heat, which is expected to reach up to 50 degrees Celsius.
Tabung Haji's Malaysian haj delegation head Mohd Hisham Harun said this in line with the directives issued by the Saudi Arabian Haj and Umrah Ministry which recommended the implementation of a lockdown (restriction) of pilgrims' movements in the Arafah and Mina areas during peak heat hours as a preventive measure against the risk of heat stroke.
"We received the instructions through the WhatsApp group of heads of haj delegations nationwide and also during my meeting with the Deputy Minister of International Relations, Ministry of Haj and Umrah, Saudi Arabia, Dr Hassan Yahya Al-Manakhrah.
"He emphasised that full cooperation be given to the Ministry of Haj and Umrah, Saudi Arabia, and the local operator, Masyarik, to ensure pilgrims remain in their tents and do not go out during the scorching hot weather," he said when met by the media after the haj officers' gathering with the Malaysian haj delegation head at the Tabung Haji headquarters here yesterday.
He said the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah also recommended that pilgrims remain in their respective tents during the wukuf day and not go out to open areas, including the Namirah Mosque, to listen to the Arafah sermon.
"As an alternative measure, the Saudi Arabian authorities have requested that large screens be provided at the tent area for pilgrims to watch the live broadcast of the Arafah sermon," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Hisham also called on all haj officials to be physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to face the peak of the haj operations, especially during the movement of pilgrims to Arafah, Muzdalifah and Mina soon.
"Tabung Haji's main focus is to ensure that all Malaysian pilgrims can perform their wukuf at Arafah. For pilgrims who are undergoing treatment, we will implement the 'safari wukuf' method, which is to take them on a bus to Arafah and the bus will stop there for at least one to two hours before returning to the treatment centre," he said.
He also reminded the officers to take care of their health and work together as a team to ensure the welfare and smoothness of the haj pilgrimage by Malaysian pilgrims.
"We pray that all the planning and implementation for the haj will go smoothly and that officers will play an important role in ensuring that pilgrims can perform their worship perfectly, Insya Allah," he said.

Na'im said Lembaga Tabung Haji consistently reminds prospective pilgrims not to be lured by packages offering unrealistic prices or marketed by unauthorised haj operators. "While mujamalah or furada visas are considered valid, they are exclusive privileges of the Saudi government and fall outside the official haj quota," he said. He added that under the Tabung Haji Act 1995 (Act 535), it is an offence for any travel agency or individual not licensed as a haj operator by Tabung Haji to advertise haj packages. As such, he urged the public to report any unauthorised haj promotions found on social media or websites to Tabung Haji, to help curb the activities of unlicensed operators.

Haj pilgrims start early for wukuf ritual to beat midday heat
MAKKAH: After gathering in the Plains of Arafah since yesterday, haj pilgrims today began performing the wukuf ritual in pursuit of Allah's forgiveness and with hopes that their prayers will be granted. The ritual, one of the five pillars of haj, is carried out from after the sun passes its zenith, from the start of Zohor prayer time on 9 Zulhijjah, until before dawn on 10 Zulhijjah. According to observations, pilgrims took advantage of the cooler morning hours to head to Arafah, as the weather was forecast to become hotter after midday. The weather forecast indicated that temperatures in the Arafah area would rise from noon until late afternoon, peaking between 2pm and 4pm at around 41-degree Celcius. In Islam, the significance of wukuf lies in its remembrance of when Prophet Adam and Hawa were sent down from paradise to Earth for disobeying Allah's command and being deceived by the devil. More importantly, the Plains of Arafah is a place for self-reflection, to regret past sins and sincerely seek forgiveness from Allah. This refers to the site where Prophet Adam and Hawa spent years repenting until their prayers were accepted. Previously, the Saudi Arabian government announced that pilgrims would not be allowed to leave their tents, especially during the culminating rites in Arafah between 10am and 4pm, due to expected temperatures reaching between 40-degree Celcius and 45-degree Celcius. Pilgrims were also prohibited from visiting Namirah Mosque and Jabal al-Rahmah (Mount Arafat), popular locations for pilgrims, including those from Malaysia, during the same time frame to minimise the risk of heatstroke. As of now, Saudi authorities have recorded 41 cases of heat exhaustion among pilgrims. Last year, the Saudi Health Ministry reported that medical teams treated 2,764 pilgrims suffering from heat exhaustion, in addition to other heat-related conditions. Saudi Haj and Umrah Minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah reportedly said that to mitigate such risks, thousands of cooling fans have been provided, along with 400 water-based cooling units. Authorities have also constructed 2.5km of newly completed shaded pathways leading towards Arafah.
