PAPAR: A 42-year-old man died after being electrocuted while picking mangoes in Kampung Bambangan, here, Sunday. According to Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson, a team of eight personnel led by Fire Station Chief Rozlan Osman rushed to the scene after being notified at 3.01pm.
Advertisement Upon arriving the scene, he said the team carried the victim down from the tree in which he was carrying out his mango picking activity. Based on information from the public, he also said that the deceased was using a metal pole to pick mangoes from the tree but accidentally which accidentally touched a nearby electric cable which led to the electrocution. 'The team brought the victim down with ladder and rope after the electricity was turned off by Sabah Electricity. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Department officers, and the body was handed over to the police for further action,' he added. (Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA: A man has refused to pay the RM1,500 bail imposed by the Batu Pahat magistrates' court on his 16-year-old son who pleaded guilty to raping a female acquaintance earlier this month. The 40-year-old man said this was to teach his son a lesson, after the boy's plea before magistrate Arun Noval Dass. Advertisement Berita Harian reported that the man, who accompanied his son to court for the charge under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, left his son there without paying the bail. The boy was accused of raping his 15-year-old acquaintance at a house in Batu Pahat between 4pm and 5.30pm on June 2. The section provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping, upon conviction. According to the police report lodged by the boy's father, the boy committed the offence while his mother was at work. Advertisement On the day of the incident, his 41-year-old mother came home early to find the girl's slippers outside the house. She knocked on his door several times before it was opened, and found the girl in his bedroom. A police investigation found both the accused and the victim admitting to having had sex 16 to 18 times. The UPSI bus crash that killed 15: Here's what we know so far
GERIK, June 9 — At least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured after a crash involving a Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) bus and a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding here early this morning, around 1am. The collision The bus was transporting students from Jerteh, Terengganu, to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. It overturned near Tasik Banding around 1am after colliding with a Perodua Alza, which skidded into a ditch. Some victims were thrown from the vehicles, while others managed to escape. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The victims The Civil Defence Force confirmed that 13 people died at the scene, and two more died later in hospital. A total of 48 people were involved. Two are reported to be in critical condition. Twenty others are semi-critical, and six are in stable condition. All the bus passengers were believed to be students from Besut and Setiu, Terengganu. The rescue effort Emergency services received a distress call at 1.10am and arrived at the scene by 2.11am. Seventeen personnel from the Gerik and Jeli Fire and Rescue Stations responded. They were supported by police and Civil Defence Force officers. Firefighters had to cut open the back of the bus to free trapped passengers. Injured victims were taken to Gerik Hospital: seven are in the red zone, 20 in the yellow zone and six in the green zone. National response Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail were deeply saddened by the tragedy. 'This heartbreaking disaster, which happens all too often, should serve as a lesson for everyone to always be careful and never rush toward a destination,' Anwar said. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir confirmed UPSI students were among the victims and said the ministry would coordinate necessary support for the families. UPSI statement UPSI confirmed that 42 of its students were on board the bus, adding that originally, 44 students were supposed to board the bus, but two of them did not. The university has activated an operations room and requests that any information be channelled to its office tel: 05-450 7148, or hotline tel: 019-571 9977. Narrow escape One UPSI student known only as Alia, who was listed as a bus passenger, said she had changed her plans and returned to campus early. 'I was supposed to be on that bus last night, but I went back to UPSI earlier instead,' she told Malay daily Berita Harian. She woke at 3am to the news and was shocked that many assumed she had died in the crash. What's next Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Authorities have yet to release full details of the victims' identities. More updates are expected from UPSI and the Higher Education Ministry in the coming days.

IPOH - At least 15 people were killed in an accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. In a separate statement, Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon said the bus and the Perodua Alza were travelling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan, to Gerik, at the time of the incident. She confirmed that 48 individuals were involved in the crash, which caused the bus to overturn and the MPV to skid into a ditch. "Some victims managed to exit the vehicle on their own, some were thrown out, while others remained trapped inside the bus. "The operations commander cut open the rear section of the bus using hydraulic tools to create a working space," she said, adding that once access was gained, six victims were found still inside the bus. Sayani said fire department personnel stabilised the injured victims and extracted them from the bus before handing them over to the Ministry of Health (MOH) for further treatment. "Injured victims, including those who managed to exit the vehicle on their own, received initial treatment from MOH personnel at the scene before being sent to the hospital," she said. Meanwhile, UPSI deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin said most of the bus passengers were UPSI students returning to campus in Tanjong Malim from Terengganu after the Aidiladha holidays. "They had gathered in Jerteh and chartered a private bus to return to campus after celebrating the festive break in their respective hometowns," he said. - BERNAMA
