Netflix Nearing $5 Million Deal for ‘Perfect Neighbor,' Sundance Documentary About Florida's Stand Your Ground Law (EXCLUSIVE)

Yahoo06-02-2025

'The Perfect Neighbor,' a documentary that examines Florida's Stand Your Ground laws and gun regulations, is in final negotiations to sell to Netflix after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. The price tag is roughly $5 million, although the deal hasn't been signed.
Netflix declined to comment.

The film, which debuted to critical praise, uses police body-cam footage to tell the story of how a neighborhood dispute slowly escalated into a shocking act of violence. It follows a tragedy that captivated national attention, one in which a woman named Ajike 'AJ' Shantrell Owens was shot and killed by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, after Lorincz kept complaining about children playing near her apartment.
So far, it's been a glacial market with only a handful of films landing distribution out of Sundance. Netflix has been the most prolific buyer, also nabbing rights to 'Train Dreams,' an acclaimed drama starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. Elsewhere, A24 scored a festival favorite in 'Sorry, Baby,' Sideshow and Janus Films landed the Ira Sach two-hander 'Peter Hujar's Day,' while Neon emerged victorious in a bidding war for 'Together,' a body-horror thriller starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie. 'The Perfect Neighbor' was seen as one of the most accomplished and powerful documentaries to play at the festival and is believed to have awards potential.
Geeta Gandbhir directed the film and had a personal connection to the story. Owens was her sister-in-law's best friend. Soledad O'Brien serves as an executive producer. In an interview with Variety, Gandbhir said that she decided to put the focus of the film on the police footage instead of having it contain interviews with people impacted by the incident because it gave the story more immediacy.
'You see Susan's interactions with the police over two years,' she said. 'You see this trail and the developments as they occur, and the issue gets worse. You see the inability and the helplessness of law enforcement to really manage it or to even see her as a threat. But you also see this beautiful, diverse and close-knit community who are taking care of each other's kids. Susan is this outlier, in a way that she is this looming threat that keeps encroaching and getting closer and closer, and there is no way to mitigate it.'
Cinetic Media handled the sale of the film.

I Just Realized Why 'Sirens' Star Milly Alcock Looks So Familiar—and I Can't Believe I Didn't See it Sooner

In case you missed it, there's a show on Netflix that's been holding onto the #1 spot for weeks. That show is called Sirens, and honestly? I enjoyed it. Sure, not everyone agrees, but it's got drama, mystery, suspense and just the right amount of comedic relief. But this isn't a review—let's talk about the cast. Sirens stars Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy and Milly Alcock. If you're anything like me, those first two names rang a bell instantly. I mean, Julianne Moore is a legend (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Still Alice, need I say more?). And Meghann Fahy has been in some faves of mine—The White Lotus, The Bold Type and The Perfect Couple. MACALL POLAY/NETFLIX But when it came to Milly Alcock, I had a moment of, 'Wait, I know that face.' And if you've seen House of the Dragon, you do too. Alcock played young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO hit—yes, that Rhaenyra. She appeared in seven episodes and even earned two Critics' Choice Award nominations for her performance. Ollie Upton / HBO At just 25, Alcock already has major HBO and Netflix hits under her belt—and she's not slowing down. She's set to star in the highly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for release in 2026, which officially brings her into the DC Comics universe. And you might not have to wait until then to see her in full superhero mode. According to IMDb, Milly is credited in the upcoming Superman movie, hitting theaters this July. Before all that, the Australian actress was in a handful of series and projects like Reckoning, Upright and The Familiars—with her first acting credit dating back to 2014. So yeah, Milly Alcock has been on our screens for a while now—and something tells me this is just the beginning. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Click here. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Allison Hannigan Say ‘Buffy' Reboot Will Honor Michelle Trachtenberg: ‘We'll Do What's Appropriate'

During an interview with Parade, actresses Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan addressed the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot — which was confirmed to be in the works for Hulu earlier this year — but the stars remained mum on details. 'I know never to say never, but I'm excited to hear what Sarah says it's like,' Hannigan said. More from IndieWire Lucie Arnaz Says 'You Can't Talk to Aaron Sorkin,' Reflecting on 'Being the Ricardos' - 'It Was So Wrong' With 'Good Night, and Good Luck' on CNN, George Clooney Trusts the Power of Live TV, One More Time 'That seems fair,' Gellar laughed. Gellar did confirm that the series would pay tribute to the late actress Michelle Trachtenberg, who played her younger sister Dawn Summers seasons 5 through 7. 'We'll be able to do something,' Gellar said. 'We'll do what's appropriate.' 'I'm sure it will be handled with utter grace,' Hannigan added. Gellar, who has reteamed with Hannigan for an awareness campaign surrounding meningitis vaccination, Ask2BSure, said that she and her former co-star share an easy rapport on set. 'We still finish each other's sentences. You know when I'm lost, and I know when you are,' she said. 'I think our … work habits are very similar, so when you approach things the same way, it just evolves.' 'Even shooting, I feel like we just had this … unspoken dialogue,' Hannigan said. Last month, Deadline reported that Ryan Kiera Armstrong would star alongside former cast members in the reboot's pilot — which so far is all that has been ordered. But Gellar was publicly resistant to the idea of a 'Buffy' reboot for many years, saying in 2022, 'I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn't need to be done … We wrapped that up.' But Gellar flipped on the idea after hearing Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao's plan for the series' continuation. 'The passion that [she] came to me with, what she wanted to do with the show and the character, and why 'Buffy' is needed now — it was the first time where I thought, 'OK, there's a reason,'' Gellar told Elite Daily. In the same interview, she said the revival had been in the work for four years. 'We won't do it unless it's 100 percent right and there's 100 percent a reason,' she added. One place fans will not see Gellar is in the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel, out July 18. The reboot's director said that Gellar resisted the idea of a return. 'I tried, OK? I harassed her! But she is dead,' Robinson told Entertainment Weekly. 'I tried to pitch some crazy shit too. I was like, 'What if it's like you weren't dead and you're actually alive, but in hiding?' And Sarah's like, 'I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.' I was like, 'Yeah, but what if?' And she said, 'I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar.''
