PAPAR: A 42-year-old man died after being electrocuted while picking mangoes in Kampung Bambangan, here, Sunday. According to Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson, a team of eight personnel led by Fire Station Chief Rozlan Osman rushed to the scene after being notified at 3.01pm.
Advertisement Upon arriving the scene, he said the team carried the victim down from the tree in which he was carrying out his mango picking activity. Based on information from the public, he also said that the deceased was using a metal pole to pick mangoes from the tree but accidentally which accidentally touched a nearby electric cable which led to the electrocution. 'The team brought the victim down with ladder and rope after the electricity was turned off by Sabah Electricity. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Department officers, and the body was handed over to the police for further action,' he added. Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was tentatively charged in the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday with trafficking drugs. However, no plea was recorded from Alsafi Amir Hassan, who appeared before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus, after the charge was read out to him. Advertisement Alsafi was accused of trafficking 51.85gm of 3,4 Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on May 28, this year, at 12.10pm, in a room of an entertainment outlet, Lorong Pavilion Bundusan, Penampang. The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane. The court fixed July 23 for mention pending the chemist's report. Alsafi was ordered to be remanded further pending the date as the charge against him has no provision for bail. Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man claimed trial to assisting in hiding a stolen vehicle. Mohd Hafieszul Mohd Adnin pleaded not guilty to helping in hiding a stolen Toyota Hilux belonging to Nawie Oilfield Services Sdn Bhd on June 3, this year, at 10.45pm, at Kg Lembaga Padi area, Jalan Lintas here. The charge is framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and seven years and liable to a fine, on conviction. Hafieszul was offered bail of RM2,500 in two sureties pending pre-trial case management on July 23. In another case, four men were penalised for having syabu. Khairul Anwar Abd Rahman, Rizal Usman, Abd Umbing and Abd Sham pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing between 3.1gm and 0.15gm, at separate locations here between Jan 28 and Feb 4, this year. Khairul, Rizal, Abd Umbing and Abd Sham were jailed 12 months, 10 months, eight months and seven months, respectively. They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years' jail, or both, on conviction. Khairul and Rizal also pleaded guilty to taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years' jail, on conviction. TAWAU: Police arrested two men in separate drug-related operations on Monday, including one suspected of boiling and selling ketum juice to local addicts from his home. In the first case, a man in his 30s was detained during a raid on a house at PPR Taman Sri Semarak around 10.30am while he was resting in his living room. Advertisement The suspect allegedly admitted to boiling 21 bottles of ketum juice for sale at RM20 per bottle to local drug users. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police discovered 21 transparent 1.5 litre plastic bottles containing suspected ketum juice hidden in two separate refrigerators in the kitchen during a search of the premises. 'Initial investigations found the liquid contents are believed to be ketum juice with an estimated total weight of 31.2 litres valued at RM350,' Jasmin said in a statement Tuesday. The suspect has been remanded for further investigation under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, which provides for fines or imprisonment, upon conviction. Initial urine screening tests on the suspect returned negative for drugs and checks revealed the local man had no prior criminal record. In a separate incident, police arrested another local man, aged 20, along Jalan Takada after finding 0.90 grams of methamphetamine worth RM100 in his trouser pocket at about 3.15pm. The suspect voluntarily surrendered the drugs to police during the operation conducted by police. Despite the drug possession, his initial urine screening test was negative and he also had no previous criminal record. TAWAU: A local man was sentenced to 12 years in jail by the High Court here on Wednesday for having 128.76 grammes of syabu hidden in Milo packets last year. Abdul Gaffar Passaba, 53, pleaded guilty before Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol after an alternative charge was read out to him by the court interpreter. Advertisement The court ordered the prison sentence to take effect from Gaffar's date of arrest on Jan 30, 2024. However, Gaffar was spared the cane due to his age. Gaffar committed the offence on Jan 30, 2024, at 11.30am, at the sea near Tawau Port. He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which provides for life imprisonment or a minimum of five years' jail and not less than 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The facts of the case stated that Gaffar was apprehended during Ops Tapis Khas by the Tawau Marine Police who had stopped a boat for inspection. He was one of the passengers and was reportedly acting suspiciously before attempting to flee, but was quickly detained by the police team. A further search revealed two plastic packets of Milo containing the drugs, which were found in his possession.
